Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed on 24 August to seek a resolution to years of tensions along the Himalayan border area between the two nuclear-armed countries. 

Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra stated that Modi had spoken to Xi on the sidelines at the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. Modi highlighted India’s concerns about the unresolved issues along the “Line of Actual Control” (LAC), which serves as the effective India-China border. 

“The prime minister underlined that the maintenance of peace and tranquillity in the border areas and observing and respecting the LAC are essential for the normalization of the India-China relationship,” Kwatra said.

Two ministers hold ‘frank’ discussions about developments in India-China border areas as well as bilateral relations 

 In a clear message, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday told his Chinese counterpart Li Shangfu that China’s violation of agreements along the frontier in eastern Ladakh “eroded” the entire basis of bilateral ties and that all issues must be resolved in accordance with the existing pacts. 

At a nearly 45-minute meeting with Li, amid the three-year border row, Singh also conveyed to the Chinese defence minister that the development of India-China ties is premised on prevalence of peace and tranquillity at the border. 

Li’s visit to New Delhi to attend a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is the first by a Chinese defence minister to India after the eastern Ladakh border standoff began in May 2020. 

In a statement, the defence ministry said the two ministers had “frank” discussions about the developments in the India-China border areas as well as bilateral relations.

India was able to repel a Chinese military incursion in contested border territory in the high Himalayas late last year due to unprecedented intelligence-sharing with the U.S. military, U.S. News has learned, an act that caught China’s People’s Liberation Army forces off-guard, enraged Beijing and appears to have forced the Chinese Communist Party to reconsider its approach to land grabs along its borders. 

The U.S. government for the first time provided real-time details to its Indian counterparts of the Chinese positions and force strength in advance of a PLA incursion, says a source familiar with a previously unreported U.S. intelligence review of the encounter into the Arunachal Pradesh region. The information included actionable satellite imagery and was more detailed and delivered more quickly than anything the U.S. had previously shared with the Indian military.

New Delhi CNN — Indian and Chinese troops have clashed on their disputed Himalayan border, the first known incident between the two nuclear-armed Asian powers in nearly two years. 

In a statement, India’s Ministry of Defense said soldiers from both sides sustained minor injuries in the face-off, which took place Friday in the Tawang Sector in India’s northeastern territory of Arunachal Pradesh, a remote, inhospitable region that borders southern China. 

The 2,100 mile-long (3,379-kilometer) disputed border has long been the source of friction between New Delhi and Beijing, with tensions escalating sharply in June 2020 when hand-to-hand fighting between the two sides resulted in the deaths of at least 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers in Aksai Chin-Ladakh.

VOA: India, China Withdraw Troops from Disputed Himalayan Border Area 

NEW DELHI — Indian and Chinese troops are pulling back from one of the several disputed border areas in the Himalayan mountains where they have been locked in a standoff for over two years. 

The Indian Defense Ministry said in a statement Thursday evening that troops had begun to disengage from the area of Gogra-Hotsprings “in a coordinated and planned way, which is conducive to peace and tranquility in the border areas.” 

The announcement marks a step forward in resolving a military standoff that began after a June 2020 clash in Ladakh in the western Himalayas killed 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers.

India and the US will kick-start an over two-week-long mega military exercise in Uttarakhand's Auli in October amid the fast-evolving regional security scenario. The 18th edition of exercise "Yudh Abhyas" is scheduled to take place from October 14 to 31. 

Beijing: China's defence ministry on Thursday said it firmly opposes any third party meddling in the border issue and hopes India will abide by the bilateral agreements to not hold military drills near the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the very pacts it has been accused of violating in eastern Ladakh leading to a prolonged standoff. 

Senior Colonel Tan Kefei, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defence (MND), made the comments while replying to a question about reports of special forces of the US and India recently holding a joint combat exercise in the southern foothills of the Himalayas and their plans to conduct a joint military exercise code-named "War Exercise" (Yudh Abhyas) in October, close to the border.

Bloomberg: India, China Foreign Ministers Discuss Russia's War in Ukraine, Border Crisis 

(Bloomberg) -- India and China discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine and their own border standoff during an unannounced visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the first since tensions erupted between the neighbors two years ago. 

Ties between New Delhi and Beijing haven’t returned to normal yet and will continue to be disturbed as long as troops remain deployed along their shared Himalayan border, India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told reporters Friday. “I would describe our current situation as work in progress.” 

The threat of bloody hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbors, like the one witnessed in 2020, remains as military commanders from both sides have made only marginal progress in several meetings over the past two years. Soldiers remain deployed toe-to-toe in several locations as troop pullback has been limited to just three friction points along the border.

Reuters: India says it is concerned about China's new border law 

NEW DELHI, Oct 27 (Reuters) - India's foreign ministry said on Wednesday that it was concerned about a new law passed by China last week to strengthen border protection amid a protracted military standoff between the two Asian giants along a contested Himalayan frontier. 

On Saturday, China passed a dedicated law how it governs and guards its 22,000-km (14,000-mile) land border shared with 14 neighboring countries, including Russia, nuclear-capable North Korea, and India. 

"China's unilateral decision to bring about a legislation which can have implication on our existing bilateral arrangements on border management as well as on the boundary question is of concern to us," foreign ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said in a statement.

SCMP: Chinese media returns fire in info war with video of ‘captured Indians’  

A Chinese journalist has posted a video online that he suggested showed China's troops escorting members of the Indian armed forces, following disputed reports that India detained Chinese soldiers during the border stand-off. 

A journalist from nationalistic tabloid Global Times posted the video on Twitter on Thursday with the hashtags "ChinaIndiaStandOff" and "IndiaChinaBorder". 

It appeared to show Chinese troops escorting what the tweet implied were captured Indian soldiers, who were blindfolded. 

The tweet, by journalist Yang Sheng, did not state when the video was filmed, and read: "PLA is the most civilised military force in treating prisoners of its enemies. Those Indian soldiers and officers in the video will agree with me."

CNBC: China isn’t the only huge Asian economy with a coal shortage now

The Straits Times: India-China border talks stall, with both sides blaming each other for breakdown 

NEW DELHI - India and China have blamed each other for a breakdown in the latest border talks, in a setback to efforts to negotiate a way out of the worst row in decades that has plunged relations to an all-time low. 

Militaries of both countries held the 13th round of corps commander negotiations on Sunday (Oct 10) over disengagement in Ladakh region. 

But the meeting ended in finger pointing, with China calling India's demand for disengagement "unreasonable", and India accusing China of blocking its "constructive suggestions" for resolving the issues.

The PLA views India’s growing military cooperation with the United States with some concern but generally does not consider India a major threat. 

The Indian military sees China as its biggest threat, as Chief of Defense Staff Bipin Rawat made clear in an interview in June 2021. The Indian Army has moved 50,000 troops to its border with China in 2021, with about 20,000 troops in the Ladakh sector. So how does the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) view India? The PLA’s media, including the newspaper PLA Daily and the TV program “Defense Review,” offer some insights. An unidentfied official told News18 that 200 soldiers from China had crossed over from Tibet. Indian and Chinese troops were engaged in a face-off near the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district last week, News18 reported on Friday, citing unidentified officials. 

The incident happened between the border pass of Yangtse and Bum La. 

An official told News18 that around 200 Chinese soldiers had crossed over into India’s side from Tibet and a few of them were detained.

The troops in this area were in a face-off situation since May last year 

New Delhi: In a major breakthrough, India and China have withdrawn troops from the friction Patrolling Point (PP) 17A in Gogra along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh, the Indian Army said on Friday. 

The Indian Army said that both the countries have ceased forward deployments in this area in a phased, coordinated and verified manner. 

 “The disengagement process was carried out over two days, i.e., August 4 and 5. The troops of both sides are now in their respective permanent bases,” the Indian Army said in a statement.

Sources said the meeting, which began around 10.30 am, continued until 7.30 pm, and defence establishment sources were hopeful of reaching an understanding for disengagement from Hot Spring and Gogra Post, Patrolling Point (PP) 15 and PP17A, respectively, friction points. 

India and China held the 12th round of the Corps Commander-level talks on Saturday to find a possible resolution for the nearly 15-month-long military standoff in eastern Ladakh. The meeting was held on the Chinese side of Chushul-Moldo Border Personnel Meeting point.

(Bloomberg) — India has redirected at least 50,000 additional troops to its border with China in a historic shift toward an offensive military posture against the world’s second-biggest economy. 

Although the two countries battled in the Himalayas in 1962, India’s strategic focus has primarily been Pakistan since the British left the subcontinent, with the long-time rivals fighting three wars over the disputed region of Kashmir. 

Yet since the deadliest India-China fighting in decades last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration has sought to ease tensions with Islamabad and concentrate primarily on countering Beijing. 

Over the past few months, India has moved troops and fighter jet squadrons to three distinct areas along its border with China, according to four people familiar with the matter. 

All in all, India now has roughly 200,000 troops focused on the border, two of them said, which is an increase of more than 40% from last year.

Official Chinese Communist Party Social Media Account Mocks India's Covid-19 Crisis

A social media account run by the official law enforcement agency of the Chinese Communist Party posted a message on Weibo, which is China's version of Twitter, on Saturday that mocked India's catastrophic COVID-19 outbreak. ‘Lighting a fire in China VS lighting a fire in India,’ the post read. The image on the left shows a Chinese rocket being launched into space. The image on the right shows Indians cremating the bodies of those who died of COVID-19. In response to outrage from Chinese internet users, the post was deleted

The account, which is run by the official Chinese law enforcement agency, the Communist Party’s Central Political and Legal Affairs commission, posted the controversial message on Weibo, which is China’s version of Twitter. 

The post included two images juxtaposed with one another. One photo shows an image of a rocket launch in China while the other shows dead bodies being cremated in India.

WNU Editor: Over the years I have lost count on how many times my Chinese friends and contacts asked me this question .... why do people outside of China "hate" their country. I always say it is not the people that this animosity is directed at. It is at the Chinese government and its policies.

India and China have completed the pull-back of troops from part of their disputed Himalayan border, a joint statement issued by the Indian defence ministry says. 

Soldiers completed their withdrawal from the Pangong Tso Lake area on Saturday, according to the communiqué.

Clashes on the poorly marked border led to the deaths of 24 troops last June. 

Both sides say they will work to cut tensions on other parts of the border, or Line of Actual Control.
