Former Libyan Leader Gaddafi's Second Son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Has Been Released From Prison In Libya

BBC: Gaddafi's son Saif 'freed' in Libya

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, second son of the late deposed Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi, is said to have been freed under an amnesty, in a move which could fuel further instability.

His father's preferred successor, he had been held by a militia in the town of Zintan for the past six years.

The Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Battalion said he had been released on Friday but he has not been shown in public.

Local reports suggest he is now in the eastern city of Bayda with relatives.

The militia group said it was acting on a request from the "interim government".

He is wanted for his role in suppressing protests against his father’s rule and the killing of protesters.

One of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s sons, Saadi, who fled as his father’s regime crumbled in 2011 and who has been under house arrest in Niger ever since, has been extradited to Libya.

A Libyan official said he arrived in the early hours of this morning at Tripoli airport and was transferred to a prison in the capital. The authorities said he would be treated “in accordance with international law”.

Shortly after the news broke, photographs circulated on social media showing Saadi in a blue prison uniform while Libyan guards were shaving his hair and beard.

Colonel Gaddafi’s lawyer daughter was kicked out of her Algerian safe-house because she kept setting fire to it in fits of anger, it emerged today.

Aisha Gaddafi, 37, has an arrest warrant against her name after fleeing Libya when her father was deposed and then killed two years ago.

The bleach blonde, western educated ‘Claudia Schiffer of North Africa’ was widowed in the bombing raids which destroyed Gaddafi’s regime, leaving her as a single mother.

Soon afterwards she arrived in neighbouring Algeria with other family members, and they were given a presidential residence in the south of the country.

The lawyer for the son and one-time heir-apparent of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has given warning that the International Criminal Court's reputation will be damaged if it allows Libya to put him on trial.

Melinda Taylor, one of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi's court-funded defence lawyers, told judges at The Netherlands on Wednesday that any trial in Libya will be "not motivated by a desire for justice but a desire for revenge, and there is no right for revenge under international law."

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Has Not Seen A Lawyer Since His Arrest

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the deposed Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi, has not seen a lawyer since his arrest, a human rights campaigner has told the BBC.

However, Saif al-Islam had no complaints of maltreatment, according to Fred Abrahams of Human Rights Watch.

Mr Abrahams called on Libyan authorities to give him access to a lawyer "as soon as possible".

Saif al-Islam was arrested last month while apparently trying to flee Libya.

He is the most high profile captive from the previous regime.

Mexico today claimed to have broken up an international plot to smuggle Gaddafi's son and his family into the country under false names and with false Mexican documents.

The elaborate plan allegedly involved two Mexicans, a Canadian and a Danish suspect, Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire said.

The plot was uncovered in early September as Al-Saadi Gaddafi was fleeing Libya after his father's ouster. He never made it to Mexico.
