Official: Chad Ends Raids On Rebels In Sudan -- AP

N'DJAMENA, Chad (AP) — Chad's interim defense minister said his country ended its air force raids on Chadian rebel positions in Sudan on Sunday.

Adoum Younousmi said raids, the first his country has ever conducted in Sudan, ended with Chadian forces destroying seven pockets of rebels.

He provided no rebel casualty figures, but said the raids, up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) into Sudan, also involved Chadian soldiers who captured about 100 prisoners who will soon be paraded before the media in Chad.

Sudan Backed Rebels Fail Again

June 25, 2008: The Chadian National Alliance rebels have been beaten again, and the survivors of the recent offensive have fled back to Sudan. The rebel force was apparently over a thousand men, and less than a third of them got back across the border. Many have surrendered to the Chad army. Chad is still angry with the EU peacekeepers for not helping out, although the French appear to have provided some crucial intelligence (aerial photos of rebel movements). But it was up to the army to confront the rebels and fight it out.

My Comment: After a number of excursions .... all of them failing .... a non-military solution is now being examined. Sudan cannot defeat Chad, and Chad does not have the resources to go into the Sudan. A compromise will be reached.
