This weekend marked two years since the creation of the Air Force’s Global Strike Command, the service’s modern-day attempt to rekindle what it had — organizationally and culturally — in the old Strategic Air Command. Its commander, Lt. Gen. Jim Kowalski, wrote Monday that the airmen of Global Strike have a lot to be proud of after their first two years, but things haven’t reached the point that Jimmy Stewart will come back from the dead and make a movie about them.

My Comment: The Air Force’s Global Strike Command does not play the role that it once did .... in fact .... if this is what is making the news for your command .... the public (and political) attention on what you are doing will not be focused on what is your central role (i.e. the custodian of much of your nation's nuclear deterrent).

So .... We’re Improving, But Can’t ‘Declare Victory’ .... yeah .... right .... whatever.

New U.S. Global Strike Command To Juggle Nuclear, Conventional Missions

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Air Force leaders say nuclear weapons will be the central focus of a new Global Strike Command, but the service faces growing questions about how the strike headquarters will juggle its additional responsibilities in training and providing forces for conventional combat operations (see GSN, April 7).

Currently, two different Air Force commands are responsible for ICBM operations and bomber aircraft missions. The new Global Strike Command, expected to open its doors by October, is to oversee both types of nuclear delivery systems.
