More than a dozen devoted United States Marines are at Walter Reed hospital following the deadly ISIS-K suicide blast that left 13 US service members dead—with many of the wounded warriors facing a long, grueling road to recovery. 

The deadly attack comes after President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan by August 31. 

The evacuation process was been marked by weeks of violence and chaos, which came to a bloody climax last Thursday when up to two suicide bombers attacked outside Kabul airport.

Furlough Notices Sent To Walter Reed Hospital Workers

 

Walter Reed Hospital Workers Receive Furlough Notices -- ABC 7 News 

ABC7 has confirmed the region’s two military hospitals are furloughing more than 3,500 civilian employees who care for the nation’s wounded warriors, nearly their entire civilian staffs.

The impacted employees are from departments across the board at both hospitals, including members of the trauma team, physical therapists and nurses.

They will be forced to take 11 unpaid furlough days starting in July. Hospital officials say the furloughs affect 2,392 caregivers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda.

That’s 94% of the civilian staff there. Officials say 1,163 caregivers at Fort Belvoir’s hospital in Virginia are being furloughed, affecting 85% of its civilian staff.

Officials promise patient care will not be compromised.

WASHINGTON — History has marched through the halls of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where presidents, princes, kings and generals mingled in their hospital gowns.

Lyndon B. Johnson visited an ill, pajama-clad Richard M. Nixon during the 1960 campaign. President Harry S. Truman went to his first church service here after taking office. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill that established the Interstate highway system in 1956, while a patient here, according to John Pierce, a retired Army colonel and an expert on the history of the hospital. Eisenhower later spent the last 11 months of his life in the presidential suite, as his health declined, his wife, Mamie, living in a small room nearby.

Stress, Suicide: Tough Wounds For The US Army

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and record-high suicide rates are haunting American veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, amid a taboo over mental distress.

At the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, psychological help is part and parcel of the care provided to soldiers wounded in combat, according to Colonel John Bradley, chief of the hospital's psychiatric department.

"We don't wait for a declaration of emotional distress or dysfunction but we rather see the patient right from the beginning. We are looking for early signs of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), depression or difficulty coping with their battle injuries," he told AFP.
