British Inquiry Says Former PM David Cameron 'Ultimately Responsible' For Libya Chaos After 2011 Intervention

Reuters: Britain's Libya intervention flawed, Cameron to blame - MPs

Britain's 2011 military intervention in Libya, ordered by former prime minister David Cameron, relied on flawed intelligence and hastened the North African country's political and economic collapse, MPs said on Wednesday in a damning report.

Britain and France led international efforts to help oust Libya's then-leader Muammar Gaddafi in early 2011, using fighter jets to beat back Gaddafi's armies and allow rebels to topple the longtime dictator.

But Libya has since suffered years of chaos. Islamic State has gained a foothold, former rebels still fight over territory and people smugglers have set up a huge operation, sending tens of thousands on the perilous sea journey to Europe.

The Telegraph: British special forces destroyed Islamic State trucks in Libya, say local troops

Evidence has emerged that British special forces have engaged in frontline combat against violent jihadists in Libya for the first time, destroying an Islamic State vehicle packed with explosives.

It follows reports earlier this year that elite commandos – including the SAS - were in Libya advising local forces in the fight against Isil.

Mohammed Durat, a commander of troops in Misrata, told The Times: “My unit works just with English. I have met with them personally and they have destroyed two suicide vehicles that were targeting my fighters.”

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond: 'Britain Not Ruling Out Sending Troops to Libya'

Newsweek: Britain Not Ruling Out Sending Troops to Libya

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said on Sunday that he could not rule out sending troops to Libya if requested to do so by the Libyan government, but that any deployment would need to be approved by Parliament.

Western powers are backing a new Libyan unity government, hoping it will seek foreign support to confront Islamic State militants, deal with migrant flows from Libya to Europe and restore oil production to shore up Libya's economy.

"It wouldn't make sense to rule anything out because you never know how things are going to evolve," Hammond told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.
