BBC: Istanbul Reina nightclub attack suspect captured

The main suspect in the New Year's Eve attack on an exclusive nightclub in Istanbul has been arrested in the Turkish city.

Abdulkadir Masharipov is believed to have mounted the assault on the Reina club which left 39 people dead.

The Uzbek national is said to have been caught in Istanbul's Esenyurt district.

Citizens of Israel, France, Tunisia, Lebanon, India, Belgium, Jordan and Saudi Arabia were among the victims, and dozens of people were injured.

ABC News Online: Istanbul nightclub attack: Turkey closes in on gunman as 'selfie' video of alleged attacker emerges

Turkish authorities believe they are closing in on the gunman who killed 39 people celebrating the New Year at an Istanbul nightclub.

According to local media, the gunman has been identified and is thought to be from a Central Asian country.

Reports suggest he came to Turkey in November last year with his wife and two children in order not to attract attention, and his family have now been detained.

Turkish media, including the state-run Anadolu Agency, have run a video which shows a man, who they said was the gunman, filming himself with a cell phone at Taksim Square.

Terror Attack On An Istanbul Nightclub That Was Celebrating New Years Eve Kills 39 And Wounds 69

New York Times: Terrorist Attack at Nightclub in Istanbul Kills Dozens

BURSA, Turkey — At least 39 people were killed and dozens more were wounded when a single gunman attacked a crowded Istanbul nightclub about an hour after midnight on New Year’s Day, Turkish officials said.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu called it an act of terrorism and said the gunman was still being sought early Sunday.

Sixteen of the people killed were foreigners, the Foreign Ministry said; it was not clear if any were Americans. At least 69 people were being treated at hospitals, Mr. Soylu said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the mass shooting, which came as threats against Turkey by the Islamic State and its supporters have increased. It was the fourth terrorist attack in Turkey in less than a month.

Thirty five people have been killed in an armed attack in an Istanbul nightclub, the city's governor has revealed.

The gunman, believed to have been dressed in a Santa costume, opened fire inside the Reina nightclub in Istanbul's Ortaköy district, where hundreds were celebrating the New Year.

A further 40 people are thought to have been wounded in the attack, which has been captured in CCTV footage. It happened at 1.30am local time.

Al Jazeera: Turkey: Suicide bomber kills more than 50 at wedding

Turkey's Erdogan blames ISIL for attack in the Gaziantep province that has left at least 51 killed and scores wounded.

More than 50 people have been killed and scores more wounded in a suicide attack at a wedding ceremony in Turkey's southeastern province of Gaziantep, near the Syria border.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that "Daesh is the likely perpetrator of the attack", using the Arabic name for ISIL, also known as ISIS.

The suicide bomber who attacked the wedding party was a child between the ages of 12 and 14, Erdogan said.

The president added that it is not yet clear whether the teenager detonated a suicide vest, or the vest was detonated remotely by someone else.

2 Istanbul Airport Bombers Have Been Identified

USA Today: Reports: 2 Istanbul airport bombers identified

Two of the suicide bombers who attacked Istanbul’s main airport earlier this week have been identified by Turkish authorities, according to the local media, while U.S. officials have named the mastermind of the operation.

The state-run Anadolu Agency reported Friday that the Bakirkoy Public Prosecutor’s office established the identity of two of the suspects as foreign nationals Rakim Bulgarov and Vadim Osmanov. Officials are still trying to determine the name of the third killer.

Osmanov was identified from a passport photocopy given to a property agent in Istanbul's Fatih district, the Daily Sabah newspaper reported.

Authorities imposed a temporary news blackout within Turkey on Friday on information concerning the investigation, the Associated Press reported.

Reuters: Istanbul bombers were Russian, Uzbek, Kyrgyz nationals: Turkish official

Three suspected Islamic State suicide bombers who killed 42 people in a gun and bomb attack at Istanbul airport this week were from Russia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, a Turkish government official said on Thursday.

The attack on Europe's third-busiest airport was the deadliest in a series of suicide bombings in Turkey this year.

The three bombers opened fire to create panic outside, before two of them got inside the terminal building and blew themselves up. The third detonated his explosives at the entrance. A further 239 people were wounded.

A survivor has told of the chaos, panic and fear inside the blood-smeared terminal following the co-ordinated attack on Istanbul airport, as tributes begin to pour in for the 41 victims of the deadly assault.

Laurence Cameron had only just landed as the three suicide bombers went on their deadly rampage through Ataturk Airport last night, shooting anyone who got in their way, before detonating their deadly loads and engulfing the terminal in the flames.

By the time he stepped into the terminal, those who had escaped their bombs and bullets were fleeing for their lives.

'It must have been just as we touched down,' he told MailOnline. 'I did not even hear the explosions, but as I walked out and round the corner, the whole building was running screaming towards me.
'It was just mass panic, guards running around with guns.'

The police officer, widely reported to be Yasin Durna in the Turkish media, shoots down the suicide bomber, who was making his way through the terminal with his gun, shooting at people

The hero police officer who gunned down one of the airport suicide bombers, saving dozens of people, is recovering in hospital after having his spleen removed.

The officer - named as Yasin Durna by local media - was seen risking his own life by confronting the terrorist as he chased innocent passengers through the terminal on Tuesday evening.

But Durna shot the suicide bomber, who fell to the floor, allowing people at Ataturk Airport to get away.

Three suicide bombers have launched a 'major, co-ordinated' attack at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, spraying bullets into crowds of terrified passengers and security personnel before blowing themselves up, injuring more than 140 people and leaving a death toll expected to rise to 50.

Eyewitnesses described the moment a hero policeman shot down one of the suicide bombers before he was able to detonate his explosives, giving holidaymakers a chance to escape and saving countless lives.

In shocking footage that captured the moment, the gunman can be seen running through the international arrivals terminal before falling to the ground - apparently felled by a police bullet - and sending his AK-47 skidding across the floor.

The police officer then approaches the gunman before realising he is about to detonate his suicide vest and running for his life.
Moments later, as the gunman writhes in pain on the floor, he detonates his bomb and the screen goes blank.

* Twin explosions rocked Istanbul's Ataturk airport in what officials say was a suicide attack
* Gunfire also reported to have broken out from the direction of its car park
* Initial reports claim around 40 people have been injured in the explosions
* At least 10 people have died, with taxi drivers ferrying injured to hospital

Suicide bombers have killed at least 10 and wounded 40 at Istanbul's Ataturk airport after blowing themselves up as police opened fire, according to Turkish officials.

It is understood that a 'terrorist' first opened fire with a Kalashnikov, before blowing himself up.

It is not yet clear how many attackers were involved as witnesses reported twin blasts that struck at the International Arrivals Terminal at 7.50pm GMT - 9.50pm local time.

The first photographs to emerge from the airport show a scene of devastation, with debris and what appear to be ceiling tiles scattered over the taxi ranks outside the airport.

Suicide Bomber Kills 4 In Istanbul

Reuters: Suicide bomber kills four, wounds 36 in Istanbul shopping district

A suicide bomber killed four people on Saturday in a busy shopping district in the heart of Istanbul, pushing the death toll from four separate suicide attacks in Turkey this year to more than 80.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the blast was "inhumane" and would not stop Turkey, which has been targeted by Kurdish and Islamic State militants, from fighting "centers of terrorism".

Israel said two of its citizens died in the attack, Washington said two Americans had been killed and a Turkish official said one victim was Iranian, suggesting that some of the dead may have had dual nationality.

Bombing In Turkey's Ankara Kills 34

New York Times: Explosion in Ankara Kills at Least 34, Turkish Officials Say

ISTANBUL — A large blast ripped through the heart of Ankara, Turkey’s capital, on Sunday, killing at least 34 people and injuring 125, government officials said.

The explosion occurred in Kizilay Square, near a central bus station, a park and several government ministries. Television footage showed several vehicles on fire.

The Ankara governor’s office said the explosion was believed to have been caused by a car bomb. On Friday, the United States Embassy there had warned Americans of a potential terrorist plot to attack Turkish government buildings and residences in Ankara.

Last month, a bombing on a military convoy in Ankara killed 28 people. A Turkish-based militant group, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, claimed responsibility for that attack, identifying the bomber as a 26-year-old Turkish citizen. The Turkish government blamed a Syrian Kurdish militia that is supported by the United States in the fight against the Islamic State in Syria.

Reuters: Car bomb attack on military in Turkish capital kills 28

Twenty-eight people were killed and dozens wounded in Turkey's capital Ankara on Wednesday when a car laden with explosives detonated next to military buses near the armed forces' headquarters, parliament and other government buildings.

The Turkish military condemned what it described as a terrorist attack on the buses as they waited at traffic lights in the administrative heart of the city.

A government spokesman said 28 people had been killed and 61 wounded in the blast, which took place near a busy intersection less than 500 metres from parliament during the evening rush hour.

This is believed to be the moment a ISIS suicide bomber blew themself up in the heart of Istanbul's main tourism district and killed ten German travellers after entering the country from Syria.

The massive explosion rocked the Sultanahmet neighbourhood where tens of thousands of tourists flock to see its world-famous monuments every day.

A picture circulated online by Turkish media showed a giant fireball erupting next to an Egyptian obelisk where tourists had gathered, however the image has not been independently verified.

Local media, quoting Turkish sources, claimed ten German travellers were killed and at least six Germans, one Norwegian and a Peruvian were wounded in the blast.

ISTANBUL—Turkey’s premier suggested Wednesday that Kurdish separatists played a major a role in the country’s worst terrorist attack even as Islamic State remained a main suspect, an allegation critics and experts dismissed as a political tactic amid mounting tensions before critical elections.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also criticized the U.S. for what he said was supporting Syrian Kurdish militants, potentially complicating relations between the NATO allies.

Four days after twin suicide bombings in the capital, Ankara, killed at least 99 people, Mr. Davutoglu said investigations established a strong chance the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, may also be involved in an assault he earlier said was most likely carried out by Islamic State. The government considers both groups enemies of the Turkish state.

Reuters: Islamic State is prime suspect in Turkey bombing, as protests erupt

Turkey's government said on Monday Islamic State was the prime suspect in suicide bombings that killed at least 97 people in Ankara, but opponents vented anger at President Tayyip Erdogan at funerals, universities and courthouses.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Saturday's bombing, the worst of its kind on Turkish soil, was intended to influence the outcome of November polls Erdogan hopes will restore the AK party he founded to an overall parliamentary majority. There is no question of postponing the vote, officials have said.

"It was definitely a suicide bombing," Davutoglu said in an interview broadcast live on Turkey's NTV. "DNA tests are being conducted. It was determined how the suicide bombers got there. We're close to a name, which points to one group."

At least 95 people were killed when two suspected suicide bombers struck a rally of pro-Kurdish and labor activists outside Ankara's main train station just weeks before elections, in the worst attack of its kind on Turkish soil.

Bodies covered by flags and banners, including those of the pro-Kurdish opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), lay scattered on the road among bloodstains and body parts. The HDP blamed the government which, it said, had blood on its hands.

Footage screened by broadcaster CNN Turk showed a line of young men and women holding hands and dancing, and then flinching as a large explosion flashed behind them, engulfing people carrying HDP and leftist party banners.

At least 86 people were killed when two suspected suicide bombers hit a rally of pro-Kurdish and leftist activists outside Ankara's main train station on Saturday, weeks ahead of an election, in the deadliest attack of its kind on Turkish soil.

Bodies covered by flags and banners, including those of the pro-Kurdish opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), lay scattered on the road among bloodstains and body parts.

"Like other terror attacks, the one at the Ankara train station targets our unity, togetherness, brotherhood and future," President Tayyip Erdogan said in a statement, calling for "solidarity and determination".
