Washington Times: Push to rename Senate office building for McCain fizzles: 'We are left with a monument to bigotry'

Richard Russell survived another scare.

The segregationist Democrat’s name continues to adorn the Senate’s oldest office building, despite promises by top senators that this would be the year they finally erased it and replaced it with the name of their newly departed colleague Sen. John McCain.

“Nothing will overcome the loss of Senator McCain, but so that generations remember him I will be introducing a resolution to rename the Russell building after him,” Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said on Twitter just after McCain’s office announced his death.

Four months later, the resolution was never introduced.

Mr. Schumer’s spokesman clammed up when asked what happened.

But McCain knew that would not be the headline from the grand service, whose many details he personally oversaw. This was to be no mere laying to rest of a Washington wise man, nor just another funeral of an elder statesman whose passing would be marked by flowery words about the end of an era. It was a meeting of the Resistance, under vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows.

* NATO, the world's most powerful military alliance, is considering naming its new billion-dollar headquarters in honor of the late Sen. John McCain.
* McCain made frequent visits to NATO member countries throughout his political career and frequently criticized Russia's maligned activities to undermine the alliance. He also voiced disappointment with President Donald Trump's handling of the U.S. relationship with NATO.
* He died Saturday after a year-long fight with brain cancer. He was 81.

NATO, the world's most powerful military alliance, is considering naming its new, billion-dollar headquarters in Brussels in honor of the late Sen. John McCain.

The proposal from British Parliament member Tom Tugendhat would be "considered carefully," NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu said in a statement. "The Secretary-General has tremendous respect for Senator John McCain," she added.

President Donald Trump and former John McCain presidential running mate Sarah Palin are not invited to memorial services for the iconic Arizona senator, multiple sources tell PEOPLE.

“Two names you won’t see on the guest list: Trump and Palin,” says a Capitol Hill source with knowledge of funeral plans for McCain, who died of brain cancer Saturday at age 81.

“Invitations were not extended” to the two political figures, confirms Carla Eudy, a fundraiser who has worked with and been friends with the McCain family for decades.

Remembering John McCain

WNU Editor: I learned about John McCain's death at a sports bar/restaurant in Kingston, Ontario last night. And it was fitting that I learned about it with my two visiting cousins from Russia (ex-military .... albeit Soviet) and two followers of WNU who are ex-U.S. military who wanted to meet me on our short road-trip. Senator McCain's military career was (and is) incredible, and his passing away last night opened up my cousins to talk about their war experiences (in Afghanistan), as well as the Iraq experiences of my American friends. That is the legacy of the man. Not his political career and two failed Presidential bids .... which will be just footnotes in history. What he will be remembered for is his military career .... and more specifically his strength as a human being to survive five and a half years as a POW in a North Vietnamese prison camp. But for now .... in the coming days the politicians and the media will present a political narrative that is completely opposite to how they treated him when he was a political opponent. And when they are finished, they will forget about John McCain forever. But one thing that I learned last night is that soldiers will not forget who and what John McCain was .... for them John McCain will be remembered forever.

Politico: Hatch to McCain: Invite Trump to your funeral

Sen. John McCain should reconsider his wish that President Donald Trump not attend McCain's funeral, said Sen. Orrin Hatch, the most senior GOP senator.

McCain prefers instead that Vice President Mike Pence attend his funeral rather than Trump, who has mocked McCain for being tortured and attacked him for voting against Obamacare repeal. But Hatch said he thought keeping the president from his funeral was too much: "I think it's ridiculous."

"Well, he's the president of the United States and he's a very good man. But it's up to [McCain]. I think John should have his own wishes fulfilled with regard to who attends the funeral," said the Utah senator. Asked whether McCain should change his mind about Trump, Hatch said: "I would."

Hatch said he does not expect McCain, who is battling brain cancer, to return to the Senate.

WASHINGTON — People close to Sen. John McCain have told the White House that the ailing Arizona Republican does not want President Donald Trump to attend his funeral and would like Vice President Mike Pence to come instead, a source close to McCain confirmed to NBC News.

McCain, 81, has been battling an aggressive form of brain cancer for nearly a year and is back home in Arizona after he underwent surgery last month for an intestinal infection.

The senator, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, said in an audio excerpt this week of his forthcoming memoir, "I don't know how much longer I'll be here," according to a clip aired by NPR.

L.A. Times: John McCain was tortured as a POW in Vietnam. Will he help sink CIA nominee implicated in torture program?

Activists seeking to derail President Trump's nomination of Gina Haspel to lead the CIA are looking to Sen. John McCain to cast the deciding vote against her — assuming he is well enough to return to Washington.

The 81-year-old Republican was diagnosed with brain cancer in July and last cast a vote in the Senate on early December before he returned home to Arizona for treatment. He underwent surgery in Phoenix for an intestinal infection on April 15.

Haspel's critics are counting on McCain to speak out against her nomination, even if he can't cast a vote on the Senate floor, cementing his legacy as the country's most prominent critic of torture as he faces the twilight of his career.

"Sen. McCain is essential," said Matt Hawthorne, policy director for the National Religious Campaign Against Torture. "He has more moral leadership on the issue of torture than anyone."

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has made it pretty clear that he's no fan of President Trump; he delivered a whole speech that attacked Trump's worldview and seemed to knock Trump for receiving Vietnam War deferments for bone spurs. But McCain's comments about Trump on Sunday may be his most severe.

In a statement, McCain indirectly blamed Trump for the chemical weapons attack in Syria, suggesting that Trump's recent comments about U.S. troops leaving Syria “very soon” and his noninterventionist approach have “emboldened” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“President Trump last week signaled to the world that the United States would prematurely withdraw from Syria,” McCain said. “Bashar Assad and his Russian and Iranian backers have heard him, and emboldened by American inaction, Assad has reportedly launched another chemical attack against innocent men, women and children, this time in Douma.”

Sen. John McCain left the nation’s capital Sunday to spend Christmas in Arizona with his family as he battles brain cancer, giving his Republican Party one less vote as it is expected this week to attempt to push through a contentious tax bill along party lines.

President Trump told reporters Sunday that McCain (R-Ariz.) and his wife, Cindy McCain, have “headed back [to Arizona], but I understand he’ll come if we ever needed his help, which hopefully we won’t.” He added: “But the word is John will come back if we need his vote. It’s too bad. He’s going through a very tough time, there’s no question about it. But he will come back if we need his vote.”

Trump said he spoke to Cindy McCain by phone Sunday. “I wished her well. I wish John well,” he said.

The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee is playing hardball with the Pentagon when it comes to acquisition programs that end up billions of dollars over budget or deliver years late.

In a hearing before the committee Thursday, Sen. John McCain took to task Ellen Lord, the new under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics, for recent examples of acquisition malpractice, including the Army's Future Combat Systems and the USS Gerald S. Ford, the first of the Navy's new class of supercarriers.

FCS was canceled in 2009 after six years of work and more than $6 billion in taxpayer investment; the Ford was delivered earlier this year, more than $2 billion over budget and 15 months later than expected.

McCain said he asked Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson who was responsible for cost overruns and was told Richardson didn't know.

President Donald Trump, frustrated that the U.S. is "losing" in Afghanistan, is considering replacing the American military commander leading the campaign, according to a report.

According to NBC News, the president during a July 19 meeting "repeatedly suggested" to his military advisors that they should replace Army Gen. John Nicholson, the current top U.S. commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan. It cited senior administration officials.

Previously, Nicholson requested the administration increase the number of U.S. soldiers fighting the battle against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Nicholson formally assumed command of the U.S. forces in Afghanistan in March 2016.

VOA: McCain Again Takes on Trump Administration, Will Offer Afghan War Strategy

U.S. Senator John McCain was back in Arizona on Monday to begin treatment for brain cancer, but his situation did not stop him from again slamming the Trump administration for having "no strategy for success in Afghanistan" more than six months after the presidential inauguration.

"When the Senate takes up the National Defense Authorization Act in September, I will offer an amendment based on the advice of some our best military leaders that will provide a strategy for success in achieving America's national interests in Afghanistan," McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement released Monday.

CNN: Sen. John McCain has brain cancer, aggressive tumor surgically removed

(CNN)Sen. John McCain, 80, has been diagnosed with a primary glioblastoma, a type of brain tumor, Mayo Clinic doctors directly involved in the senator's care told CNN exclusively. The doctors spoke directly to CNN Chief Medical Correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

The senator underwent surgery to remove a blood clot on Friday at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix. Lab results from that surgery confirmed the presence of brain cancer associated with the blood clot.

Glioblastoma is a particularly aggressive tumor that forms in the tissue of the brain and spinal cord, according to the American Brain Tumor Association.

* Surgeons performed a craniotomy with an eyebrow incision to remove it
* The clot was discovered during a routine physical, which he received often because of bouts of melanoma
* McCain had invasive melanoma on his left temple in 2000 just inches from where the clot was
* The clot could have been caused by the melanoma, but it also could have been caused by a number of other things including a stroke, a fall or blood thinners
* If it was caused by a fall or blood thinners it could have been why McCain appeared so confused in June when he was questioning James Comey

Senator John McCain was hospitalized Friday after a routine physical discovered a blood clot just behind his left eye.

The 80-year-old Arizona politician had a 5cm clot removed via a minimally invasive craniotomy with an eyebrow incision.

Though the surgery itself was not considered to be too intrusive, McCain's medical history and bouts of melanoma suggests that the clot could be the sign of a much more serious problem.

And after the Senator's confused questioning of ex-FBI head James Comey in June, a number of people have expressed concern for McCain's mental health and are wondering if the clot could have been affecting him in that way.

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a leading Russia hawk, during his interviews for an upcoming Showtime interview special, saying, "I like Senator McCain ... And I’m not joking."

McCain is one of the leaders of the Republican charge to increase sanctions against Russia over election tampering.

Putin makes the comments in newly released clips from "The Putin Interviews," a multi-night special featuring film director Oliver Stone interviewing the man McCain has called a "murderer and a thug who seeks to undermine American national security interests at every turn."
