Germany Is Extending Its Arms Export Freeze On Saudi Arabia
DW: German arms export freeze on Saudi Arabia extended
Germany has extended its arms export moratorium on Saudi Arabia by 6 months. If parliament agrees, cabinet also plans to extend a Bundeswehr training mission in Iraq and reconnaissance flights tracking IS in Syria.
Germany's freeze on arms deliveries to Saudi Arabia begun last October andformalized in March would remain in place until March 2020, a German government spokesman announced Wednesday.
The ban — prompted by the killing of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi — had been questioned within Chancellor Angela Merkel's own party following the mystery drone strikes on Saudi oil installations, which the US and Saudi Arabia blame on Iran or its allies.
But Merkel on Tuesday had said that she saw "no conditions, at the moment, for a changed stance" on the German government's side, signaling that the moratorium should be extended beyond its initial expiration date of September 30th.

Germany Extends Its Ban On Arms Exports To Saudi Arabia
Al Jazeera: Germany extends Saudi Arabia arms sales ban
Berlin extends until end of March a ban on weapons exports to Riyadh, citing concern over kingdom's role in Yemen's war.
Germany has extended a temporary ban on arms exports to Saudi Arabia, imposed due to concerns about the kingdom's role in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The embargo was due to expire on March 9, but Germany's foreign minister said on Wednesday the ban was being extended until the end of March to give the government time to evaluate Saudi Arabia's military involvement in Yemen's war.
"We decided this with a view to developments in Yemen," Heiko Maas said after a meeting of Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet.

Germany Puts On Hold Arms Sales To Saudi Arabia
DW: Angela Merkel puts on hold arms sales to Saudi Arabia
Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Germany will stop exporting weapons to Saudi Arabia, at least for the time being. The decision comes in the wake of the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at a Saudi consulate.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday that Germany would put arms exports to the kingdom on hold for the time being, given the unexplained circumstances of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death.
The chancellor said Riyadh had not put the full facts of Khashoggi's demise "on the table."
"First, we condemn this act in the strongest terms," she told a news conference after speaking to members of her Christian Democrat (CDU) party.

Saudi Arabia Has Stopped Doing Business With Germany Over Its Support To Save The Iran Nuclear Deal

Spiegel Online: Reception Grows Frosty for German Firms in Saudi Arabia
Detlef Daues is a pioneer of the German small- and medium-sized companies that have made Germany what it is today: a prosperous nation with good international relations that stretch to even the farthest-flung corners of the world.
His Hannover-based virtual department store for original replacement parts, V-Line GmbH, services customers in countries like Mexico, the United States, Qatar and Oman in addition to others in East Asia. But 65 percent of Daues' revenues come from Saudi Arabia.
But currently, the once-positive relationship between Saudi Arabia and Germany has worsened. Six months ago, Riyadh withdrew its ambassador from Germany and he still hasn't returned. There has been little open discussion of the reasons behind the conflict, but for people like Daues in the business community, the rift is as plain as day. "For Germans, the doors in Riyadh have suddenly been closed," says one experienced businessman in the Saudi capital. Meetings with delegations from Germany that were set up before the crisis are being canceled. "That hurts," says Oliver Oehms of the German-Saudi Arabian Liaison Office for Economic Affairs in Riyadh.

Update: Saudis Halt Orders From German Companies; Crown Prince "Deeply Offended" (Zero Hedge)
WNU Editor: German - Saudi trade is in the billions of dollars. But given the choice Germany has decided to side with Iran .... even openly condemning Saudi Arabia for spreading "political adventurism" in the Middle East. Is this smart diplomacy/politics/and strategy from German Chancellor Merkel's government .... definitely not. For the past year the media focus has been on Trump and the EU's opposition over his promise to walk away from the Iran deal .... but missing in this debate was/is the elephant in the room .... Saudi Arabia and its allies. The EU has forgotten that this group has enormous leverage because of the billions in trade that they are doing with the EU right now .... and they are starting to use it now because they see a national security threat from Iran. This is what supporters for preserving the nuclear deal are missing. They are going out their to say that there is no alternative to the deal .... but in their defense of the deal they are ignoring the views of other countries in the region .... especially those who are now at war with either Iran or its proxies (or both). The hope of the Obama administration when they agreed to the nuclear deal was that this would usher in a more stable Middle East with a less radical Iran. Unfortunately .... the lifting of sanctions and the infusion of billions of dollars to Iran has only given them the resources and the confidence to interfere in almost every nation in the Middle East. Iran may not have the bomb .... but their strategic goals and what they want to accomplish in the Middle East will cause destruction akin to the use of nuclear weapons. Case in point .... the persistent vow from Iran to completely exterminate the state of Israel is just one of many examples on why the current strategy of placating Iran and this nuclear deal is not going to work. Unfortunately .... placating Iran is what many governments and supporters of the nuclear deal want.

German's Defense Minister REFUSES To Wear A Hijab During An Official Visit To Saudi Arabia
The German minister voiced her annoyance at the expectation that women should wear traditional clothing when visiting the country
Daily Mail: Female German minister REFUSES to wear a hijab during visit to Saudi Arabia, days after Angela Merkel calls for a burka ban
* Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen wore a business suit for her meetings at the Divan Palace in Riyadh
* She was criticised on Twitter by Saudis for not wearing traditional Saudi clothing
* Von der Leyen said she was annoyed that visitors are expected to wear an abaya
* It comes a week after Angela Merkel called for the burka to be banned
* On Monday a Saudi woman was arrested for taking off her veil and posing for photographs
A German minister has refused to wear a hijab during a visit to Saudi Arabia - saying women should have the same right to choose their clothing as men.
Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen's stand came a week after Chancellor Angela Merkel called for the burka to be banned.
Von der Leyen was in Saudi capital Riyadh to meet deputy crown prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, where she voiced her annoyance at the expectation that women cover up.
But it sparked anger in the deeply-conservative state, where social media users called for her to be arrested.
It comes in a week when a Saudi woman was arrested for taking off her veil in public.

German Vice-Chancellor Accuses Saudi Arabia Of Funding Fundamentalist Mosques In The West

The Telegraph: German vice-chancellor accuses Saudi Arabia of funding Islamic extremism in the West
In a highly unusual moment of a Western politician attacking a critical Arab ally, Sigmar Gabriel says the time has come to make it clear to Riyadh the time of looking away is over.
The German vice-chancellor has publicly accused Saudi Arabia of financing Islamic extremism in the West and warned that it must stop.
Sigmar Gabriel said that the Saudi regime is funding extremist mosques and communities that pose a danger to public security.
“We have to make clear to the Saudis that the time of looking away is over,” Mr Gabriel told Bild am Sonntag newspaper in an interview.
“Wahhabi mosques all over the world are financed by Saudi Arabia. Many Islamists who are a threat to public safety come from these communities in Germany.”
The allegation that Saudi Arabia has funded mosques with links to Islamist terrorism in the West is not new. But it is highly unusual for a Western leader to speak out so directly against the West’s key Arab ally.
WNU Editor: If true .... why accuse Saudi Arabia .... just shut down the financial networks and expel those who are promoting Islamic extremism extremism. Talk about timing .... this all comes on the heels of Saudi Arabia offering to build 200 mosques in Germany in September .... Germany Government To Its Spy Agency: ' Criticism Of Saudi Arabia Not Allowed'

Berlin has rebuked its own foreign intelligence agency, the BND, for accusing Saudi Arabia of being a destabilizing influence in the Middle East. The Foreign Ministry insists the oil-rich kingdom is a key partner.
Berlin took the unusual step of criticizing its own foreign intelligence agency following a damning report that accused defense minister Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his father the king of having a destabilizing influence through increasingly aggressive military policies.
"The previous cautious diplomatic stance of older leaders within the royal family is being replaced by a new impulsive policy of intervention," the BND said, citing the kingdom's direct and indirect military involvement in conflicts in Syria, Lebanon, Bahrain, Iraq and Yemen.

Should Germany Sell Tanks to Saudi Arabia? -- Time
It's never easy to balance idealism with political realities, but as Germany grapples with the challenges posed by the Arab Spring it is sometimes hard to tell which side Berlin is on.
The capital's latest foreign-policy faux pas is an alleged behind-closed-doors deal to sell state-of-the-art tanks to Saudi Arabia. The deal — so secret the government won't even acknowledge it was ever discussed — has kicked up a firestorm of protest, uniting an unlikely coalition of leftist politicians, human-rights groups, church leaders and senior members of Chancellor Angela Merkel's own Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party.
