Suicide Bombing Kills 50 In Nigeria

CSM: Nigeria experiences worst bombing of the year in former Boko Haram territory

Despite government assurances that Boko Haram is nearly defeated within Nigeria, a recent suicide bombing that killed 50 people has been attributed to the Islamist militant group.

Yola, Nigeria—A suicide bomber killed at least 50 people at a mosque in northeastern Nigeria on Tuesday, the biggest mass killing this year in a region facing an insurgency by Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

Bayi Muhammad, a worshipper at the mosque in Mubi, said he only escaped the blast because he was late for early morning prayers.

The government and military have said numerous times since 2015 that Boko Haram's eight-year insurgency is almost defeated but the group continues to attack civilian and military targets.

Tuesday's bombing brings the number killed in 2017 to at least 278, according to calculations by Reuters. There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.

Abubakar Othman, a police spokesman in Adamawa state, said the death toll is at least 50 but "there could be more as those seriously injured could add to the figure."

Nigeria Rocked By Bomb Blasts

Nigeria's Gombe And Bauchi Cities Hit By Blasts -- BBC

At least 26 people have been killed in bombings in two major cities in northern Nigeria, emergency workers and witnesses say.

The first blast at bus rank in Gombe killed at least 20 while another six died in an explosion at a market in Bauchi, they added.

Militant Islamist group Boko Haram is waging an insurgency in the area.

Meanwhile, a video purportedly released by the group shows dozens of people being executed at a school dormitory.

They were made to lay face down before being shot dead.

There is no independent confirmation that Boko Haram produced the video. It is unclear where or when it was shot.

(Reuters) - At least 82 people were killed on Wednesday in two bombings in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna targeting opposition leader and former president Muhammadu Buhari at a busy market and a moderate Muslim cleric about to lead a crowd in prayer.

The deadlier blast targeted Buhari's convoy at the crowded Kawo market, his son told Reuters on the scene. A Red Cross official said at least 50 people were killed there.

Scores Of Students Killed From An Islamist Attack On A Nigerian School

'Dozens Dead' In School Attack In Nigeria's Yobe State -- BBC

At least 29 pupils and a teacher have been killed in a pre-dawn attack by suspected Islamists on a school in northeastern Nigeria, reports say.

Eyewitnesses said some of the victims were burned alive in the attack, in Mamudo town, Yobe state.

Dozens of schools have been burned in attacks by Islamists since 2010.

Yobe is one of three states where President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in May, sending thousands of troops to the area.

A reporter from the Associated Press found chaotic scenes at the hospital in nearby Potiskum, where traumatised parents struggled to identify their children among the charred bodies and gunshot victims.

Why Are Hezbollah Terror Cells Setting Up In Nigeria?

Nigeria: Hezbollah Armoury Discovered In Kano City -- BBC

An armoury belonging to the Lebanese group Hezbollah has been discovered in northern Nigeria, the West African nation's army and spy agency has said.

Three Lebanese nationals have been arrested, an army spokesman, Brig Gen Ilyasu Isa Abba, said.

Nigeria's State Security Service said they were intended for use against "Israeli and Western interests".
