Is Pakistan Making Progress In Countering Terrorism?
Michael Kugelman, War On The Rocks: Progress and Peril in North Waziristan
Last month, I had a rare opportunity to visit North Waziristan, a Pakistani tribal region blessed with rugged beauty, yet cursed with a long history of conflict. Long a haven for terrorists, both local and foreign, it’s been described as the most dangerous place on earth.
My visit was eye-opening — but it also raised some unsettling questions. There were clear signs that Pakistan has made progress in countering terrorism in North Waziristan, but also good reason to believe that a less positive picture lay beyond the small area I saw. Moreover, Pakistan’s efforts in the region cannot be designated an unqualified success, given its lack of decisive action against certain terror groups, particularly the Haqqani Network. I also was struck by how easily the progress made could be squandered, thanks to the enduring presence and appeal of extremism around the country. Ultimately, the North Waziristan counterterrorism campaign highlights the broader disagreements between the United States and Pakistan over the latter’s support for militants, a divide that has widened with the Trump administration’s threats to Pakistan over its ties to terrorists.

But it is true that terror incidents have decreased in Paksitan this past year .... and heh .... they felt that at least this part of the country was safe enough for an American reporter to be giving a tour, albeit probably under heavy protection.

Pakistan Launches Ground Offensive Against Militants
Reuters: Ground battles flare as Pakistan pushes new offensive against militants
Pakistani troops pushed deeper into militant-held areas in the North Waziristan region on Friday, launching a ground offensive against the Pakistani Taliban and other Islamist fighters in their last strongholds near the Afghan border.
Since May, the military has stepped up operations in the deeply forested ravines of the Shawal valley, which straddles the regions of North and South Waziristan along the frontier with Afghanistan, and is dotted with militant bases.
Pakistani troops began pushing deeper into Shawal after days of aerial bombing that the army said killed dozens of militants.
"Ground operation in Shawal, North Waziristan begins," the army's chief spokesman, Major General Asim Sali Bajwa, announced on Twitter late Thursday night.

Four Militants Hanged In Pakistan As Execution Campaign Widens -- Reuters
(Reuters) - Pakistan hanged four Islamist militants on Sunday in the second set of executions since the government lifted a moratorium after the Taliban massacred 132 children and nine others at a school last week.
None of those hanged has anything to do with Tuesday's school rampage in Peshawar, and some Pakistani commentators have said the executions are intended to divert attention from the failure to satisfy public demands to find the killers.

Pakistan Army Launches A Ground Offensive Against The Taliban Near The Afghan border
Pakistan Launches Ground Offensive in North Waziristan -- Voice of America
Pakistan's military says it has begun a ground offensive against terrorist hideouts in North Waziristan, following two weeks of aerial bombing and evacuation of civilians from the region. The northwestern tribal territory bordering Afghanistan has long been a source of domestic and international terrorist activities.
After evacuation of “all civilian population,” the army says its troops and commandos have started a “house-to-house search” in and around Miranshah, the administrative center of North Waziristan.
The army says the initial ground offensive has killed 15 “terrorists” and found tunnels and bomb-making factories.

Mass Exodus Underway As Pakistani Continues It's Military Operations In North Waziristan
Pakistan Army Waziristan Offensive: 350,000 Displaced -- BBC
Some 350,000 people have been displaced since the start of an army offensive against militants in Pakistan's North Waziristan a week ago, officials say.
Long lines of buses and lorries are reported waiting in intense heat for security clearance to enter the nearest town of Bannu.
There are fears the refugees could spread polio, as many of the displaced children have not been vaccinated.
The offensive began after a deadly attack on Karachi airport.
The attack was claimed by an Uzbek militant group and the Pakistani Taliban.

Pakistan Launches A Major Offensive That Aims To 'Finish Off' Militants In North Waziristan
Major Pakistan Offensive Aims To 'Finish Off' Militants In North Waziristan -- CNN
(CNN) -- Pakistan on Sunday launched a military operation in a restive province near the border with Afghanistan in an attempt to "finish off" militants in the area "once and for all," Defense Minister Khawaja Asif told CNN.
Asif said the operation, which included airstrikes early Sunday, was the government's second option, but negotiations with the Pakistani Taliban failed.
On Monday, the Pakistani Taliban issued a statement calling on all foreign-run businesses, international airline companies and multinational companies to "wrap up their affairs (and) leave Pakistan immediately."
The statement was issued by spokesman Shahidullah Shahid in response to the military's operation.

More Violence Erupts Near Pakistan's Busiest Airport; Taliban Vows 'Full-Out War' -- CNN
(CNN) -- For the second time in two days, Pakistan's largest and busiest airport was forced to shut down after militants launched a brazen attack on airport security forces.
Tuesday's assault targeted the Airport Security Forces camp near Karachi's Jinnah International Airport, the airport's manager told CNN's Saima Mohsin.
It was not immediately clear how the militants were carrying out their attack or how many casualties may have resulted. At least 30 ambulances rushed to the scene, Mohsin said.
Once again, the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility.
"This wave of attacks will be continuing in retaliation for the shelling and atrocities of the government," spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said by phone from an undisclosed location.

Pakistan Is Poised To Launch Major Military Operations In North Waziristan
Pakistan Plans Military Operation In North Waziristan, Targeting Extremist Groups -- Washington Post
The Pakistani government is on the verge of launching a major military offensive in the North Waziristan tribal region following a series of brutal Taliban attacks in recent weeks and the apparent failure of peace talks with the militants, according to a senior Pakistani official.
“It could be any day,” said the official, who added that military plans have been shared with top U.S. officials who have long urged an offensive.
Planning for the operation comes amid a Pakistan-requested pause in U.S. drone strikes now entering its third month — the longest period without an attack in more than two years — and a series of high-level U.S.-Pakistan meetings.
Pakistan’s defense secretary, Asif Yasin Malik, is currently heading a delegation of security officials in Washington. CIA Director John Brennan quietly visited Pakistan last week, days after Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, head of the U.S. Central Command, held meetings at military headquarters in Rawalpindi.

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least 606 people were killed and over 1,000 others injured in a total of 41 suicide attacks carried out by 51 suicide bombers in Pakistan in 2011, an official report said on Sunday.
According to a report issued by the Pakistan's Conflict Monitoring Center (CMC), among all the killed in such attacks, 358 people or 59 percent were innocent civilians and the number of innocent people injured in these attacks accounted for 85 percent, or 856 people out of the total 1,002.

What The Execution Of 15 Kidnapped Pakistani Soldiers Means -- Christian Science Monitor
In an apparent surprise to the Pakistan military, insurgents executed 15 soldiers who had been recently kidnapped – a blow to talks between the government and the Pakistani Taliban.
Islamist militants killed 15 captive soldiers Thursday in an attack, dealing a blow for tentative peace talks between the government and the Pakistani Taliban.
The Pakistani Frontier Constabulary forces, based in North Waziristan, were captured on Dec. 23 and executed in retaliation for the recent death of one of their commanders, according to a Taliban spokesman. Tribesmen found the bodies Thursday morning, as officials expressed surprise that negotiations had gone awry.

Militant Attacks In Pakistan Killed 6,681 In 2011
A total of 2,782 militant, insurgent and sectarian related-terrorist's attacks were reported across the country in 2011 in which around 6,681 people were killed.
The figure was taken after counting casualties caused by terrorist attacks, military operations, inter-tribal clashes and cross-border attacks (including drone strikes and incursions by Nato/ISAF forces in FATA) in Pakistan.
In comparison with corresponding year 2010, militant, insurgent and sectarian related attacks showed a considerable decline, as around 611 less attacks and 3,322 less deaths were reported in the out-going year.

Militants Are Now In Complete Control Of Nortwest Pakistan
If U.S. policy makers need proof of how little control Pakistan has over its strategic border region with Afghanistan, all they need to do is watch videos available on YouTube of militants believed to be terrorizing the streets of North Warizistan.
Armed men in black with balaclavas freely roam the streets of one of the biggest towns in North Waziristan, where the United States wants Pakistan's military to launch an offensive against militant groups.
There are no signs of security forces as the men belonging to a militant hit squad created to hunt suspected U.S. spies throw a man into a station wagon and pin him down.
Nervous bystanders keep their distance. Another man looks horrified as militants haul him off a pick up truck. Both are shown in another video being blown up by explosives placed at their feet.

My Comment: In view of these videos, Pakistan's army chief Ashfaq Kayani's reaction to this damning evidence is hysterical.

Why Pakistan Is Starting To Unravel
KARACHI, Pakistan — A trash-strewn dusty street here became a front line in recent ethnic battles that killed 100 people in four days.
Now, in the aftermath, residents speak of the street as though it is a chasm, dividing the population of this oceanside city of 18 million and even Pakistan itself.
On one side, people known as Mohajirs, long the dominant group in this economic hub, seethingly point to bullet-scarred and burned houses and demand a new province that would be theirs alone. On the other side, Pashtuns who migrated here in recent years after fleeing an Islamist insurgency in their native northwest also point to bullet holes, and some express worry that a sort of ethnic cleansing is to come.
My Comment: We in the West perceive Pakistan as one big unified Islamic country .... that is further from the truth. Pakistan is in fact a federation with diverse ethnic and sectarian groups. And while using Islam as a common thread to keep these ethnic groups unified has been successful since independence, it is now starting to unravel. If you want a better understanding of Pakistan .... this is a must read post for you.
