Scores Killed In Crimea College Terror Bomb Attack

BBC: Kerch blast: Crimea college bomb attack kills 18

At least 18 people have been killed and dozens more wounded in an explosion at a college in Russian-annexed Crimea.

Officials said an "unidentified explosive device" detonated at the technical college in Kerch, where Russia has built a bridge between the peninsula and Russia.

Initial reports had suggested that the blast was some sort of gas explosion.

But a Russian national guard official said the incident was a deliberate "terrorist act".

Sergei Melikov said the explosion had been caused by an improvised explosive device.

National guard units had reached the scene of the "act of terrorism"' he told Interfax.

Reuters: Russian metro bomb suspect a Muslim born in central Asia: investigators

A Russian suicide bomber originally from mainly Muslim Kyrgyzstan detonated the explosives in a St Petersburg train carriage that killed 14 people and wounded 50, authorities said on Tuesday.

The suspect had radical Islamist links, Russian media cited law enforcement officials as saying, raising the possibility Monday's attack could have been inspired by Islamic State, which has not struck a major city in Russia before. So far, no-one has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Kyrgyz officials identified the suspect as Akbarzhon Jalilov, born in the city of Osh in 1995, and Russian officials confirmed his identity, saying he had also left a bomb found at another metro station before it went off.

Terror Attack In Southern Russia Results In All 3 Attackers Blowing Themselves Up

Reuters: Three men blow themselves up outside police station in southern Russia

Three men blew themselves up outside a rural police station in southern Russia on Monday after trying to gain entry to the building as part of an unsuccessful attack, Russian investigators said in a statement.

The attack took place in Novoselitskoe, a village in Russia's Stavropol region close to the volatile North Caucasus area, where Islamist militants intent on carving out a breakaway caliphate have targeted policemen in a series of car bombings and shootings.

"As a result of the blasts the police station and some cars nearby suffered some damage," Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement. "No local people or police were hurt."

Investigators said they had identified the suicide bombers, men from another village in the area with previous convictions, including for murder. Their names suggested they were originally from the majority-Muslim North Caucasus region.

WNU Editor: This is a surprise. Attacks in the Stavropol region -- close to the Muslim-majority North Caucasus -- are rare. This could be a one-off, or a trend that non-Muslim regions of Russia are now "fair-game" for Islamic militants.

ISIS Inspired Terror Attack Foiled In Moscow

The Guardian: Russian police foil 'terror attack' on Moscow after making arrests in city

A group of people said to be planning an attack on Moscow have been taken into custody, anti-terrorism forces said, and 4kg of explosives seized

Russian authorities claimed to have foiled a major terrorist plot on Monday, allegedly planned by men trained at Islamic State camps in Syria and aimed at Moscow’s busy public transport system.

Information about the alleged terrorists remained murky on Monday evening. An official statement from the FSB said only that a raid had taken place on an apartment where between six and 11 people lived, “some of whom have been through combat training in Islamic State camps in Syria.” The FSB said they were all Russian citizens.

After Today's Attack In Grozny, Russian Security Forces Have Been Put On 'High-Alert' In Moscow

Russian Military On Alert In Moscow, Grozny Amid New Crisis -- News.com.au

RUSSIAN authorities say gunmen travelling in several cars killed at least three traffic police officers at a checkpoint in the capital of the restive North Caucasus republic of Chechnya.

Although unrest is common in Russia’s North Caucasus, forceful security measures adopted by iron-fisted Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov have spared the city of Grozny of significant violence for several years.

Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports Moscow has closed its airspace to all civilian traffic.

Reports on Twitter state there are fighter jets overhead as military helicopters cris-cross the city.

Russian media state President Vladmir Putin rushed to the Kremlin at 1.15am local time in response to reports of the outbreak of violence.

Earlier reports mentioned that Moscow had ordered the closure of all civilian flights in its airspace .... but according to Flight Aware, there are flights entering and leaving Moscow right now. Why Did Terror Groups In The Caucasus Fail In Delivering Their Promise Of A Terror Attack Duing The Olympics

In central Volgograd, Russian Cossacks look at portraits of people suspected of involvement in terrorist acts.

Why Did The North Caucasus Insurgency Fail To Attack Sochi Winter Olympics? -- Radio Free Europe

The two suicide bombings on consecutive days in late December targeting public transportation in Volgograd compounded existing fears both in Russia and abroad that the North Caucasus insurgency posed a major security threat to the Winter Olympic Games to be held in Sochi in February. Self-styled Caucasus Emirate leader Doku Umarov had called on his fighters in an appeal posted online last July to use “any methods Allah allows” to prevent the Games from taking place.

The Sochi Olympics have now ended without any such bloodbath, despite the threat of “surprises” for those attending the Games by two men identified as the Volgograd suicide bombers in video footage posted on the Daghestan insurgency website on January 19.

My Comment: The crisis in Ukraine has distracted me from publishing this post earlier .... but it is true .... for all their bravado and threats the terror groups from the Caucasus did not succeed in launching a terror attack on the Sochi Olympics as they had promised. I guess there is a good reason for this .... but I will take the good news when I can.

Putin Visits victims of Volgograd blasts While Vowing To 'Annihilate Terrorists' After Suicide Bombings

Putin Vows To Annihilate 'Terrorists' After Suicide Bombings -- Reuters

(Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday vowed to annihilate all "terrorists" following two deadly bomb attacks in the southern Russian city of Volgograd that raised security fears ahead of the Winter Olympics.

The uncompromising remarks in a televised New Year address were Putin's first public comments since suicide bombers killed at least 34 people in attacks less than 24 hours apart on a railway station and a trolleybus on Sunday and Monday.

But after two decades of violence in the North Caucasus, Islamist militants continue to pose a threat beyond their home region. Russia's Olympic Committee chief said no more could be done to safeguard the Games since every measure possible was already in place around Sochi, beneath the Caucasus mountains.

Russian Suicide Bus Bombing Caught On Dash Cam

Russian Suicide Bus Bombing Caught on Dash Cam -- ABC News

Dashboard camera video captured a deadly bus explosion in Russia Monday that local authorities said was the work of a female suicide bomber, according to international reports.

The brief video, aired on Russian television, shows a city bus in Volgograd, formerly known as Stalingrad, traveling normally down a highway before suddenly exploding from the inside out. The bus disappears in a cloud of smoke and debris until it is seen a few seconds later, further down the road, stopped on the side. People then stream out of the bus and start running away.

Russian authorities said seven people were killed, including the bomber, and more than two dozen others injured. The bomber has been identified by the Russian Investigative Committee as 30-year-old Naida Asiyalova, from the Russian republic of Dagestan.

Russia Says Foils Plot To Attack Chemical Arms Facility -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Russian authorities said on Tuesday they had foiled a plot by Islamist radicals to bomb a chemical weapons facility and had arrested two suspects from the North Caucasus, where Moscow is battling an Islamist insurgency.

Militants have previously carried out deadly bombings in Moscow and other parts of Russia outside the mostly Muslim North Caucasus, but specific allegations of plots to attack sites holding weapons of mass destruction in nuclear-armed Russia are almost unheard of.

Authorities believe the suspects planned to build a bomb and attack the Maradykovsky chemical weapons storage and disposal facility in the Kirov region, about 1,000 km (620 miles) northeast of Moscow, the Federal Investigative Committee said.

"The suspects planned a terrorist attack ... that could have risked killing hundreds of people," it said in a statement.
