CNBC: Russia threatens military response to any NATO action over nuclear-ready missile

* NATO has said Russia’s SSC-8 missile violates terms of a 1987 missile treaty.
* The alliance has said it will act to mitigate the Russian threat.
* Russia has in turn said it would take “countervailing military measures.”

Moscow has said it will take “countervailing military measures” should NATO fulfil any threat related to Russia’s nuclear-ready cruise missile system.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Tuesday that Russia must dismantle the short-range system, or the alliance will be forced to respond, adding that NATO-member defense ministers would now look at next steps “in the event that Russia does not comply.”

No detail is yet known over what NATO might do although Stoltenberg said the alliance would not engage in any arms race.

David French, NRO: Don’t Believe Claims that Trump ‘Botched’ the Yemen Raid

On Twitter, many journalists are rapidly reaching the point of maximum credulity — they’ll immediately believe virtually anything negative about Donald Trump, not matter how thinly-sourced or implausible. Take the kerfuffle that erupted last night in response to this Reuters report where unnamed defense officials blamed the losses in last weekend’s Yemen raid on, you guessed it, Trump:

U.S. military officials told Reuters that Trump approved his first covert counterterrorism operation without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup preparations.

As a result, three officials said, the attacking SEAL team found itself dropping onto a reinforced al Qaeda base defended by landmines, snipers, and a larger than expected contingent of heavily armed Islamist extremists.

Mark Thomson, Time: Why Trump Is Interviewing Generals for His Cabinet

The benefit of their experience may be offset by a military-centric foreign policy.

Many of the latest administration try-outs turnstiling through Trump Tower over the three weeks since Donald Trump’s election couldn’t be blamed for rendering sharp salutes to the soon-to-be command-in-chief. After all, that’s what they did during their decades in uniform.

Trump has tapped Michael Flynn, a combative and cagey retired Army three-star who ran the Defense Intelligence Agency, to serve as his national security adviser. Other retired generals who have spoken with Trump about serving in his Administration include Jack Keane (retired Army general), who said he turned down an offer to serve as defense secretary. James Mattis (retired Marine general) remains a leading candidate for that post. David Petraeus (retired Army general) is under consideration to serve as secretary of state, and John Kelly (retired Marine general) could be tapped as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

CNN: Inside Kremlin's creeping military campaign in Syria

Hmeymim airbase, Latakia, Syria (CNN)Russians are renowned for their endless patience -- and I sometimes feel they like to test us foreigners whenever they can.

Certainly our journey into Syria with the Russian defense ministry was testing: Seven hours on a bus to a military airport outside Moscow, three hours going through security, then six hours on a Soviet-era Tupolev passenger jet to Syria.

It was 4 a.m. when we finally touched down, bleary-eyed, at the Hmeymin Air Base in Latakia on northwest Syria's Mediterranean coast, the staging ground for Russia's air war against Islamist terror groups fighting for control of Syria.

The U.S. is now preparing to boost its Special Forces presence in Syria to help warplanes identify high value jihadist targets. The move in part would be in response to Russia’s recent military intervention in the region

Daily Mail: U.S. could send Special Forces to find high-value Syrian terror targets in significant ramping up of the war against ISIS

* America is now preparing to boost its Special Forces presence in Syria
* The move comes after Russia’s recent military intervention in the region
* New ‘boots on the ground’ will help identify jihadist targets on the frontline
* Military officials also examining plans to send Apache helicopters to Iraq

America is preparing to boost its Special Forces presence in Syria to help warplanes identify high value jihadist targets.

The Pentagon is looking to deploy Green Berets or other special operations forces inside the country in a significant ramping up of the war against Islamic State.

The move in part would be in response to Russia’s military intervention in the region which critics have claimed left the US looking ineffectual.

Bill Sweetman, Daily Beast: The Pentagon is On Course for Fiscal Disaster

The U.S. military is planning on spending megabucks on a slew of new weapons systems—with no obvious way to pay for them.

If the Pentagon was a family, the parents would be buying new cars every other year and eating out three times a week while blithely planning to put all five kids through Harvard. This is sometimes called the “bow wave” in defense circles, but that’s a euphemism for fiscal misfeasance.

Military Preps for Hurricane Irene -- Military.com

Hurricane Irene is bearing down on the east coast, and the U.S. military is taking steps to ensure warfighting assets are out of Mother Nature's way. The Navy is moving ships out to sea and prepping aircraft to move inland, and the Air Force has already evacuated aircraft from at least one vulnerable North Carolina base. At the same time all services are warning members and families to prepare for the worst.

Gates Says NATO Could Face 'Irrelevance' In The Future -- Voice of America

American Defense Secretary Robert Gates has told NATO members that they need to do more -- and spend more -- to support the alliance.

ROBERT GATES: "The blunt reality is that there will be dwindling appetite and patience in the US Congress -- and in the American body politic writ large -- to expend increasingly precious funds on behalf of nations that are apparently unwilling to devote the necessary resources or make the necessary changes to be serious and capable partners in their own defense.”

WASHINGTON -- The United States and Russia should agree to exchange data about their respective tactical nuclear arsenals in Europe as a step toward hastening the process of removing the weapons, a new report urges.

The two former Cold War adversaries have taken unilateral action to reduce these arms stocks on the continent, amid warnings that nuclear weapons as small as torpedoes or gravity bombs are difficult to track and might pose a serious risk of terrorist theft or unauthorized use.
