Wired: Iranian Spies Accidentally Leaked Videos of Themselves Hacking

IBM's X-Force security team obtained five hours of APT35 hacking operations, showing exactly how the group steals data from email accounts—and who it's targeting.

When security researchers piece together the blow-by-blow of a state-sponsored hacking operation, they're usually following a thin trail of malicious code samples, network logs, and connections to faraway servers. That detective work gets significantly easier when hackers record what they’re doing and then upload the video to an unprotected server on the open internet. Which is precisely what researchers at IBM say a group of Iranian hackers did.

Researchers at IBM's X-Force security team revealed today that they've obtained roughly five hours of video footage that appears to have been recorded directly from the screens of hackers working for a group IBM calls ITG18, and which other security firms refer to as APT35 or Charming Kitten. It's one of the most active state-sponsored espionage teams linked to the government of Iran. The leaked videos were found among 40 gigabytes of data that the hackers had apparently stolen from victim accounts, including US and Greek military personnel. Other clues in the data suggest that the hackers targeted US State Department staff and an unnamed Iranian-American philanthropist.

Daily Mail: Microsoft claims Iranian hackers have been targeting a U.S. presidential campaign, American government officials, media outlets and prominent expatriate Iranians

* Microsoft security expert Tom Burt said in a blog post on Friday that hackers had targeted several email accounts - including those of expatriate Iranians
* Burt confirmed four email accounts were breached but they did not belong to US campaigns or officials
* He would not reveal which presidential campaign was targeted
* Microsoft charged the group Phosphorus with the hacking attempt
* The group made more than 2,700 attempts to hack accounts

Microsoft says hackers linked to the Iranian government have targeted a U.S. presidential campaign, as well as government officials, media targets and prominent ex-patriate Iranians.

The company declined to identify the campaign, citing privacy concerns.

Corporate vice president for security Tom Burt wrote in a blog post Friday that owners of four accounts that were successfully breached have been notified.

He said those accounts that were compromised were not related to U.S. campaigns or officials.

He says the attacks by a group Microsoft calls Phosphorous occurred during a 30-day period in August and September.

A federal prosecutor argued in court Monday that Yujing Zhang, the Chinese woman arrested trying to enter President Donald Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, “lies to everyone she encounters,” adding that a search of her hotel room uncovered more than $8,000 in cash, as well as a “signal-detector” device used to reveal hidden cameras.

Found in the search: $7,500 in U.S. hundred-dollar bills and $663 in Chinese currency, in addition to nine USB drives, five SIM cards and other electronics, according to federal prosecutor Rolando Garcia. Signal detectors are portable devices that can detect radio waves, magnetic fields and hidden-camera equipment.

Prosecutors are treating the case as a national security matter and an FBI counterintelligence squad is investigating, sources familiar with the inquiry told the Miami Herald.

.... Secret Service agent Samuel Ivanovich, who interviewed Zhang on the day of her arrest, testified at the hearing. He stated that when another agent put Zhang’s thumb drive into his computer, it immediately began to install files, a “very out-of-the-ordinary” event that he had never seen happen before during this kind of analysis. The agent had to immediately stop the analysis to halt any further corruption of his computer, Ivanovich testified. The analysis is ongoing but still inconclusive, he said.

I have never seen or heard anything like that either. You have to open a file to have it installed on your computer. It never installs automatically. If this report is true, we are dealing with something that the public definitely does not have access to.

WASHINGTON — Updated Wednesday, Dec. 19: The United Nations spokesman has issued a comment about the breach and the National Security Agency said it would decline to comment. Both are included in the story below.

Hackers infiltrated the European Union’s diplomatic communications network for years, downloading thousands of cables that reveal concerns about an unpredictable Trump administration and struggles to deal with Russia and China and the risk that Iran would revive its nuclear program.

In one cable, European diplomats described a meeting between President Trump and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia in Helsinki, Finland, as “successful (at least for Putin).”

Another cable, written after a July 16 meeting, relayed a detailed report and analysis of a discussion between European officials and President Xi Jinping of China, who was quoted comparing Mr. Trump’s “bullying” of Beijing to a “no-rules freestyle boxing match.”

The U.S. blamed North Korea for the WannaCry ransomware attack that affected hundreds of thousands of computers globally this year, offering further justification for the White House’s campaign to step up international pressure on the regime.

“After careful investigation, the United States is publicly attributing the massive WannaCry cyberattack to North Korea,” White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert told reporters Tuesday. “We do not make this allegation lightly. We do so with evidence, and we do so with partners.”

WannaCry crippled parts of the U.K.’s state-run National Health Service and compromised companies such as FedEx Corp. and Nissan Motor Co.

U.S. Justice Department To Charge Six Members Of The Russian Government For Hacking The DNC Servers Last Year

Reuters: U.S. authorities identify six Russian officials in DNC hack: WSJ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department has gathered enough evidence to charge six members of the Russian government in the hacking of Democratic National Committee computers before the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the investigation.

Federal agents and prosecutors in Washington, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and San Francisco have been cooperating on the DNC investigation and prosecutors could bring the case to court next year, it said.

By identifying individual Russian military and intelligence hackers with charges, U.S. authorities could make it difficult for them to travel, but arrests and jailing would be unlikely, according to the Journal report.

The hacking investigation, conducted by cybersecurity experts, predates the appointment in May of federal special counsel Robert Mueller to oversee the probe of alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible collusion with President Donald Trump’s campaign.

I have asked "my experts" repeatedly since the DNC hack on how good are U.S. authorities to identify (with a high degree of certainty) those who are responsible for this cyber-attack/hack. The answer .... if the cyber-attackers/hackers are professional .... is no. In the case of the DNC hack .... because the FBI was not permitted to look at the servers (the investigation was done by a private company that the DNC hired) .... I have been told that it makes an investigation even more harder to pursue. So why is the Justice Department so gung-ho to pursue charges? My guess is that some people from Russia are either talking, or the U.S. government has the means to track web traffic that they have not told anyone else. Either way .... as someone who loves tech stuff .... I look forward to the trial when this evidence is presented.

Foreign Policy: Private Email of Top U.S. Russia Intelligence Official Hacked

As concerns about cyberattacks grow, hackers are going after Russia wonks.

On Tuesday morning, a hacker going by the name Johnnie Walker sent a group email to an unknown number of recipients claiming to have a trove of emails from the private account of a U.S. intelligence official.

“The U.S. State Department officer’s email has been hacked,” the email announced, and included at least two years’ worth of personal emails from the private Gmail account of a State Department official working in the secretive intelligence arm of the State Department focusing on Russia.

The sender said the archive included exchanges between the official and “CIA officers and other intelligence agencies, mainstream media, NGOs, and international funds” that would “give you evidence of who is responsible for agenda formation in many countries worldwide, especially where the situation is insecure.”

The official involved is in a senior position in the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, according to a 2017 department directory. Even though the official’s name is public, Foreign Policy is not identifying him at the department’s request, citing security concerns.

The emails, from a nongovernment account, include personal information.

Peppering the 8,000 pages of purported CIA hacking data released Tuesday by WikiLeaks are reviews of some of the world’s most popular antivirus products.

The hackers are quoted taking potshots at antivirus firms, suggesting the American intelligence agencies are keenly aware of flaws in the products meant to be keeping us all safe online.

The data published by WikiLeaks isn’t systematic enough to draw firm conclusions about the reliability of one product or another and the uncertain dating means the CIA’s critiques provide more of a snapshot than an overview.

Still, the posts show America’s top cyberspies aren’t always flattering about commonly used security software.

Politico: C-SPAN 'investigating' why congressional livestream switched to Russia Today

On Thursday afternoon, C-SPAN's online live video coverage of Congress abruptly abruptly switched to a live feed of the Kremlin-backed news channel Russia Today. The livestream continued to show RT for about 10 minutes, before switching back to C-SPAN.

The sudden cut to RT, an English-language network funded by the Russian government, happened at about 2:30 p.m., while Rep. Maxine Waters was speaking about SEC regulation.

Deadspin editor Tim Burke, who was watching the C-SPAN livestream at the time, recorded a video of the sudden switch.

Bloomberg: Russian Hacking Code Found in Vermont Power Utility Computer

* Homeland Security alerted power providers to search for code

Computer code connected to Russian cyberattacks by U.S. intelligence agencies has been found hidden in a laptop at a Vermont public utility, a development that emerged a day after the Obama administration hit Russia with sanctions for hacking in this year’s U.S. election.

The laptop wasn’t connected to the power grid at the time, the Burlington Electric Department said in a statement Friday. It said it scanned its computer network and found the malware after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security sent out an alert about the code to owners and operators of critical infrastructure.

“We took immediate action to isolate the laptop and alerted federal officials of this finding,” utility spokesman Mike Kanarick said in the statement. “Our team is working with federal officials to trace this malware and prevent any other attempts to infiltrate utility systems. We have briefed state officials and will support the investigation fully.”

Russian hackers attacked the unclassified email system used by the Joint Chiefs of Staff in August 2015, a former top military officer confirmed to Fox News late Thursday.

"Our unclassified network was attacked by a very sophisticated attacker who operated with astonishing speed and skill," said retired Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the time of the breach. "Not an amateur."

The cyberattack targeting the upper echelons of the military was first reported by CBS News. On March 22, 2016 William “Billy” Rhinehart, a regional field director at the Democratic National Committee, received an email from Google warning him that someone tried to access his account and that he should immediately change his password. He complied.

Unfortunately for Mr. Rhinehart, it wasn’t Google who sent him that email. He, along with many others, were a victim of Threat Group 4127 — the SecureWorks designation for Fancy Bear (CrowdStrike), APT28 (FireEye), and Sofacy (Kaspersky Lab). Secureworks assesses that TG 4127 “is operating from the Russian Federation and is gathering intelligence on behalf of the Russian government.”

Reuters: Yahoo says hackers stole data from 500 million accounts in 2014

Yahoo Inc (YHOO.O) said on Thursday that at least 500 million of its accounts were hacked in 2014 by what it believed was a state-sponsored actor, a theft that appeared to be the world's biggest known cyber breach by far.

Cyber thieves may have stolen names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth and encrypted passwords, the company said. But unprotected passwords, payment card data and bank account information did not appear to have been compromised, signaling that some of the most valuable user data was not taken.

The attack on Yahoo was unprecedented in size, more than triple other large attacks on sites such as eBay Inc (EBAY.O), and it comes to light at a difficult time for Yahoo.

WASHINGTON— James Clapper, the U.S. Director of National Intelligence, suggested Wednesday that recent computer attacks carried out against the Democratic Party were perpetrated by Russians.

But he left his message somewhat ambiguous, perhaps intentionally, as the U.S. and Russia continue to spar on a range of issues. And he predicted that cyberattacks will be a pressing challenge for the next president.

Mr. Clapper, speaking at a conference for intelligence professionals, cited President Barack Obama, noting that the president had previously said, “and I quote, ‘Experts have attributed this to the Russians.’”

Mr. Clapper continued, “So I won’t get out ahead of the president on this, particularly while the [Federal Bureau of Investigation] is conducting an investigation. But I can reiterate his other point. The Russians hack our systems all the time, not just government but also corporate.”

He added, “So do the Chinese and others including nonstate actors. The point is, cyber will continue to be a huge problem for the next presidential administration.”

AFP: French submarine maker hit by secret data leak: report

French defence contractor DCNS has been hit by a massive leak of secret data on its submarines likely to alarm India, Malaysia and Chile, which use the boats, The Australian newspaper reported Wednesday.

The 22,400 leaked pages, which the daily said it had seen, detail the combat capability of the Scorpene-class submarine DCNS designed for the Indian navy, and variants of which are used by Malaysia and Chile.

Brazil is also due to deploy the vessels from 2018.

Australia awarded DCNS an Aus$50 billion (US$38 billion) contract last April to design and build its next generation of submarines.

But Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull sought to play down the impact in Canberra saying while the leak was "of concern", the Scorpene was a different model to the subs Australia is buying.

FBI Investigating Reports That Russian Hackers Have Targeted The New York Times

CNN: FBI investigating Russian hack of New York Times reporters, others

(CNN)Hackers thought to be working for Russian intelligence have carried out a series of cyber breaches targeting reporters at the New York Times and other US news organizations, according to US officials briefed on the matter.

The intrusions, detected in recent months, are under investigation by the FBI and other US security agencies. Investigators so far believe that Russian intelligence is likely behind the attacks and that Russian hackers are targeting news organizations as part of a broader series of hacks that also have focused on Democratic Party organizations, the officials said.

The FBI declined to comment and a spokesperson for The New York Times would not confirm the attacks or the investigation.

Reuters: U.S. Democrat Pelosi gets 'obscene and sick' calls after hack

U.S. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said on Saturday she has been flooded with "obscene and sick" calls and text messages after a hacker linked to Russia posted personal contact information online for her and hundreds of other Democratic lawmakers and aides.

Pelosi sent a letter to colleagues warning them to take precautions and said she was changing her phone number after a hacker identified as "Guccifer 2.0" posted the personal cellphone numbers and email addresses on Friday.

The posted information appeared to have been gained in the electronic breach of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the fundraising and campaign arm of Democrats in the House of Representatives.

Saturday’s leak, published by DC leaks, includes hundreds of internal documents from multiple departments of Soros’ groups, predominantly the Open Society Foundations.

WASHINGTON—U.S. officials are discussing whether to respond to computer breaches of Democratic Party organizations with economic sanctions against Russia, but they haven’t reached a decision about how to proceed, according to several people familiar with the matter.

Levying sanctions would require the White House to publicly accuse Russia, or Russian-backed hackers, of committing the breach and then leaking embarrassing information. The U.S. has frequently opted not to publicly release attribution for cyber-assaults, though Washington did openly accuse North Korea of carrying out an embarrassing breach of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. in 2014.

WNU Editor: In the past few years we have heard and read detailed reports on how the U.S. has hacked the phones and databases of literally every country on the planet .... and now they are crying when it is done to them. As for the DNC hack .... quite frankly I do not think anyone knows with 100% certainty on who did it .... and I think that the big fear is not that more information is going to be probably released before the election (though that is on their minds right now) ... but the real worry is the possibility that the ones who are responsible for this hack are actually people who work within the DNC itself, and who are fed-up with the corruption that they are seeing.
