There Is A Race Between Global Superpowers To Build Data Centers

Zero Hedge: The CIA Sure Looks Busy

The rise of generative AI applications like ChatGPT, Midjourney or Bard already leads to increased demand in the world's data center network due to its sometimes hefty requirements for the underlying large language models.

This computing demand will only increase in the upcoming years, necessitating the building of new data centers and expanding the capacities of existing ones. As Statista's Florian Zandt shows in the following chart, based on 2022 data collected by commercial real estate company Cushman & Wakefield, the race between the global superpowers China and the United States also extends to data centers.

WNU Editor: At the beginning of the year I was asked the question on where should someone invest their money. I said that with the explosion of artificial intelligence, you will need massive data centers to accommodate this demand. I specifically pointed out Rexel, Avnet, Sonepar, Microsoft, Amazon, and L3 as good investments. I must confess that I was lucky with my advice. I never calculated the huge impact that intelligence agencies would have on data.

Germany's Security Agency Chief Says Russian Intelligence 'Methods Are Becoming Rougher And The Means More Brutal'

DW: Germany: Russian spy activity becomes 'more brutal'

A security agency chief has warned that Moscow has a "very complex intelligence interest in Germany." However, far-right extremism is the country's current "greatest threat," he said.

Russian intelligence is as active in Germany as it was "during the Cold War era," the head of Germany's domestic intelligence agency (BfV) said in comments published by the German Welt am Sonntag newspaper.

BfV leader Thomas Haldenwang said the Kremlin has a "very complex intelligence interest in Germany in almost all policy areas."

"We recognize that Russia has significantly increased its activity," Haldenwang told the Sunday newspaper. "So far, we have only known the level we have achieved in the meantime from the Cold War era."

Russian Spy Chief Says SolarWinds Cyberhack On US Government May Have Been Done By Western Agencies

Daily Mail: Moscow spy chief denies being behind Solar Winds hack of nine US federal agencies but says he's 'flattered' by the accusation

* SVR Director Sergei Naryshkin said 'these claims are like a bad detective novel'

* US and UK accused Russian spies of the 'highly-sophisticated' hack in December

* Software breach exposed US government departments and powerful companies

Russia's spy chief has denied responsibility for the SolarWinds cyber attack but admitted he was 'flattered' by the accusations from the US and Britain.

The hack, described by Microsoft as the 'most sophisticated cyber attack ever,' was uncovered in December - a breach of software company SolarWinds which exposed their numerous high value clients, including nine US government agencies and a raft of Wall Street's biggest firms.

Washington and London pointed the finger at Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), successor to the KGB.

The Business Of Providing Private Intelligence Is Booming For This Israeli Firm

Wall Street Journal: Black Cube: The Bumbling Spies of the ‘Private Mossad’

A secretive Israeli investigative firm employs aggressive tactics that sometimes blow up.

In 2017, a private investigator masquerading as an adviser to a wealthy Indian businessman blundered trying to dig up dirt on an outspoken Russia critic. An undercover operative unsuccessfully tried to prod a former Canadian judge to disparage Jews in the same year. Last year, agents were exposed engineering a smear effort against financier George Soros.

The would-be secret agents all worked for Black Cube, a private Israeli investigative firm often referred to in press reports as a “private Mossad.”

The firm has helped clients by covertly eliciting damaging information about competitors or legal opponents, among other things. But a number of its cases in recent years have been marred when flimsy cover stories were exposed by bumbling agents and risky tactics, according to a review of past cases and Black Cube internal documents, along with former employees, rivals, targets and clients.

In an interview, Efraim Halevy, a member of Black Cube’s advisory board, defended the firm’s use of fake identities, saying businesses need these tactics because “documents are becoming less prevalent” and the only evidence is “human sources.” He stressed that creating “virtual” situations to gain access and information have “to be done in a legal manner.”

Despite some missteps, Black Cube “has to turn clients away because it cannot service all the demands,” said Mr. Halevy, a former head of the Mossad, an Israeli government intelligence agency. He said Black Cube has worked on 300 cases since being founded in 2010 by two former Israeli military intelligence officers, Dan Zorella and Avi Yanus. He objected to the term “private Mossad,” arguing that the firm specializes in business rather than political espionage.

WNU Editor: This is a critical report from the WSJ on this Israeli firm. But even though WSJ points out their failings, it looks like this Israeli firm's business is booming. But to me the big winner by far in the world of providing private intelligence has got to be Christopher Steele's Orbis Business Intelligence, Ltd.. The fact that he was paid $10 million by a firm working for the Hillary Clinton campaign to produce a ridiculous Russian dossier that is false .... but was still used by former officials in the Obama officials to justify spying on then candidate Trump and later as President Trump .... proves to me how valuable these firms are to clients who want to damage their opposition.

Israeli Private Spy Company Wants To Influence American Elections

Adam Entous and Ronan Farrow, NYMag: Private Mossad for Hire

Inside an effort to influence American elections, starting with one small-town race.

One evening in 2016, a twenty-five-year-old community-college student named Alex Gutiérrez was waiting tables at La Piazza Ristorante Italiano, an upscale restaurant in Tulare, in California’s San Joaquin Valley. Gutiérrez spotted Yorai Benzeevi, a physician who ran the local hospital, sitting at a table with Parmod Kumar, a member of the hospital board. They seemed to be in a celebratory mood, drinking expensive bottles of wine and laughing. This irritated Gutiérrez. The kingpins, he thought with disgust.

Intelligence’s Three Big Problems In The Information Age

Zachery T. Brown (RCD): Librarians of Babel: Intelligence’s Three Big Problems in the Information Age

Summary

The U.S. Intelligence Community faces major challenges resulting from the information revolution. First, an exponential increase in the volume of data being generated threatens to overwhelm an already over-tasked collection and analytic structure. Secondly, the vast majority of useful information today is publicly-available, a fact the IC has struggled to come to terms with and that could obviate its classified collection model. Lastly, both of these problems contribute to a growing disengagement by the end-users of finished intelligence, American policymakers.

WNU Editor: Half of the world's population is now online .... More than half of global population now online: UN (AFP). With that many people online, and with intel agencies scooping up everything that they deem is important, to identify and find meaningful intelligence that can be useful in a very short period of time must be difficult and complex. And to then convince policy and decision makers on what is important .... doubly so. There is also the problem of having much of the world's data available for everyone to see (if they want to find it). So much for keeping secrets secret.

Who Paid For The Construction Of A Massive Signals Iintelligence Base Near Bejucal, Cuba

CCO

The Diplomat: Satellite Images: A (Worrying) Cuban Mystery

The new radome in Cuba is unprecedented. Who is behind it?

Satellite images from February and May 2018 show a newly constructed radome on the signals intelligence base near Bejucal, Cuba. Its protective dome and elevated mounting make it the first of its kind among the numerous long-standing sigint antennas at Bejucal, which have been used to intercept electronic communications from the United States.

The new steerable parabolic antenna and its spherical enclosure (together called a radome) were erected on a site adjacent to other known Cuban surveillance antennas south of Havana near the town of Bejucal between March 2017 and February 2018. The functions of the new antenna are not discernible from the current satellite images, but similar antennas have been employed for signals interception, missile tracking, satellite uplinks and downlinks, radio communications, tracking of objects in space, and in some cases to disrupt satellite communications. The radome, approximately 6-7 meters in diameter, sits atop a square building approximately 11-12 meters wide. If the antenna can be tilted to horizontal – a common capability – its elevated position could also enable direct communications with vessels at sea or other signal sources on the horizon.

Has There Been Inteligence Sharing Consequences Because Of Reports That President Trump Gave Russia Some Intel Secrets?

DW: Putin offers 'proof' that Trump didn't share sensitive information

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered to provide "proof" that Donald Trump did not share intelligence with Russian officials. Key US allies have said they will continue exchanging intelligence with Washington.

Putin on Wednesday told journalists he did not think Trump was being allowed to work properly and did not divulge secret information to Russian officials. He also cheekily added that he would provide "proof" of the latter statement - but only with the White House's approval.

The Russian president's comments came the same day officials in Jerusalem confirmed that Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a timely phone conversation that was apparently unrelated to recent reports that the US president had shared Israeli intelligence with Russian officials at the White House on May 10. Trump is headed to the Middle East next week and plans to visit Israel.

WNU Editor: DW is saying that there has been no consequences in sharing intelligence information .... and they quote in the above report Israeli and British officials. But I have a different point of view .... I believe there will be consequences (if not already). In President Obama's second term .... and now the beginning of the Trump Presidency .... there has been an avalanche of leaks .... NSA leaker Edward Snowden, the release of the CIA's toolkit on what the CIA is capable of doing on computer and communication networks, and now President Trump (leaks by him and those who are leaking about him). There are no secrets .... and in the case of the U.S. .... secrets that clearly have a very short life. As a blogger who is an information junkie and who aggregates the news .... I enjoy this. But I also know that there will be national security ramifications in the future .... and our enemies will exploit it. As to what will be exactly those national security ramifications .... only time will tell.

Did President Trump Breach Security Protocols When He Received News That North Korea Had Launched A Missile?

Washington Post: Trump turns Mar-a-Lago Club terrace into open-air situation room

It was Saturday night, and Palm Beach’s tony Mar-a-Lago Club was packed. There was a wedding reception in the ballroom. There was a full house for dinner on the terrace.

And at one table on the terrace, there was the president and the leader of a major U.S. ally, hashing out a national security problem in the open air.

“Someone opened up a laptop, and at the table . . . a group of Japanese people stood around the prime minister and Donald, and they were all looking at the laptop,” said Jay Weitzman, a member of President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club and founder of the Pennsylvania-based parking management company Park America. He was sitting three tables away from Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday evening.

“Whoa,” Weitzman remembered thinking. “What’s going on?”

“Turns out, it was a missile launch,” he said Monday.

Western Spy Agencies Cannot Track 'Lone-Wolf' Terror Attacks

Reuters: Spy agencies struggle to spot threats from lone, mentally ill attackers

Recent attacks on civilians in the U.S. and Europe have exposed a gap in the intelligence community’s efforts to track suspected extremists and prevent mass killings, a half dozen American, British and French counterterrorism officials told Reuters.

The attacks have a common theme of being carried out by actors with an apparent history of mental illness - but few if any direct links to extremist groups, the officials told Reuters.

From both a legal and a strategic perspective, counterterrorism investigators globally are focused on plots by established violent groups with known ideologies, such as Islamic State. In the U.S., laws designed to protect citizens from intrusive government spying can limit investigations of individuals unless they have provable ties to foreign terror groups.

Politico: Sub sailor's photo case draws comparisons to Clinton emails

A Navy sailor entered a guilty plea Friday in a classified information mishandling case that critics charge illustrates a double standard between the treatment of low-ranking government employees and top officials like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and ex-CIA Director David Petraeus.

Prosecutors allege that Petty Officer First Class Kristian Saucier used a cellphone camera to take photos in the classified engine room of the nuclear submarine where he worked as a mechanic, the USS Alexandria, then destroyed a laptop, camera and memory card after learning he was under investigation.

Divisions In Israeli Intelligence

Shay Hershkovitz, War On The Rocks: Israel's Intelligence Wars

On January 12, the spokesman of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) announced the resignation of Brig. Gen. Eli Ben-Meir as head of the Research Division due to differences of opinion with the chief of the Israeli Military Intelligence Directorate, Maj. Gen. Herzi Halevi. According to several prominent Israeli media channels, the dispute revolved around disagreement on the way the Research Division should be managed — along with personal differences between the two senior officers. Such a situation is extremely rare, especially since Ben-Meir was assigned to his position only a year ago — the term usually lasts three or four years.

Rare as it is, this event is a good opportunity to examine one of the most intriguing anomalies among intelligence agencies in the Western world. Unlike in the United States, where the body responsible for the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) is the Office of the Director of National Intelligence — a civilian organ — the responsible official in Israel is a military officer. With recent dramatic changes in Israel’s intelligence community leadership, it will be interesting to see if there will be changes to Israel’s national assessment structure and practice.

Was The Paris Attacks A Result of A Massive Failure In Western Intelligence?

WSJ: Paris Attacks Show U.S., Allies Misjudged Islamic State

No longer a regional threat, ISIS demonstrates a long and deadly reach

The Paris terror attacks suggest that the U.S. and its allies overestimated recent successes against Islamic State while underestimating the group’s ability to strike far from its Middle East stronghold, according to U.S. lawmakers, analysts and former senior intelligence officials.

Islamic State now challenges Western intelligence agencies and policy makers not as a growing regional threat, but as a terrorist group with a long and deadly reach, despite a U.S.-led military campaign in Syria and Iraq.

“With an enemy that has developed a proto-state in the heart of the Middle East with such proximity to Europe and so many foreign fighters, including those from Europe, it is just really a matter of time before something like this happens even with good, or even great, intelligence,” said Hank Crumpton, a former Central Intelligence Agency official.

WNU Editor: A few hours before the Paris attacks President Obama said that ISIS was contained .... President Obama A Few Hours Before Today's Terror Attacks: ' We Have Contained ISIS'. When you say that they are contained and then this attack happens .... it does not take much to realize that maybe the intelligence the President is receiving is wrong.

Russian Intelligence Is Playing A Key Role In Putin's Foreign Policy Strategy

Russian President Putin At Russia's FSB Agency

US News and World Report: Russia's Valuable Weapon

Vladimir Putin's spies are critical to his strategy in Syria and Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is a former KGB spymaster. Since he became president in 2000, Russia has invaded Georgia, retaken Crimea from Ukraine, supported separatists fighting the Ukraine government and is now taking military action in Syria to bolster the brutal regime of Bashar Assad and to counter advances from the Islamic State group. How important is Russian intelligence to Putin's global adventures?

To find out, U.S. News contributor Thomas K. Grose recently talked to British historian Jonathan Haslam, currently a professor at Princeton's School of Historical Studies, and author of the newly published book "Near and Distant Neighbors: A New History of Soviet Intelligence." Excerpts:

WNU Editor: Russian intelligence makes mistakes .... and some of them are big ones. Case in point .... the fall of the Soviet Union comes to mind. But the West should not underestimate Russian intelligence .... they have a President that has unleashed them to pursue his foreign policy. On the U.S. side .... the exact opposite .... with many key intelligence operations now being done with a legal committee behind them.

Who Killed The 20th Century’s Greatest Spy?

The Guardian: Who killed the 20th century’s greatest spy?

When Ashraf Marwan fell to his death from the balcony of a London flat, he took his secrets with him. Was he working for Egypt or Israel? And did the revelation of his identity lead to his murder?

This much is certain: Ashraf Marwan, a man some describe as the 20th century’s greatest spy, was alive when he tumbled from the fifth-floor balcony of his £4.4m London flat. The Egyptian businessman landed, shortly after 1.30pm on 27 June 2007, in the private rose garden at number 24 Carlton House Terrace, a street whose former occupants include three prime ministers (Palmerston, Earl Grey and Gladstone) and which lies a few hundred metres from Piccadilly Circus. Overhead, the lunchtime sky was obnoxious with helicopters, swarming above Tony Blair’s Teflon-plated convoy as it carried the prime minister to Buckingham Palace, where he would hand in his resignation. A woman screamed. Someone called the police. The paramedics arrived too late. Marwan died from a ruptured aorta.

The details of the final minutes of Marwan’s life are much more opaque. Not that there weren’t witnesses: on the morning of his death, four men were meeting on the third floor of an adjacent building, 116 Pall Mall, in a room with a clear view of Marwan’s balcony. In a curious twist, these men – József Répási, Essam Shawki, Michael Parkhurst and John Roberts – worked for one of Marwan’s companies, Ubichem PLC; they were waiting for their boss to join them. He was late. When they called around midday to find out why, he assured the group that he would be with them shortly.

WNU Editor: I do not know if he is the 20th century's greatest spy .... but his case has raised a lot of questions. The above video is from a 50 minutes report 6 years ago

Top U.S. Intelligence Chief: NSA Leaker Edward Snowden Killed 'Important' Intelligence Gathering Program In Afghanistan

The Hill: Spy chief: Snowden killed 'important' spy program in Afghanistan

Edward Snowden’s disclosures about American spy powers directly led to the end of a critical program in Afghanistan, the nation’s top spy said on Wednesday.

By forcing the end of the program that recorded practically every cellphone call in the country — as well as scuttling other efforts — Snowden “has done untold damage” to U.S. intelligence, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said.

“Terrorists, particularly, have gone to school on the revelations caused by Snowden,” Clapper said at the Intelligence and National Security Summit.

Military Spy Chief: Have To Assume Russia Knows U.S. Secrets -- CNN

Washington (CNN) -- In the world of military strategy, every contingency must be examined, especially the worst-case scenario.

Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, made that clear when he told National Public Radio in an interview broadcast Friday how U.S. officials must plan for the possibility that Vladimir Putin's Russia has access to American battle plans and other secrets possibly taken by classified leaker Edward Snowden.

"If I'm concerned about anything, I'm concerned about defense capabilities that he may have stolen from where he worked, and does that knowledge then get into the hands of our adversaries — in this case, of course, Russia," Flynn said of the former National Security Agency contractor who fled to Moscow to seek asylum.
