Business Insider: 2 of Asia's biggest militaries are working on a deal that could give them an edge over China

* India and Japan are expected to continue discussing a logistics deal during a summit later this month.
* The deal would allow both of their militaries to access bases and logistical support from the other.
* Both India and Japan have sought to counter China's growing influence in the Indian Ocean region.

A meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe later this month may yield more progress on a deal that would allow their armed forces to share military facilities.

The proposed agreement, likely to be discussed during the 13th India-Japan summit in Tokyo on October 28 and October 29, would increase their security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region by allowing the reciprocal exchange of supplies and logistical support, according to the Deccan Herald.

A Japan - India Military Alliance To Counter China?

India, Japan Pledge to Boost Strategic, Political Ties -- Voice of America

NEW DELHI — The Japanese and Indian prime ministers have expressed their commitment to boost strategic and political ties. The Japanese leader visited New Delhi as the friendship between the two countries gains momentum to counter China’s growing assertiveness in the region.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe watched a display of India’s military strength and cultural diversity at Republic Day celebrations in the Indian capital Sunday. He is the first Japanese leader to be the chief guest at the annual ceremony, to which New Delhi traditionally invites countries it is cultivating.

A day earlier, the two countries pledged to strengthen ties after the Japanese prime minister held talks with Indian leaders.

Tokyo boosts military ties with New Delhi amid escalation in tensions with Beijing following PM Shinzo Abe's visit to Yasukuni war shrine

Japan yesterday pressed ahead with a two-pronged effort to counter China, forging closer military ties with India as Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida set off to court Spain and France.

The moves come amid rising tensions over the disputed sovereignty of a set of uninhabited islands, and Chinese fury at Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's recent visit to the Yasukuni war shrine.

Japan and India expanded air force ties before Abe visits New Delhi in a few weeks, bolstering relations two months after China declared an air-defence identification zone over the disputed maritime area.

India, Japan Boost Defence Ties -- The Diplomat

China’s growing assertiveness in the region is prompting increasingly wary Japan and India to boost defence cooperation.

The most visible example of this is the first ever Indo-Japan army-to-army staff-level talks that concluded recently. The Indian Army currently holds such talks with nine countries, including Australia and Malaysia (there had in fact been a defence co-operation process between Delhi and Beijing, but this appears to have been placed on hold by an indignant India following Beijing’s recent refusal to grant a visa to an Indian general).
