Islamist Terror Plot Foiled At Last Second By German Police

@ Copyright: Bundespolizei

BBC: German police arrest 10 people on suspicion of planning Islamist attack

Police in Germany have arrested 10 people on suspicion of planning an Islamist attack.

The arrests were made after some 200 police officers carried out raids in the states of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate.

The men had plotted to "kill as many 'non-believers' as possible" using a vehicle and guns, prosecutors said.

A 21-year-old man from Offenbach, near Frankfurt, and two 31-year-old brothers from Wiesbaden are the main suspects.

"They had already made contact with different arms dealers, rented a large vehicle and collected financial assets to use for the purchase of guns and the execution of the planned murders," a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office said.

The suspects are aged between 20 and 42 and several are German nationals, the spokeswoman added.

Gift-Wrapped Roadblocks Now Protect German Christmas Markets

© Ruptly

DW: German Christmas markets: City protects pedestrians with gift-wrapped car barricades

Cities across Germany are boosting security for Christmas market season, following the deadly truck rampage in Berlin last year. The city of Bochum put out massive car barricades – and then giftwrapped them.

Bochum authorities placed a string of 1.2 ton pellet bags in the downtown area to avert potential terror attacks ahead of the seasonal opening of the local Christmas market.

On Thursday morning, however, the bags took on a holiday look, with the city's official marketing service turning them into novelty Christmas presents.

"For us it was very important to fit in those ugly barriers into the beautiful overall atmosphere," said the head of Bochum Marketing Mario Schiefelbein.

Terror Attack Against A German Soccer Team?

New York Times: Explosions Hit Borussia Dortmund’s Bus in Germany, Wounding a Player

BERLIN — As many as three explosions damaged the bus of one of Germany’s most storied soccer teams as it headed to its stadium in Dortmund on Tuesday, wounding one player and forcing postponement of the match, an important playoff in a major European championship.

The Dortmund police chief, Gregor Lange, said at a late-night news conference that “we assume it was a targeted attack” on the Borussia Dortmund team. The wounded player, Marc Bartra of Spain, was undergoing surgery on his right wrist, a spokesman for the team said.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, Borussia Dortmund’s chief executive, said that “three explosive devices” had detonated near a hotel outside Dortmund where the players were staying.

The state prosecutor told reporters that a letter claiming responsibility had been discovered near the site of the blasts, but that it was too soon to say if it was genuine. The prosecutor, Sandra Lücke, declined to answer further questions about the letter’s contents, including what language it was written in.

Massive Manhunt For Suspect In Berlin Terror Attack

New York Times: Germany Seeks Tunisian in Connection With Berlin Christmas Market Attack

BERLIN — A young Tunisian who was denied asylum in Germany and was considered a potential security risk was being sought across Europe on Wednesday, as the authorities pursued the attacker who plowed into a Berlin Christmas market on Monday.

The attack killed 12 people and wounded 48, 12 of whom remain in serious condition. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the assault, one of Germany’s deadliest acts of terrorism in decades.

A European arrest warrant identified the Tunisian as Anis Amri, 23, and said he had a history of providing false names and nationalities and should be considered armed and dangerous. German news agencies reported that the man had ties to Abu Walaa, a 32-year-old Iraqi Salafist who was arrested in Germany last month and accused of recruiting would-be jihadists to fight for the Islamic State. A reward of 100,000 euros, or about $104,000, was offered for information leading to his arrest.

Suspect In Berlin Terror Attack Released. German Capital On High Alert

Washington Post: Berlin on high alert as suspect search resumes in Christmas market attack

BERLIN — The German capital was on high alert Tuesday with one or more suspects still at large in the deadly truck assault on a Christmas market, an act Chancellor Angela Merkel decried as a presumed “terror attack.”

The only suspect, a Pakistani asylum seeker taken into custody shortly after Monday’s bloodshed, was released by police late Tuesday because of insufficient evidence. It left police scrambling for fresh leads in the assault that left 12 dead and 52 injured after a truck carrying a payload of steel careened into festive stalls and fairgoers in Berlin.

German police accelerated efforts to study forensic evidence, including analysis of blood stains within the cabin of the truck — turned into a weapon in a tactic used just five months earlier in a similar holiday rampage on the French coast.

German Police Claim Munich Shooting Was Not Inspired From Islamist Militancy

Reuters: Munich gunman fixated on mass killing, had no Islamist ties

A German-Iranian teenager who shot dead nine people in Munich was a deranged lone gunman obsessed with mass killings who drew no inspiration from Islamist militancy, police said on Saturday.

The 18-year-old, born and raised locally, opened fire near a busy shopping mall on Friday evening, triggering a lockdown in the Bavarian state capital.

Seven of his victims were themselves teenagers, who police said he may have lured to their deaths via a hacked Facebook account on what was the fifth anniversary of twin attacks by Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik that killed 77 people.

The Munich shooting, in which a further 27 people were wounded, some seriously, was the third act of violence against civilians in Western Europe - and the second in southern Germany - in eight days.

Reuters: Most Germans fear terrorist attack after train ax assault: poll

More than three-quarters of Germans believe their country will soon be the target of terrorism, a survey showed on Friday, after a 17-year-old asylum-seeker wounded passengers on a train in an ax attack claimed by Islamic State.

Seventy-seven percent expect an attack to happen soon, up from 69 percent two weeks ago, according to the survey compiled by Forschungsgruppe Wahlen for broadcaster ZDF.

Bavarian police shot dead the teenager after he wounded four people from Hong Kong on the train and injured a local resident while fleeing.

Islamic State Is Claiming Its First Terror Attack In Germany

Daily Mail: Revealed: Afghan refugee, 17, had been with his German foster family for TWO WEEKS before he went on axe rampage on a train after being 'self-radicalised' and making a hand-made ISIS flag

* Attacker went on the rampage on a train near Wurzburg targeting 15 people

Germany's security situation is "very serious" amid the Islamic State group's threat to attack the country, the head of the domestic intelligence agency (BfV) told a Sunday newspaper, according to Reuters. Hans-Georg Maassen reportedly said that despite concerns, authorities are still unaware of the militant group's plot to strike.

New York Times: Terrorism Suspects Are Posing as Refugees, Germany Says

BERLIN — An Algerian couple, suspected of planning a terrorist attack in Berlin and arrested on suspicion of belonging to the Islamic State, entered Germany late last year and applied for asylum as Syrian refugees — part of a pattern of terrorism suspects entering Europe under the guise of fleeing war, the German authorities said Friday.

The police in Berlin published a photo they said was of the husband, showing a bearded man with his face blacked out, pointing a pistol at the camera, with two Kalashnikov rifles propped up beside him on a sofa strewn with other weapons. The photo was believed to have been taken in Syria, where German media reports said the man had received terrorist training with the Islamic State.

The Cancellation Of Last Week’s Germany-Netherlands Football Match In Hanover Was Due To A French Intel Warning Of An Impeding Bomb Attack

The Guardian: Terrorists 'planned to detonate three bombs inside German stadium'

Security official says tip-off from French led to last-minute cancellation of last week’s Germany-Netherlands football friendly in Hanover.

Terrorists planned to detonate three bombs inside the stadium during a friendly international football match in Hanover last week, an attack that was thwarted by cancelling the match at the last minute, according to a security official.

The official told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung that German security agents were tipped off by French counterparts that a terror cell planned to detonate five bombs in Hanover, including three inside the football stadium, one at a bus stop and one at a railway station.

The match, due to be attended by the chancellor, Angela Merkel, and several government ministers, was called off and the stadium quickly evacuated 90 minutes before kick-off on Tuesday night. No specific details of the terrorist threat have emerged until now.

WNU Editor: The details on why this soccer match was cancelled have not been disclosed by German officials, but apparently they are looking for "suspects".
