KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan does not want to link its removal from a U.S. terrorism list that is hindering access to foreign funding for the country’s economy with a normalisation of relations with Israel, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok said on Saturday.

Sources said this week that U.S. officials indicated in talks with a Sudanese delegation they wanted Khartoum to follow the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain and open ties with Israel.

Sudan’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism dates back to its toppled ruler Omar al-Bashir, and makes it difficult for its new transitional government to access urgently needed debt relief and foreign financing.

Al Jazeera: Sudan top diplomat says removal from US terror list top priority

Asmaa Abdalla, Sudan's first female foreign minister, says Khartoum welcomes financial support without interference.

Asmaa Abdalla has barely been Sudan's foreign minister for 24 hours, but she already has no doubts about her top priority: removing the country from the United States' list of state sponsors of "terrorism".

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Sunday, shortly after being sworn in as part of Sudan's new cabinet, Abdalla acknowledged that while the country faced "many" challenges, its removal from the list would lead to a desperately needed economic revival in the post-Omar al-Bashir era.

U.S. To Lift Sanctions On Sudan

Washington Post: U.S. lifts sanctions on Sudan, ending two decades of embargo

The United States permanently lifted a raft of sanctions on Sudan on Friday, saying the African nation had begun addressing concerns on fighting terrorism as well as human rights abuses against civilians in the country’s Darfur region.

The decision to lift the sanctions and end an economic embargo against Sudan comes after the Trump administration last month removed it from the list of countries whose citizens are subject to travel restrictions. Sudan was the only country that was removed.

But the decision leaves other sanctions in place for the time being, including those against individuals with arrest warrants related to atrocities committed during the conflict in Darfur. And it does not remove Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, a removal ardently sought by Sudan. A separate review is underway on that designation.

Why Is The CIA Providing Aid To Sudan, A State That Has Been Branded A State Sponsor Of Terror By Washington

CIA Training Sudan's Spies As Obama Officials Fight Over Policy -- Spy Talk/Washington Post

American officials may be at odds over U.S. policy toward Sudan, but the CIA is soldiering on there.

The East African regime is not just an international pariah for its genocidal track record in the western region of Darfur, it’s officially been branded by Washington as a terrorist state, in part for its past harboring of Islamist radicals, including Osama bin Laden in the 1990s.

Despite that, the CIA is continuing to train and equip Sudan’s intelligence service in the name of fighting terrorism.

My Comment: So we are now helping governments that are labeled as state sponsors of terror .... as well as committing genocide in Darfur.

With allies like this .... who needs enemies.
