Russian Defense Radar, Missiles Worry U.S. Officials -- Washington Examiner

Russia deploying new missile defense radar while seeking curbs on U.S. defenses

Russia’s military has completed work on a new missile defense radar in southern Russia that has some U.S. military officials worried Moscow is building up offensive and defensive strategic forces in destabilizing combination.

The large radar station near Armavir, located near the Black Sea and designed to detect missiles launched from Europe and Iran, is nearly complete, said U.S. officials.

The radar deployment comes as Russia is seeking legal restrictions on U.S. and NATO missile defenses in Europe that are designed to protect the continent and the United States from long-range Iranian missiles.

Update: Russia Builds Missile Defense It Would Deny U.S. -- IBD Editorial

My Comment: More info on Russia's radar deployment plans can be read here. As to what is my take on these developments .... Russia has always wanted some form of missile defense while trying their best to deny the U.S. in having one of their own. With this Russia radar development moving forward, I would say that they are accomplishing their goals successfully and with a willing U.S. administration.

Russia’s Radar To Counter Missile Shield, Says Medvedev -- RIA Novosti

The launch of a new anti-missile radar station in the Russian Baltic Sea region of Kaliningrad should be treated by the West as the “first signal” of Russia’s readiness to counter “threats” posed by NATO’s missile defense plans, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Tuesday.

The radar, which is capable of monitoring missile launches from the North Atlantic, as well as the United States’ future European missile shield, was put into operation earlier during the day. A source in the Russian Defense Ministry earlier said that the radar will go on combat duty starting December 1.

Does Russia Have A Missile Defense Program?

Russia Able To Shoot Down North Korean Missiles - Air Force -- RIA Novosti

BALASHIKHA, April 9 (RIA Novosti) - Russian air-defense systems deployed in the Far East are capable of shooting down missiles of the type recently launched by North Korea, the Air Force chief of staff said on Thursday.

Pyongyang on Sunday launched a multistage rocket that it said was carrying a communications satellite, defying pressure from the United States, Japan, South Korea and other countries, which suspect the launch was a cover for the test of a Taepodong-2 long-range missile.

"Russia's air defenses in the Far East are capable of shooting down missiles of the type launched by North Korea. As to the recent launch, our radars monitored the missile flight for about 15-20 seconds," Lt. Gen. Vadim Volkovitsky said.
