The 15 Wildest Military Prototypes From Russian Arms Maker Kalashnikov

Business Insider: The 15 wildest military prototypes from AK-47 maker Kalashnikov — from the flashy, to the bizarre, to the totally implausible

Russian arms manufacturer Kalashnikov, founded in 1807, supplied weapons to Russia's imperial tsars and still equips the Russian army today.

Though it is most famous for the AK-47 rifle, the company — whose full name is Kalashnikov Concern — has expanded into a global arms manufacturer for 27 countries.

But some of their latest prototypes appear downright bizarre and have been widely mocked by experts.

There is no hard evidence to suggest that these prototypes are in use yet or fit for purpose. Leonid Bershidsky, a Bloomberg opinion writer, said most Kalashnikov prototypes are just for show.

Take a look at 15 of the company's bizarre new prototypes below — from personal aircrafts to desert buggies with machine guns mounted on top.

Russian Military Has A New Deadly Assault Rifle: The AK-309

Mark Episkopos, National Interest: Meet Russia's New Deadly Assault Rifle: The AK-308

But Putin won't be placing any orders anytime soon.

Russian weapons manufacturer Kalashnikov Concern has unveiled their new AK-308 assault rifle at the “Army 2018” expo in Moscow.

At first glance, the AK-308 appears to be a rebrand of Kalashnikov’s AK-12 with some design elements from the AK-103. But its tame appearance belies what makes the AK-308 one of Kalashnikov’s most ambitious products in decades: it houses 7.62x51mm NATO rounds.

Since the Second World War, Kalashnikov has produced over twenty assault rifles. Of these, all but three have employed Soviet/Russian-made ammunition. The AK-101 and AK-102 with 5.56x45mm NATO rounds were Kalashnikov’s first foray into exporting a rifle with NATO-standard ammunition, but these made a small international splash.

Kalashnikov Concern may be known for its ubiquitous and durable AK-47 assault rifle, but the Russian defense contractor’s been cooking up some other exciting weaponry and vehicles in recent months. A slick new handgun! A pop-up riot shield! Toy guns, even!

But the most exciting futuristic murder gadget on the legendary weapons manufacturer’s radar might be its BAS-01G Soratnik “Comrade-in-Arms,” an autonomous unmanned combat vehicle designed to tear assholes every which way — at least, according to a new sizzle reel published on March 6.

Russian Arms Companies Are Facing New U.S. Sanctions

DW: Kalashnikov stays tight-lipped ahead of new US sanctions

New American sanctions are set to hit the Russian weapons industry. But during a press tour to the home of the famous AK-47 rifle, questions about sanctions were met with defiance – and silence.

Traditional Urdmurt plaid dresses, a log cabin in the snow, and lots of potatoes. It's not what I had expected of the Russian Foreign Ministry's press tour of the Kalashnikov factory. The tour to the industrial city of Izhevsk, the capital of the Urdmurt Republic in the Western Urals, promised a rare glimpse of the company known for its AK-47.

But first, the handful of foreign journalists on the tour was treated to an unexpected lesson about Urdmurt culture — including a performance by former Russian Eurovision contestants Buratovskyie Babushki. They sang renditions of famous pop songs in Urdmurt, the local language of the republic.

It’s as Russian as borscht, but the AK-47 will soon be made in Florida.

The weapon of choice for guerrillas, terrorists and the soldiers of armies around the world, some 100 million AK-47s have been made in Russia since it rolled off the line in 1947. But now, the company’s U.S. arm is planning to manufacture the gun at a plant in Pompano Beach, Fla.

“An iconic firearms platform, revered the world over, with a history of intrigue and controversy, now reborn as the new American Kalashnikov,” the company said in a statement.

Kalashnikov Has A New Brand And A New Development Strategy For It's Famed Rifle

The AK-47 Softens Its Image -- Jason Karaian, The Atlantic

A rebranding promotes the world-famous killing machine as a "weapon of peace"

One of the most recognizable instruments of war is getting a makeover. Kalashnikov Concern, the company behind the ubiquitous AK-47 assault rife, unveiled a new corporate identity at a high-profile event in Moscow yesterday. A more stylized logo for the parent company was revealed, along with a somewhat Orwellian new marketing slogan—"promoting peace."

In the original Russian, the new corporate catchphrase can translate to "weapons of peace," an even more curious construction. The parent company’s military weapons unit, dubbed simply Kalashnikov, also got a new logo, one that, according to The Guardian, "looks more like the logo of a supermarket or chemist chain than that of an internationally renowned killing machine."

AK-47 Inventor Mikhail Kalashnikov Wrote Repentant Letter Before His Death On The Weapon That He Created

'Am I Guilty?' AK-47 Maker's Near-Death Torment -- RT

In the last years of his life, Mikhail Kalashnikov, the famous Russian weapon designer, anguished over his responsibility for the millions of deaths his inventions caused, his published letter to the head of the Russian Church reveals.

In his public interviews Kalashnikov, who died last month at the age of 94, insisted that he created the AK-47 assault rifle and dozens of other firearms as a means to protect his country, and rejected responsibility for killings perpetrated by militants and terrorists using his weapons.

But, apparently, as he was approaching the end of his life doubts lingered in his mind. Kalashnikov, who found faith in his final years, shared the burden in a letter to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, which was published on Monday by the Izvestia newspaper.

“My soul ache is unbearable and has one irresolvable question: if my rifle took lives, does it mean that I, Mikhail Kalashnikov, aged 93, a peasant woman’s son, an Orthodox Christian in faith, is guilty of those people’s deaths, even if they were enemies?” the leaked letter reads.

My Comment: The road to hell is paved with good intentions .... a quote that Mikhail Kalashnikov can probably relate to. After-all .... he designed the AK-47 to defend the Soviet Union .... and I am sure that he never thought that it would eventually become the weapon of choice for most of the world's armies, rebel groups, and terror organizations.

I have always preferred the AK-47. On a sad note .... I now live in Canada where the AK-47 is banned .... but I will confess that when I go back to the old country .... I have always made a point of visiting the firing range with my cousins.
