Hundreds Feared Dead In Darfur Clashes: U.N. -- Yahoo News/Reuters
KHARTOUM (Reuters) – Hundreds of civilians are feared to have died in a surge of fighting between the Sudanese army and rebels in the turbulent Darfur region, a U.N. source told Reuters on Monday.
A Sudan army spokesman denied any fighting was taking place in Darfur's mountainous Jabel Marra region and accused insurgents of harassing and attacking locals.

More than 10,000 troops have been deployed to maintain law and order and quell looting in towns affected by the Chilean earthquake and tsunamis, as the death toll rises and the government scrambles to provide aid to thousands of people left homeless.
The government sharply raised the death toll to 711 from Saturday's 8.8 magnitude quake as harrowing scenes of destruction emerged in isolated towns swamped by the giant waves that were triggered by one of the strongest earthquakes in a century.

U.S. Marines, Afghan Troops To Stay In Marja For Months -- Washington Post
MARJA, AFGHANISTAN -- More than 2,000 U.S. Marines and about 1,000 Afghan troops who stormed the town of Marja as part of a major NATO offensive against a resurgent Taliban will stay several months to ensure that insurgents do not return, Marine commanders said Sunday.
Meanwhile, insurgents are striking back by attacking resupply convoys moving in and out of Marja with roadside bombs, Marines said Sunday. Four convoys have been hit in the last two days, Marines said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not supposed to release the information. There was no word on casualties.

USAF Sets KC-X First Flight, IOC Dates -- Defense News
The U.S. Air Force expects a first flight for its KC-X tanker by 2012 and hopes to have the plane flying refueling missions by 2017, service officials said Feb. 25.
If all goes well with the latest restart of the $35 billion competition, the service expects to buy four test airplanes that will be used for test flights and later be modified into production aircraft, according to a service announcement.

The suicide bomber behind the Dec. 30 attack on a CIA base in eastern Afghanistan claims in a posthumously released recording that he lured U.S. and Jordanian intelligence officers into a trap by sending them misleading information about terrorist targets as well as videotapes he made of senior al-Qaeda leaders.
The bomber, a Jordanian physician named Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi, also claims that he intended to kidnap only a single Jordanian intelligence officer, but then stumbled on an unexpected opportunity to attack a large group of Americans and their Jordanian allies at once.
THE US military is asking inventors to come up with designs for a robot that can trundle onto a battlefield and rescue injured troops, with little or no help from outside.
Retrieving casualties while under fire is a major cause of combat losses, says a posting on the Pentagon's small business technology transfer website (bit.ly/aRXXQU). So the army wants a robot with strong, dexterous arms and grippers that can cope with "the large number of body positions and types of locations in which casualties can be found".

According to an aide familiar with the proposal, the bill includes a mandate for federal agencies to prepare emergency response plans in the event of a massive, nationwide cyberattack.
The president would then have the ability to initiate those network contingency plans to ensure key federal or private services did not go offline during a cyberattack of unprecedented scope, the aide said.
