France 24: Global terror deaths lowest since 2009: report

Heavy losses for jihadist and militant groups in Syria and Iraq fuelled a 33-percent drop in global terror attacks in 2018, with fatalities falling to a 10-year low, defence analyst Jane's said Wednesday.

The downswing in attacks led to civilian fatalities falling by more than a quarter, according to the annual Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre (JTIC) Global Attack Index released by business information provider IHS Markit.

"Over the course of 2018 JTIC recorded a worldwide total of 15,321 attacks by non-state armed groups, which resulted in a total of 13,483 non-militant fatalities", said Matthew Henman, head of JTIC.

Islamic State 'Ramadan Attacks' Target France, Tunisia, and Kuwait

NBC: Tunisia, France, Kuwait Attacks Follow ISIS Call for Ramadan 'Month of Disaster'

Terrorists launched horrific attacks across three continents Friday, killing dozens of people just days after ISIS urged supporters to unleash "a month of disaster" during the Muslim holy period of Ramadan.

A man was decapitated in an apparent Islamist attack on a U.S.-owned gas factory in southeastern France, while 25 worshipers were killed and 200 wounded during Friday prayers at a Shi'ite mosque in Kuwait.

In Tunisia, gunmen sparked panic at a beach resort, opening fire and killing more than 27 people, including some tourists. Bodies were seen lying on the sand and on sunlongers.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in Kuwait, but there were no immediate claims of responsibility for the others.

Reuters: Terror attacks, deaths up sharply in 2014: State Department

Terrorist attacks worldwide surged by more than a third and fatalities soared by 81 percent in 2014, a year that also saw Islamic State eclipse al Qaeda as the leading jihadist militant group, the U.S. State Department said on Friday.

In its annual report on terrorism, the department also charts an unprecedented flow of foreign fighters to Syria, often lured by Islamic State's use of social media and drawn from diverse social backgrounds.

Taken together, the trends point to a sobering challenge from militant groups worldwide to the United States and its allies despite severe blows inflicted on al Qaeda, author of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in Washington and New York.

Last Year, 10,999 Terrorist Attacks Worldwide – A Decline From 2008 -- Christian Science Monitor

The frequency of international terrorist attacks has dropped in recent years, but a State Department report also finds that more Western-reared individuals are hearing the siren of radical Islam.

The frequency and deadliness of international terrorist attacks continue to drop, but Al Qaeda and Islamist extremism remain an adaptable and convert-recruiting foe – as witnessed by the growing number of cases of home-grown Muslim radicals.

Those are among the findings of “Country Reports on Terrorism,” the State Department’s annual report on international terrorist activity.
