Sudan Bombs Darfur Rebels – And Civilians – Amid Calls For A 'No-Fly' Zone. -- Christian Science Monitor

A Dutch journalist and photographer traveled with rebel forces in Darfur in February. They were pinned down by government forces for weeks, before escaping across the border into Chad.

Karoya Laban, Sudan - Ache Ali has lost four children and a husband.

A Sudanese cattle herder, she rides on a donkey cart with her youngest child, a daughter, wedged between hundreds of other fleeing Sudanese, herds of bleating goats, and other livestock.

"They [the children] ran away three days ago when our village, Buhera, was bombed." she calls out over the din, hoping for some help.

Oil's Decline Threatens Sudan Government -- L.A. Times

Officials, who have used petrodollars to solve their political problems, may not be able to quell public anger over a troubled economy.

Reporting from Khartoum, Sudan -- Ask a Sudanese citizen what troubles him these days and he might not even mention Darfur or the International Criminal Court arrest warrant against the president.

To many here, it's the economy that is keeping them up nights.

Sudan's once-hard-charging economy, a source of national pride over the last five years, is in danger of grinding to a halt because of plummeting oil prices.

With the nation's oil-dependent budget in tatters, government employees are facing pay cuts. Newly opened luxury hotels are slashing rates. Even supermarkets are feeling the pinch.

Sudan’s President Issues a Warning -- New York Times

EL FASHER, Sudan (AP) — President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan threatened on Sunday to kick out more aid groups and expel diplomats and peacekeepers on his first trip to Darfur since the International Criminal Court ordered his arrest on charges of war crimes.

Sudan has already expelled 13 of the largest aid groups operating in Darfur in defiant response to the warrant issued last week by the court in The Hague.

The Sudanese Army announced Sunday that it was mobilizing three-quarters of its troops, preparing for full alert, according to the Sudan Media Center, a news agency closely linked to the government.
