New technology means the terror tunnel threat will become a "thing of the past," according to Liberman. Bennett says, "Those digging tunnels are digging their death trap."

The Israeli army destroyed a large Hamas tunnel which had infiltrated into Israeli territory from Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip, IDF Spokesman Brig-Gen. Ronen Manelis announced on Sunday.

The tunnel, which stretched a few hundred meters into southern Israel, was identified several weeks ago using “unique tools combined with advanced technology, intelligence and operational capabilities,” Manelis said.

Jewish Press: Israel’s ‘Iron Mole’ Offers Technological Solution to Terror Tunnels, Boosting IDF Deterrence

Prime Minister Netanyahu on Monday announced a new technological breakthrough in Israel’s effort to locate Hamas underground terror tunnels. Speaking after the announcement of the discovery of a terror tunnel reaching 90 feet into Israel from the Gaza Strip, Netanyahu boasted that the breakthrough had occurred only days earlier, making it a light-speed pace between pointing out the need for the technology, in August 2014, and the delivery.

The new technology has been dubbed “Iron Dome for Tunnels,” which JNi.media officially coined ‘Iron Mole,” feel free to share with the proper attribution.

Washington Free Beacon: Israel Announces Development of System that Can Detect Tunneling at a Distance

Hailed as underground equivalent of Iron Dome.

JERUSALEM—Haunted since last summer’s war in Gaza by Hamas’ success in infiltrating fighters into Israel through tunnels, Israel announced on Thursday the development of the first effective system for detecting tunneling activity at a distance.

One of Israel’s leading defense electronics firms, Elbit Systems, said the system it developed in conjunction with the Israeli Defense Ministry is based on a series of sensors. Data that they furnish is analyzed by a control system, using algorithms. Terming the system “the first of its kind in the world,” the firm said the method enables the precise identification of tunnel building “without false alarms.”

Israel Tests Hi-Tech Tunnel Detection System To Fight Threat From Underground -- The Telegraph

Many bemoan fact that such a large number of tunnels dug by Hamas from Gaza into Israel have gone undetected for so long

Deep in the bowels of Tel Aviv's underground, engineers and scientists recently conducted trials of a new hi-tech detection system that aims to eradicate the threat posed by Hamas's underground tunnels.

As international pressure mounts to end the current round of fighting between Israel and Hamas, and the operation in Gaza continues to claim more and more lives, the IDF is racing against time in order to discover as many tunnels as possible.

But once the IDF withdraws from Gaza, there are currently no mechanisms in place to prevent Hamas and others from digging new tunnels into Israel.

In a bid to find a solution, the IDF's elite Talpiot unit has been working on developing a tunnel detection system which was tested in Tel Aviv. Its costs are estimated to be $59 million.

My Comment: Tunnel warfare is nothing new .... but developing sophisticated technologies to counter it is. I am sure that many countries are now looking at these Israeli developments to incorporate it into their own military and/or conflict situations. The situation on the Korean peninsula and North Korea's use of tunnels to infiltrate South Korea comes to my mind.
