France has been struck by two terror attacks within hours of each other as three people were killed - two of them beheaded - in an attack inside a cathedral in Nice before a gunman was shot dead by police in Avignon. 

The first attack began around 9am at the Notre Dame cathedral in Nice where a knifeman beheaded an elderly female parishioner and a male church warden, fatally stabbed a second woman, wounded several others, and was then shot and arrested by police. 

Two hours later, a gunman threatened people on the streets of Avignon - 120 miles from Nice - while shouting 'Allahu Akbar' before he was fatally shot by police.

Two people have died and 12 have been injured after a gunman opened fire with an automatic handgun close to a Christmas market in Strasbourg, French authorities have said.

Six of the 12 people were seriously wounded in the attack, 'three of four' of whom may have life-threatening injuries, according to town mayor Roland Ries.

The shooting took place close to the historic Christmas market in Strasbourg's central square Place Kleber.

Police have announced they know the identity of the gunman, who has a criminal record and was a designated 'threat to the state' on a security services watchlist.

He fled the scene after a shootout with police, having previously been wounded by a soldier close to the scene. He is understood to have been cornered by police in the Neudorf district.

It follows a series of Islamic State and Al Qaeda attacks in France which has seen almost 250 killed by terrorists since early 2015..

Following tonight's attack, an investigating source said: 'A 29-year-old man died after being stabbed by an assailant close to the Opera House.

Reuters: Paris gunman's criminal past in focus as police hunt second suspect

The man who shot dead a French policeman in an Islamist militant attack had served time for armed assaults on law enforcement officers, police sources said on Friday, as authorities sought a second suspect flagged by Belgian security services.

The gunman, identified as Karim Cheurfi, opened fire on a police vehicle parked on the Champs Elysees in Paris late on Thursday, killing one officer and injuring two others before being shot dead.

The attack overshadowed the last day of campaigning for Sunday's presidential election first round, bringing raw issues surrounding Islamist militancy to the fore.

Two police officers were shot dead by a pair of Kalashnikov-wielding gunmen on the Champs Elysees in central Paris tonight.

BBC: France foiling terror plots 'daily' - Prime Minister Manuel Valls

The French prime minister has said the country's security services are foiling terror plots and dismantling militant networks "every day".

Manuel Valls said about 15,000 people were being monitored for radicalisation as the country continues its drive against jihadist militants.

Previously the authorities said about 10,000 were identified as high-risk.

A boy of 15 was arrested at his home in Paris on Saturday on suspicion of planning an attack over the weekend.

Investigators said he had been under surveillance since April and he had been in touch with a French member of so-called Islamic State (IS), Rachid Kassim.

Reuters: Arrested French women, directed by Islamic State, planned Paris attack

Three French women arrested after a car loaded with gas cylinders was found near Notre Dame cathedral were planning to attack a Paris railway station under the direction of Islamic State, French officials said on Friday.

The Peugeot 607 was found early on Sunday laden with seven gas cylinders and three jerry cans of diesel, said police, adding that no detonators were discovered.

"A terrorist cell ...has been dismantled," Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins told a news conference.

"The transition to action by these young women, who were directed by individuals within the ranks of Islamic State in Syria, shows that this organization wants to create female fighters."

The 'radicalised' owner of a car found packed with gas cylinders close to Notre Dame cathedral has been arrested, police have revealed.

The vehicle, a Peugeot 607 without a licence plate, was found with its hazard lights flashing close to the landmark building in the heart of the French capital.

Documents with writing in Arabic were also found in the car.

Police say the car's owner, who is now in custody, is on an intelligence services watchlist of people suspected of religious radicalisation.

One of the two ISIS knifemen who stormed a church to behead a French priest was a convicted terrorist and was meant to be living with his parents with an electronic tag.

The pair took the 86-year-old priest, two nuns and two parishioners hostage at the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray near Rouen in Normandy during morning mass at 9.45am, killing the priest and critically injuring another hostage.

An 86-year-old priest has been 'beheaded' by two ISIS knifemen who cut his throat after bursting into a French church and taking nuns and worshippers hostage before being shot dead by police.

Five people including the priest, two nuns and two parishioners were held by assailants who raided the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray near Rouen in Normandy at 9am.

The clergyman, named as Jacques Hamel, is believed to have been beheaded during the attack while another hostage is 'hovering between life and death' in hospital.

The local authorities in Nice have refused a request by French anti-terror police to destroy CCTV images of last week's lorry attack.

The Paris prosecutor's office said the request had been made to avoid the "uncontrolled dissemination" of images.

But officials in Nice have responded by filing a legal document, arguing the footage could constitute evidence.

It is the latest evidence of a growing dispute between the local and national authorities in the wake of the attack.

Nice truck attacker Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel received logistical support for his Bastille Day attack from five suspects who are now in custody, French prosecutor Francois Molins has said.
Mr Molins told a news conference the crime had been planned for months.

He said one of the suspects had filmed the scene of the attack the day after.

All five are facing preliminary terrorism charges for their alleged roles in helping Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a Tunisian living in Nice.

French Intelligence Knows Who Ordered The Paris Attacks Last Year But Is Keeping That Intel Secret

VICE News: France knows who masterminded the Paris attacks — but won't say who it was

Abdelhamid Abaaoud, long considered the mastermind behind the November 13 attacks that killed 130 in Paris, merely coordinated rather than masterminded the rampage, according to France's head of external security.

Speaking to a closed-door parliamentary inquiry on May 24, Bernard Bajolet said that security services were aware of who had ordered the attacks, but that they would "stay discreet on that point." So discreet, in fact, that it is unclear whether the suspected mastermind is even alive.

"We now have a good knowledge of the organizational chart and of the way in which the so-called Islamic State — which is not a state, and is even less Islamic — is organized," Bajolet told the commission. "We have made progress in these areas, we therefore have an idea of the identity of the commander."

Bajolet's testimony to the commission in charge of the inquiry was made public Tuesday.

New York Times: ISIS Claims Responsibility for Attack in Nice, France

NICE, France — The Islamic State claimed responsibility on Saturday for the Bastille Day attack on the seaside promenade in Nice, France, which killed 84 people and injured 202.

“The man behind the running-over operation in Nice, France, is a soldier from the Islamic State, and he carried out the attack to answer the calls for targeting the nationals of countries in the coalition that is fighting Islamic State,” said a statement from a social media account linked to the Amaq News Agency, which bills itself as the terrorist network’s semiofficial news outlet.

Also on Saturday, the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist communications, said that the Islamic State had featured its claim of responsibility in a news bulletin on its radio station, Al Bayan, and that it “threatened that ‘crusader states’ are not safe.”

HEAT STREET EXCLUSIVE – A French government committee has heard testimony, suppressed by the French government at the time and not released to the media, that the killers in the Bataclan tortured their victims on the second floor of the club.

Police witnesses in Parliament said they vomited when they saw the disfigured bodies.

Wahhabist killers apparently gouged out eyes, castrated victims, and shoved their testicles in their mouths. They may also have disemboweled some poor souls. Women were stabbed in the genitals – and all the torture was, victims told police, filmed for Daesh or Islamic State propaganda. For that reason, medics did not release the bodies of torture victims to the families, investigators said.

But prosecutors claimed these reports of torture were “a rumor” on the grounds that sharp knives were not found at the scene. They also claimed that maybe shrapnel had caused the injuries.
