Ethiopia Urges UN To Act Against Eritrea

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — Ethiopia on Saturday criticised the UN for not taking strong measures against arch-foe Eritrea over its failure to withdraw troops from disputed territories along its border with Djibouti.

A UN resolution adopted last January gave Asmara five weeks to pull out, and the Security Council earlier this week concluded that Eritrea had not fulfilled its obligations 10 weeks after the request.

My Comment: I see war clouds in the horizon. Ethiopia and Eritrea are like Pakistan and India .... two sides at perpetual war with each other.

U.N. Abandons Eritrea-Ethiopia Peace Mission

The United Nations Security Council voted to abdandon its Eritrea-Ethiopia peacekeeping mission.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously Wednesday to end its eight-year peacekeeping mission between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has warned that failure of the mission could lead to a new war between the Horn of Africa neighbors.

Council members and other diplomats said the U.N. had little choice but to withdraw its 1,700-strong force, which has been monitoring a 15-mile-wide, 620-mile-long buffer zone between the two nations.

The vote means the entire mission will be terminated Thursday, said Vietnam's U.N. ambassador, Le Luong Minh.

My Comment: Ethiopia and Eritrea have already had a war in this region. With the peace keepers leaving and no political resolution to the conflict, expect an arms buildup followed by arm skirmishes in the next few months.
