Somalia Facing Famine

Al Jazeera: UN chief: World must act to avert famine in Somalia

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres makes emergency visit as worsening drought leaves 6.2 million hungry.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Somalia on an emergency visit aimed at drumming up support for an effort to avert a famine that could affect 6.2 million people.

Guterres said the world "must act now" after he arrived in the capital Mogadishu.

Somalia's newly-elected President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed met with the UN chief on Tuesday.

United Nations: 260,000 Died In The 2011 Somali Famine

Somalia Famine 'Killed 260,000 People' -- BBC

Nearly 260,000 people died during the famine that hit Somalia from 2010 to 2012, a study shows.

Half of them were children under the age of five, says the report by the UN food agency and the US-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network.

The number of deaths was higher than the estimated 220,000 people who died during the 1992 famine.

The crisis was caused by a severe drought, worsened by conflict between rival groups fighting for power.

UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) senior economist Mark Smulders said the "true enormity of this human tragedy" had emerged for the first time from the study, done jointly with the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (Fews Net).

Somalia's Famine Is Over, Says UN

Famine Conditions In Somalia Have Ended, UN Says -- BBC

Famine conditions have ended in war-torn Somalia six months after being first declared, the UN has said.

The improvement in access to food is due to a good harvest and significant humanitarian assistance, it said.

But the UN humanitarian co-ordinator for the country said the situation remained serious.

Nearly a third of the population - some 2.34 million people - still need emergency support, the Somalia Food Security Nutrition Analysis Unit said.

Last month, the UN said that tens of thousands of people would have died of starvation by the time the food crisis ended.

Somalia has been worst hit by East Africa's worst drought in 60 years, because of its instability.

Only 4 African Leaders Decided To Attend The African Union Donors Conference On Famine

Few African Leaders Show Up For Famine Summit -- L.A. Times

Only four of 54 member nations attend the African Union donors conference in Ethiopia, aimed at raising money to ease the crisis in the Horn of Africa.

Reporting from Johannesburg, South Africa—Most of Africa's heads of state failed to turn up Thursday for the first African Union donor conference in Ethiopia to raise money for the Horn of Africa famine, leaving activists disappointed with the pledges.

Of the African Union's 54 member nations, only the heads of Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea and Djibouti participated in the conference in Addis Ababa, along with the head of the transitional government in Somalia, the country hit hardest by the famine. Critics accused African leaders of failing to make good on their rhetoric about finding African solutions for African problems.

Famine In Somalia -- News Updates August 15, 2011

Terror Group Blocking Aid To Starving Somalis -- USA Today

The starvation of tens of thousands of people in Somalia — including 29,000 children — is being worsened by Islamist jihadists who are creating a catastrophe by blocking aid groups from getting food and and water to the suffering, according to interviews with aid groups, diplomats and experts.

The worst drought in decades is affecting several countries in the Horn of Africa, but the famine is worst in southern Somalia, where al-Shabaab, an Islamist terrorist organization with links to al-Qaeda, is preventing aid groups from helping nearly 3 million people living under its control, according to the State Department and aid groups.

Is Somalia's Islamist Al Shabab Group Defeated?

What Does Al Shabab's Withdrawal From Somalia's Capital Mean? -- Christian Science Monitor

The Islamist group Al Shabab withdrew from Somalia's capital city, Mogadishu, this weekend, but whether that is a sign of success for the African Union mission and Somalian government is unclear.

On Saturday, al Shabab, southern Somalia’s Islamic rebel movement, pulled out of the capital Mogadishu. For months, Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and approximately 9,000 troops from the African Union Mission for Somalia (AMISOM) had been battling al Shabab block by block in the city. In July, Boubacar Diarra, the head of AMISOM, argued in Foreign Policy that the battle for Mogadishu demonstrated what the force could accomplish with donor support. Diarra did not reveal what AMISOM’s strategy would be after taking Mogadishu, except to say that if donors provided the means to increase the force to 20,000, AMISOM could drive al Shabab out of Somalia. Now that the conquest of Mogadishu is at least momentarily complete, a moment of truth has come for the TFG and AMISOM. What comes next?

Why Is Africa Ignoring The Famine In The Horn Of Africa

Famine Crisis: Africa's Leaders Postpone Fundraising Conference By Two Weeks -- The Telegraph

Africa's leaders postponed for more than two weeks a conference to raise funds for the continent's famine victims, despite the first official estimates showing that almost 30,000 young children had died since the start of the crisis.

The African Union’s "pledging conference", to raise money for the 12 million people desperately needing food in the Horn of Africa, had been scheduled for next Tuesday.

It was intended to address the fact that despite the rest of the world having raised more than £600 million in aid, there is less than £350,000 in the African Union’s "special famine fund". This is despite the Union’s 54 countries having a combined GDP of more than £1.2 trillion.

My Comment: Bottom line .... the rest of Africa does not want to give any money to the famine relief in Somalia. The question that needs to be asked is why .... hmmmm .... I suspect that the answer is one that will make us wonder why are we shouldering this responsibility for aid when the rest of Africa clearly does not want to get involved and are in fact .... running away from it.

Famine In Somalia -- News Updates August 4, 2011

Famine Spreads To Somali Capital -- The Telegraph

Three new areas of Somalia, including parts of Mogadishu, are now in famine, figures released on Wednesday showed.

Camps for displaced people in and near the capital were among the worst hit, the UN-sponsored Famine Early Warning Network said.

Two rural areas far from the city, Balcad and Cadalei, had also tipped into “Phase-5 famine” the group said, adding: “Despite increased attention, the humanitarian response remains inadequate.

AU Force Presses Offensive to Ease Somali Food Aid -- Voice of America

African Union troops remain on the offensive in Somalia in an effort to ease the flow of food aid to the famine-stricken country.

A spokesman for the AU peacekeeping force, Paddy Akunda, tells VOA's Somali Service that troops are trying to capture a Mogadishu football stadium and other key areas controlled by militant group al-Shabab.

Al-Shabab has denied a famine is taking place, and banned many aid groups from operating in areas of southern and central Somalia under its rule.

Somali Refugees Brave Fighting In Mogadishu In Hope Of UN Food Aid -- The Guardian

Tens of thousands flee drought-hit southern Somalia as UN begins food deliveries to war-torn capital.

Hit by the worst drought in 60 years, tens of thousands of people are leaving the rural areas of central and southern Somalia for the war-ravaged capital, Mogadishu, where last week the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) started an airlift operation to deliver to 20 feeding centres.

Despite continuing fighting, with troops of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and African Union-led forces battling the Islamic militants of al-Shabaab, more and more people are coming into the city, hoping to find relief from a drought that is affecting 11 million in Somalia alone.

According to Agence France-Presse, he blames Chinese land buy-ups there for greatly exacerbating the already tremendous humanitarian crisis and causing social conflicts and conditions that rob small farmers of their livlihoods.

Famine Is Spreading In The Horn Of Africa -- News Roundup July 29, 2011

East Africa's 'Cataclysmic Downward Spiral Of Suffering' -- Spiegel Online

The UN has started airlifting food to famine-plagued Somalia, a measure that could save thousands of starving children in the divided country. German commentators, however, argue that it is time to address the causes of such a famine and push for at-risk regions to create self-sufficient agricultural industries.

The United Nations airlifted 10 tons of emergency nutritional supplements to treat starving children into Somali capital Mogadishu on Wednesday as part of a major international effort to provide relief in the worst famine to strike the region in 60 years. It was the first of a number of airlifts planned for the coming weeks, according to UN World Food Program (WFP) officials. One week ago, the UN declared an official famine in parts of Somalia.

War In Somalia Continues As Famine Spreads

Somalia Takes The Fight To Militant Group -- CNN

Nairobi, Kenya (CNN) -- Somali government forces launched an offensive on Islamist strongholds in Mogadishu Thursday morning, killing 15 members of the al Qaeda-inspired group Al-Shabaab, a military commander said.

Speaking to state radio, Col. Abdullahi Ali Anod, commander of the presidential palace, said the president ordered the offensive in northern Mogadishu.

Fighting has intensified this summer as Somali government forces -- backed by troops from the African Union -- have battled insurgents from the militant Al-Shabaab.

International Groups Accelerate Effort To Relieve East Africa's Famine -- Christian Science Monitor

The first UN plane in two years is scheduled to go into the Somali capital's airport Wednesday carrying food aid. Some 3.7 million people in Somalia alone need help.

The first in a series of food flights is due to land in Somalia’s capital late Wednesday, bringing 10 tons of supplies specially formulated to save children from starving to death. The airlift is one of several signs of an acceleration in the international relief effort to help people suffering after two years of drought spread across southern Somalia, eastern Ethiopia, and northern Kenya.

Somalia Famine: WFP Delays Airlift Of Food To Mogadishu -- BBC

The UN World Food Programme says it is delaying airlifting food to Somalia's capital for administrative reasons.

It was to be the first airlift of food aid since the UN declared a famine in two areas of Somalia last week.

Islamists, who control most of Somalia, have banned the WFP from their areas and thousands of people are fleeing towards the capital in search of food.

Somali Foreign Minister Mohamed Ibrahim has warned more than 3.5 million people "may starve to death" in his country.

Al-Shabab, which has ties to al-Qaeda, has accused the groups it has banned from its territories of being political.

Somalia Urges ‘International Intervention’ in Fight Against Famine, Drought -- Voice of America

An official of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) is calling for “international intervention” to help his administration combat drought and famine, which has forced thousands of Somalis to flee to neighboring countries.

Government spokesman Omar Osman also accused the hard-line Islamic insurgent group, al-Shabab, of thwarting humanitarian relief efforts.

Famine Fears Grow In The Horn Of Africa

Refugees Flee War And Starvation In Somalia -- L.A. Times

An aid official calls it the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Aid camps in neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia are overwhelmed as drought and Shabab militants take their toll.

Reporting from Nairobi, Kenya, and Mogadishu — To save themselves, Rahmo Ibrahim Madey and three of her children escaped on foot this month from southern Somalia's Bakol region — a drought-racked land controlled by the Islamist militants of the Shabab group.

Less than 20 miles from their destination, the battered capital of Mogadishu, Madey's 1-year-old daughter, Fadumo, died of starvation.
