White House Says It Is Open To Curbing Its War Powers

Politico: Biden backs new war powers vote in Congress, White House says

Facing a bipartisan push to sunset decades-old authorizations, the president will pursue "a narrow and specific framework" to rein in open-ended conflicts.

President Joe Biden intends to work with Congress to repeal the war authorizations that have underpinned U.S. military operations across the globe for the past two decades and negotiate a new one that reins in the open-ended nature of America’s foreign wars, the White House said Friday.

In a statement to POLITICO, press secretary Jen Psaki said the president wants to “ensure that the authorizations for the use of military force currently on the books are replaced with a narrow and specific framework that will ensure we can protect Americans from terrorist threats while ending the forever wars.”

WNU Editor: Call me skeptical. But reading between the lines and what President Biden's spokespersons have said publicly. I get the impression that he wants to tell everyone that he wants to end full military authorizations, but he still wants to be able to act on what the administration sees as threats without having to get the approval of Congress.

The resolution that Sens. Tim Kaine (D–Va.) and Todd Young (R–Ind.) introduced on Wednesday calls for the repeal of two AUMFs passed in 1991 and 2002 that authorized military force in Iraq. But the (quoting from Reason) ....

.... resolution most notably does not repeal the AUMF passed in 2001 just days after September 11, which authorizes the use of the military against any nation, terrorist group, or individual the president deems to have been involved in the attacks. That AUMF is why we still have troops in Afghanistan, and so this resolution will not end our military intervention there.

Joe Biden could be stripped of war powers after a bipartisan bill was introduced by senators on Wednesday to repeal decades-old authorizations awarded to the US President for the use of military force.

It comes as Biden is accused of using the authorizations to 'stretch his war powers' after launching his first airstrike in Syria last week without congressional approval.

The bill was also introduced just hours after an Iraqi military base housing US troops and civilian contractors was hit by rocket attacks, Politico reported.
