Egypt Braces For More Protests

France 24: Egypt braces for fresh anti-Sisi protests

Egypt braced Friday for a second weekend of protests, as anger stemming from economic hardship and alleged top-level corruption threaten to eclipse a long-standing ban on street rallies.

Last week’s open defiance of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi triggered by viral videos from exiled Egyptian businessman Mohamed Aly has surprised observers in a country where opposition of all stripes has been severely curtailed.

Elected president in 2014 after pushing predecessor Mohamed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood from power the previous year, Sisi is seen by many as one of the most authoritarian figures in the Middle East.

Protests Against President Al-Sisi Continue For A Second Day In Egypt

BBC: Egypt: Protests and clashes enter second day

About 200 demonstrators took to the streets in the port city of Suez demanding his resignation.

Dozens were reportedly arrested and police responded with tear gas.

The protests - which also took place in Tahrir Square in Cairo on Friday - are in response to corruption allegations against President Sisi's government.

Reuters: Egypt kills hundreds of suspected militants in disputed gun battles

Egyptian security forces have shot dead more than 460 men since the middle of 2015. The Interior Ministry said they were Islamist militants or criminals, and the shootings were in self-defence. Bereaved families, forensic experts and some officials disagree.

CAIRO – Mohamed Abu Amer, a landscape gardener, was working in downtown Cairo when national security agents took him away on Feb. 6, 2018, his family said.

For almost six months Amer’s family waited for news of the 37-year-old father of two. Their messages to the Public Prosecutor and the Interior Ministry, which oversees the police and the national security agency, went unanswered.

Then on July 31, the ministry announced on its Facebook page that Amer was among five terrorists killed in a shootout earlier that day when police approached their hideout 40 km north of Cairo. Amer was wanted for the murder of a national security agent, the statement said.

Egypt Devalues Its Currency By 48% To Obtain An IMF Loan

BBC: Egypt allows its currency to float freely

Egypt has floated its currency in a move that has reduced its value by almost 50% against the dollar.

One US dollar is buying around 14 Egyptian pounds, up from the nine Egyptian pounds the central bank was trying to keep it at.

The country's central bank said the move was one of a list of reforms designed to strengthen confidence in the economy.

Egypt's main stock index jumped by more than 8% on Thursday.

The central bank has also increased interest rates by 3 percentage points to 14.75%.

Protests Return To Egypt Over Red Sea Island Deal With Saudi Arabia

Reuters: Protesters demand fall of Egypt's government over islands deal

Thousands of Egyptians angered by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's decision to hand over two islands to Saudi Arabia called on Friday for the government to fall, chanting a slogan from the 2011 Arab Spring uprising.

Their protests signaled that the former general, who is also under mounting criticism over the struggling economy, no longer enjoys the broad public support that let him round up thousands of opponents after he seized power in 2013.

In the evening, riot police who had surrounded the site of the biggest demonstration, in the heart of downtown Cairo, dispersed the crowd with tear gas, Reuters witnesses said.

Egyptian Security Forces Accidentally Killed 12 Mexican Tourists And Egyptian Guides In The Western Desert

Al Jazeera: Egyptian forces kill Mexican tourists in error

Ministry confirms deaths of 12 Mexicans and Egyptians travelling in convoy during fighting in the western desert.

Egypt's police and military have killed 12 Mexicans and Egyptians and injured 10 others by accidentally shooting at a Mexican tourist convoy while engaging fighters in the country's western desert, according to the interior ministry.

The ministry did not give the exact number of Mexicans killed, or indicate whether the vehicles were targeted by automatic weapons or aerial bombardment, in Sunday's incident.

"On the 13th during a joint military police and armed forces operation chasing terrorist elements in Wahat in the Western Desert, four pick-up trucks carrying Mexican tourists were mistakenly dealt with," the interior ministry said in a statement.

"The incident led to the death of 12 and wounding of 10 Mexicans and Egyptians.

"The area they were in was off-limits to foreign tourists."

An Egyptian court has sentenced 529 members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to death on charges including murder, in a sharp escalation of a crackdown on the movement.

Family members stood outside the courthouse screaming after the verdict - the biggest mass death sentence handed out in Egypt's modern history, defence lawyers said.

Turmoil has deepened since the army overthrew Egypt's first freely elected president, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim
Brotherhood, in July.

At least 11 killed as Muslim Brotherhood continued protests against being labelled a "terrorist" group by government.

At least 11 protesters have been killed as Muslim Brotherhood supporters clashed with police in Cairo and other Egyptian cities, the country's Health Ministry has said.

The ministry told Al Jazeera that four deaths were recorded in Cairo on Friday, two each in Alexandria, Ismaliya and Fayoum, and one in Minya in upper Egypt. Protesters said the figure was much higher.

Among those killed was a protester shot dead by police in Ismailia after joining a march following midday prayers, and a protester shot in the head in the Fayoum, southwest of Cairo.

A further 42 people were reported injured, while at least 122 people have been arrested, according to medical and security officials.

Growing Fears In Egypt That Islamic Militant Groups May Resort To A Violent Insurgency

Bomb Near Cairo Bus Raises Fear of Growing Militancy -- Wall Street Journal

Deepening Political Polarization and Crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood Could Push Egyptians Toward Violent Groups

CAIRO—A small bomb exploded near a municipal bus here on Thursday, raising fears that deepening political polarization of the country is fueling a violent insurgency.

The bombing, which injured five passengers, came two days after an apparent suicide car bombing killed 16 people at a police headquarters in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura.

Though thousands of Egyptians have died in political violence since the 2011 uprising, most were killed in street fighting surrounding protests. In the restive Sinai Peninsula, Islamic militants have mounted dozens of bombings and attacks, mainly targeting security forces.

The Mansoura and Cairo bombings this week show that the type of militant attacks that had been largely confined to remote and sparsely populated Sinai are now spreading to the densely populated heartland of Egypt as anger grows over a crackdown on the once-powerful Muslim Brotherhood group.

Egypt's Ousted Leader Mohammed Morsi Appears In Court But His Trial Is Adjourned Until 2014

In Court, Defiant Mursi Says He Is Still Egypt's President -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Ousted Egyptian leader Mohamed Mursi, given his first public forum since his overthrow in a trial where he could face execution, declared on Monday he was still Egypt's legitimate president and shouted: "Down with military rule!"

Mursi, an Islamist who was toppled by the army in July after mass protests against him, spoke with anger and passion, interrupting the first day of his trial repeatedly from his cage during an unruly hearing that the judge adjourned to January 8.

State television aired brief footage of Mursi, the first public sighting of the president since his overthrow in July. Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected president, had been kept in an undisclosed location since then.

"I am Dr. Mohamed Mursi. I am president of the republic," said Mursi.

Widepspread Unrest And Violence In Egypt

Scores Killed As Egypt Marks War Anniversary -- Al Jazeera

Clashes erupt after protesters defy army's warning against holding rallies on 40th anniversary of war with Israel.

At least 53 people were killed in clashes between supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and police in Egypt, as thousands of the military's supporters marked the anniversary of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

Loyalists of deposed President Mohamed Morsi, overthrown in a July military coup, tried to converge on Cairo's Tahrir Square for the anniversary celebrations on Sunday, when police confronted them.

At least 46 people were killed in Cairo and at least five others south of the capital, while another 268 people were wounded across Egypt, a spokesman of the Health Ministry said.

Mostafa Ramadan, an anti-coup protester and student at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, suffered injuries to the head after being hit by a rock and was struck in the hand with birdshot.

Thousands Of Muslim Brotherhood Protesters March In Cairo -- Voice Of America/Reuters

CAIRO — Defying a crackdown, thousands of supporters of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood marched through a Cairo suburb on Friday toward the site of their former protest camp that was crushed by security forces in August, a Reuters witness said.

Soldiers and policemen boosted their presence around Rabaa al-Adaweya mosque, the larger of the Brotherhood's two former Cairo sit-ins, as the march approached, the state news agency reported.

Egypt has been gripped by political and economic turmoil since army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi overthrew Islamist Mohamed Morsi, the country's first freely elected president, on July 3 after mass protests against his rule. Hundreds of people were killed when the security forces broke up the Brotherhood sit-ins in August.

Friday's protesters loudly chanted slogans calling for Sisi's downfall, and waved Egyptian flags.

Fighting between security forces and armed groups in Kerdassah district leaves one policeman dead, state TV reports.

Egyptian troops and police have stormed the Kerdassah district in the outskirts of Cairo to clear it of "terrorist elements", security officials said, triggering clashes with armed groups based in the area.

Vehicles carrying armed personnel were sent into the village on Thursday while army helicopters hovered above.

The clashes have so far left one policeman dead and at least 48 people were arrested, the interior ministry said, adding that another 135 people were wanted for arrest.

It said police forces took control of the area and imposed a curfew.

Egyptian Security Forces Storm Islamist-Held Town

Egyptian Security Forces Arrest 56 People After Storming Islamist-Held Town -- The National

CAIRO: Egyptian security forces took control of a southern town besieged by supporters of the former president, Mohammed Morsi, as suspected militants struck at police in Sinai with a blast that wounded nine people.

Military troops and police secured the entrances to Dalga, a town of more than 100,000 people, gaining control of a police station that had been torched along with churches following Mr Morsi’s July 3 removal.

The operation marked the latest offensive by security forces to curb what officials say is rising militancy since the Islamist president was pushed from office. It came as a blast struck a bus carrying police conscripts in north Sinai, injuring eight of them and a civilian.

Egypt Protests Weaken Amid Crackdown By The Military

Low Turnout At Egypt's Protests Highlights Islamists' Disarray -- Kristen Chick, Christian Science Monitor

Although the brutality of the military's crackdown on them has prompted broader public support, Egypt's Islamists are still having trouble mobilizing.

Thousands of anti-military and Islamist protesters took to the streets in Cairo and around the country today, displaying their defiance of a government crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups.

But their relatively low turnout – compared to the huge mobilization of previous Islamist protests – showed the extent to which the crackdown has hurt the Brotherhood and its ability to bring out supporters.

In Cairo, where military and security forces deployed to block several major squares and roads, some of the protests were smaller and more disorganized than typical for those called by the Muslim Brotherhood. But those who came out were willing to brave possible violence to make their voices heard on what the alliance dubbed “The Friday of Martyrs.” Roughly 1,000 people have been killed since Aug. 14, including at least 173 when protesters took to the streets last Friday.

Egypt's Army Chief: Military Will Confront Violence -- Voice of America

Small signs of normal life returned to Cairo Sunday, with traffic flowing and some stores and banks reopening, but Egypt's army chief warned that the city could blow up again at any time.

General Abdel-Fatah el-Sissi said police will not stand by and silently watch the country be destroyed. He threatened to use force against attacks on government buildings and police stations by anti-government protesters.

But Sisi said the army has no intention of seizing power. He also called on Islamic supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi to join the political process, saying "there is room for everyone."

Sinai Rocked By Deadly Ambush And Murder of 25 Egyptian Polive Officers

Militants Execute 25 Egyptian Police In Sinai Ambush -- USA Today

CAIRO — At least 25 policemen were killed Monday when assailants ambushed two minibuses carrying security personnel in Egypt's north Sinai Peninsula, which shares a border with Israel and the Gaza Strip and has been a restive center for militant activity.

The attack is among the deadliest in the peninsula since the 2011 overthrow of former president Hosni Mubarak and part of a larger backlash against the state over what militants view as a slew of injustices.

"What I can say about the future is that violence will not disappear anytime soon," said Khalil al-Anani, an expert on Islamist organizations and a senior fellow at the Washington-based Middle East Institute. "We should expect a new cycle of violence — religious, political and social violence, and sectarian violence."
