King Charles State Visit to France Cancelled Due To Widespread Riots, Protests, And Strikes

 

CNBC: King Charles’ visit to France postponed after wave of protests 

* The new British monarch’s first state visit was scheduled to run from March 26 to March 29 and see him visit Paris and Bordeaux. 

* In Paris, tear gas and water cannons have been fired at protesters and police have been injured. 

* The French government last week announced it would use special constitutional powers to force its unpopular pension bill through the lower house of parliament without a vote. 

King Charles III’s visit to France has been postponed, as protests continue over the Paris government’s pension system reforms. 

This trip was due to be the new British monarch’s first state visit and was scheduled to run from March 26 to March 29. 

Unions on Thursday called for a national day of action involving strikes and protests on March 28. The decision to cancel the visit was taken by the French and British governments after a phone call between French President Emmanuel Macron and King Charles, according to a statement.

Emmanuel Macron today swiped back at Liz Truss after the Tory leadership favourite refused to say whether the French President was a 'friend' of Britain. 

The Foreign Secretary set up a fresh diplomatic spat across the Channel when - speaking to Tory members in Norwich last night - she claimed 'the jury's out' on Mr Macron. 

Ms Truss, who is widely expected to succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister next month, also vowed to judge the French leader on 'deeds not words' if she enters Downing Street.

British PM Johnson Tells France "To Get A Grip" After Submarine Dispute

 

Reuters: Get a grip, British PM Johnson tells France after submarine row 

LONDON/PARIS (Reuters) -British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told France on Wednesday to get a grip and give allies in the United States and Australia a break over a row about a trilateral nuclear submarine deal that tore up a separate French contract. 

The new defence partnership between Britain, the United States and Australia was announced last week and will give Canberra access to nuclear powered submarine technology. 

France accused U.S. President Joe Biden of stabbing it in the back and acting like his predecessor Donald Trump after Australia ditched a defence contract with Paris for the purchase of conventional submarines.

BBC: Channel crossings: France and UK clash over Border Force tactic plans 

France has hit out at the UK over plans to turn back some boats carrying migrants across the Channel to England. 

The government wants the Border Force to turn away boats - but only in limited circumstances under a pre-authorised policy signed off by Home Secretary Priti Patel. 

France said this would break international maritime law, and also accused the UK of financial blackmail. Boris Johnson's spokesman has said any new plans will be safe and legal.

NBC: U.K., France deploy Navy vessels to Jersey in post-Brexit fishing feud 

The French government has suggested it could cut power supplies to the island if its fishermen are not granted full access to U.K. fishing waters. 

LONDON — The U.K. and France were engaged in a naval standoff on Thursday as a long-simmering dispute over post-Brexit fishing rights escalated in the English Channel. 

France deployed two maritime patrol boats to the waters off the British Channel island of Jersey, its navy said, after the British Navy dispatched two of its own vessels to the area late Wednesday. 

The dueling moves came as a flotilla of French fishing trawlers sailed to the Jersey port of St. Helier to protest over fishing rights.
