Indonesia Handling Of Bali Executions Questioned

From Yahoo News/Reuters:

JAKARTA (Reuters) – Indonesia's handling of the executions of three militants for the 2002 Bali bombings caused unnecessary suffering for victims of the blasts and helped fan domestic passions, Indonesian media said on Monday.

The three men from the militant Islamist group Jemaah Islamiah -- Imam Samudra, Mukhlas, and Amrozi -- were executed by firing squad on Sunday for the 2002 nightclub attacks that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians and 38 Indonesians.

In the West Java village of Serang, heavily armed police officers struggled to restrain a raucous crowd as it carried the coffin of Imam Samudra, the third man executed for the bombings.

Reprisals Fear As Bali Bombers Executed -- The Guardian

Jihadists are tied to poles and shot dead by firing squad, despite pleas from victims' families that their sentence could result in further atrocities

Three Islamic terrorists convicted for their part in the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings that claimed the lives of 202 people - most of them foreign tourists - were shot dead last night by firing squad.

The executions, which had been widely expected, came despite last-minute pleas to the Indonesian authorities from relatives of some of the British dead for the sentences to be stayed, warning that they would be used as a propaganda coup by the militants' supporters and families.

Jasman Panjaitan, a spokesman for the Attorney General's office, told a news conference last night that Imam Samudra, Amrozi Nurhasyim and Ali Ghufron had been executed on the prison island of Nusakambangan off southern Java.

Bali Will Be Attacked Again Warn Bombers -- Times Online

The three Islamic militants awaiting execution for the Bali bombings have warned that militants will target tourists in more attacks on the island.

Just days before they face death by a firing squad Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra have made the threat from their cell in an interview with CNN, to be broadcast next month.

Speaking to CNN correspondent Dan Rivers, Amrozi tells him he had "no regrets whatsoever," and adds: "My message for Australians; don't you come to places like that ever again. I'm sure that my colleagues will bomb it again," he says through an interpreter.

In a preview released by CNN, Mr Rivers puts to Samudra that he has twisted the words of the Koran to justify the 2002 attacks which killed 202 people including 24 Britons.

Bali Bombers To Be Executed, Say Indonesia Prosecutors
-- The Guardian

Three men to be executed by firing squad after bombings six years ago left more than 200 dead

The three men who carried out the Bali bombings six years ago that left more than 200 people dead will be executed next month, Indonesian prosecutors said today.

Imam Samudra, Amrozi Nurhasyim and Ali Ghufron had "exhausted their legal options", Jasman Panjaitan, a spokesman for Indonesia's attorney general, told reporters.

The announcement is politically sensitive as the government has been nervous that a confirmed execution will arouse some public sympathy for the trio. But the country's vice-president, Jusuf Kalla, told reporters after Muslim prayers that the government did not have "any hesitations" about the death sentences for Indonesia's worst terrorist attack.

They will be executed by a firing squad in the island prison where they are being held. No exact date was given.
