Berlin’s EU presidency motto has echoes of MAGA.

BERLIN — Forget Make America Great Again. Here comes Make Europe Strong Again.

The German government has settled on “Gemeinsam. Europa wieder stark machen" — which translates into English as "Together. Making Europe strong again" — as its slogan for the country's upcoming presidency of the Council of the EU, which kicks off on July 1.

The official English motto is a less Trumpian "Together for Europe's recovery," however.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said Friday that the motto — launched along with a Möbius strip logo and website — aims to illustrate the German presidency will have to "find compromises and solutions to tackle the challenges posed by the corona pandemic" across Europe.

The logo is meant to symbolize "joint action emerging from the EU's diversity again and again," he said.

MUNICH - The first panel at the 2012 Munich Security Conference examined whether Germany should assume a role as the regional, benign hegemon in Europe. But one speaker, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, told the Germans that it's just never going to happen so they shouldn't even try.

The question posed to Sikorski and the other panelists at the Friday evening discussion was whether Germany could play a role in Europe today similar to the role the United States played in Europe after World War II. Sikorski said that Germany doesn't have the attributes of a hegemon, such as an overwhelming economy, a large military budget, and an international role commensurate of a preeminent regional power.

My Comment: My advice to the Germans .... the Polish minister is right. You do not want to be responsible for the affairs of countries like Greece, Italy, Ireland, etc .... the costs and headaches are just too much.
