Court-Martial Of The Navy SEALS -- A Commentary

Three Navy SEALS were recently charged with physically assaulting Ahmed Hashim Abed, a captured terrorist, and now face trial by special court-martial. There are apparently other charges, including making false official statements and dereliction of duty. It all seems pretty rotten, and in fighting terrorists who respect no law other than (possibly) their own, it is absurd to hold U.S. military personnel to strict standards while holding terrorists to none whatever. However, there is no reason yet to assume that the military has done that or will do so.

Clubbing The Navy Seals -- A Commentary

From The Washington Times:

Prosecuting warriors is no way to win a war.

Two elite Navy SEALs were arraigned on Monday on charges related to punching a terrorist leader once in the gut, with a third SEAL to face arraignment later. Special Operations Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew McCabe is charged with unlawfully striking a terrorist suspect "in the midsection with his fist" and for purportedly lying to a Naval Criminal Investigative Service officer about the incident. Petty Officers Julio Huertas and Jonathan Keefe are charged with impeding the investigation and dereliction of duty in failing to safeguard a detainee.

The proceedings against these heroes are an outrage to all the brave Americans serving in uniform to defend this country, especially those deployed in harm's way.

Let's Be Worthy Of Their Sacrifice -- A Commentary

This holiday season, home in Texas and surrounded by close friends and family, I often found myself thinking about virtual strangers.

I met them this fall when I spoke at the Naval Special Warfare Foundation (NSWF) dinner. The NSWF supports naval commandoes with scholarships and assistance for families of Navy Seals killed or wounded in combat or training.

During my White House years, I came to know of the heroic actions of the Seals and other special operators in the global war on terror. These men willingly follow evil into dark and perilous places. They volunteered to be on the front edge of the conflict whose outcome will shape this century.
