Chile's Conservative Parties Win Majority In Vote To Draft A New Constitution

 

DW: Chile: Far-right party on top in constitution rewrite vote 

The far-right opposition Republican Party is set to take almost half of the seats on a committee to rewrite Chile's constitution. Its leader has previously expressed kinship with Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro. 

A far-right party came first in an election on Sunday to choose 50 members of a committee that will rewrite Chile's constitution. 

The Republican Party led with 35% of the vote, equating to around 22 seats on the committee.

The party opposes the longstanding effort to change Chile's constitution, which was imposed in 1980 during the right-ring dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. 

"Today is the first day of a better future, a new start for Chile," said the party's leader Jose Antonio Kast, who has previously kinship with other populist conservative leaders such as former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and former US President Donald Trump. 

"Chile has defeated a failed government," he said.

SANTIAGO, Chile — Chileans on Sunday delivered a resounding rejection to a new leftist constitution that aimed to transform the country into a more egalitarian society. 

In a referendum, Chilean voters were asked to approve or reject a proposal to replace the country’s 1980 dictatorship-era constitution — considered one of the most market-friendly in the world — with one of the world’s most inclusive. 

The new charter envisioned a dramatic shift to the left in the South American nation, expanding the role of government and calling for an economic model that would narrow inequalities and help lift up the poor. 

But for many Chileans, the proposed changes were too drastic. 

With more than 95 percent of ballot boxes tallied Sunday night, about 62 percent of voters rejected the charter, while 38 percent approved it, according to Chile’s electoral authority.

(Bloomberg) -- Hailed as the face of a new Latin American left, Chile President Gabriel Boric was not only elected in a landslide, he embraced a constitutional rewrite to turn his nation from a neoliberal mining power into a model of humane green development. 

But just six weeks in office, Boric faces turmoil, his disapproval rating up more than 30 points, his closest aide under attack for rookie mistakes, the economy sputtering and crime rising.

After two years of a global pandemic with inflation and supply chain troubles exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many heads of government are facing discontent. But the suddenness of Boric’s troubles, and their depth, are especially noteworthy.

CNN: Leftist Gabriel Boric, 35, wins Chile's presidential election 

(CNN)Leftist and former student leader Gabriel Boric, 35, will become Chile's youngest President since its return to democracy in 1990, after he won a presidential runoff election on Sunday. 

With 99.95% of ballots counted, Boric won with 55.87% of the vote, securing victory over his right-wing opponent, Jose Antonio Kast, who trailed with 44.13%, according to the Electoral Service of Chile.

Boric will be sworn in as President on March 11. 

Earlier Sunday, Kast conceded the election to Boric and congratulated his opponent "on his great triumph." "From today he is the elected President of Chile and deserves all our respect and constructive collaboration. Chile is always first," Kast tweeted.

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera has been impeached by the lower house of Chile’s congress, setting up a trial in the nation’s Senate over allegations he favored the sale of a family property while in office  

President Sebastián Piñera was impeached Tuesday by the lower house of Chile's congress, setting up a trial in the nation's Senate over allegations he favored the sale of a family property while in office. 

The vote to impeach got the bare minimum of 78 votes needed in the 155-member Chamber of Deputies and followed a marathon 20-hour session. 

Sixty-seven legislators voted against impeachment, including several members of the opposition. 

Others abstained or were absent. 

It's unlikely he will be removed by the 43-member Senate, where the opposition has only 24 of the 29 votes needed to remove a president.

Opposition politicians have launched impeachment proceedings against Chile’s president, Sebastián Piñera, over possible irregularities in the sale of a mining company, after new details about the deal were revealed in the Pandora papers. 

Lawmakers cited an “ethical duty” to hold the president accountable for the alleged irregularities in his involvement in the controversial Dominga project.

 Earlier this month Chile’s public prosecutor’s office said that it would open an investigation into possible bribery-related corruption charges and tax violations linked to the sale, which was completed in the British Virgin Islands.

A plebiscite called in response to street protests in 2019 sees 78% of people back a new charter to replace one imposed by military dictator Chile has voted overwhelmingly in favor of rewriting the the country’s constitution to replace guiding principles imposed four decades ago under the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. 

Jubilant pro-reform supporters took to the streets of the capital Santiago and other cities to celebrate on Sunday night after exit polls showed that 78.24% of people had voted to approve a rewrite, while 21.76% rejected the change.

Reuters: Chilean lawmakers warn democracy at stake as violence spikes

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chilean lawmakers agreed late on Wednesday to fast-track reforms to beef up security, warning that a resurgence in violence and vandalism was threatening to derail the country’s 30-year-old democracy.

Five weeks of unrest over inequality and shabby social services have left at least 26 dead and more than 13,500 injured, prosecutors said. Riots have hobbled the capital’s public transport system, once the envy of Latin America, and caused billions in losses for private business.

The deal, struck between ruling party and opposition lawmakers, acknowledged the government had done too little, too late to stem the crisis. “The country is confronting a crisis of violence and vandalism that threatens our democracy,” begins the two-page document.

Biggest Demonstrations Yet Rock Protest-Stricken Chile

Reuters: One million Chileans march in Santiago, city grinds to halt

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - As many as a million Chileans protested peacefully late into the evening on Friday in the capital Santiago in the biggest rallies yet since violence broke out a week ago over entrenched inequality in the South American nation.

Protesters waving national flags, dancing, banging pots with wooden spoons and bearing placards urging political and social change streamed through the streets, walking for miles (km) from around Santiago to converge on Plaza Italia.Traffic already hobbled by truck and taxi drivers protesting road tolls ground to a standstill in Santiago as crowds shut down major avenues and public transport closed early ahead of marches that built throughout the afternoon.

By mid-evening, most had made their way home in the dark ahead of an 11 p.m. military curfew.

CNN: Chile's president declares state of emergency after riots over metro fare hike

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera declared a state of emergency in a televised address to the nation on Friday after days of violent protests in the country's capital.

Hundreds have taken to the streets of Santiago and surrounding cities in recent days to protest against the rising cost of public transport, vandalizing metro stations and even setting an electrical company building on fire.

"The objective of this state of emergency is very simple, but very profound," Piñera said, "it's to ensure public order, bring peace to Santiago and protect public and private property."

Piñera condemned this week's violence and looting, saying that because of currency exchange fluctuations, it was necessary to raise the price of public transport. But he added that he sympathized with those who were bearing the cost of the rises.

The Telegraph: Former leader of Chile Sebastian Pinera returns to office after beating left-wing opponent

Former Chilean leader Sebastian Pinera on Sunday night became president elect for the second time after comfortably winning an election that was expected to came down to the wire.

Mr Pinera, a conservative billionaire businessman who held office between 2010 and 2014, beat Alejandro Guillier, a journalist turned politician from the centre left.

With more than 90 percent of the vote in, Mr Guillier congratulated his opponent while conceding defeat with 45.4 percent of the vote to Pinera's 54.5 percent.

VOA: With Two Unpopular Candidates, Chilean Election Up for Grabs

SANTIAGO, CHILE — Billionaire Sebastian Pinera once looked set to easily win Chile’s presidential runoff and swing the country back to the right. Now, the election’s outcome is so uncertain analysts say the nation could remain on its center-left path.

Pinera, who previously governed Chile from 2010 to 2014, won the first round of voting in November with 36 percent support, below expectations from pollsters. His center-left challenger Sen. Alejandro Guillier garnered 22 percent. Pinera’s failure to get an outright majority forced Sunday’s runoff between the two candidates, the top vote-getters in a crowded field.

Polls are banned in the weeks ahead of the election, but analysts say that based on the last polls released and trends seen, it appears the race is now up for grabs.

At Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s funeral, one of his grandsons, an Army captain also named Augusto Pinochet, gave a eulogy so defiant and aggressive that he was cashiered the next day. Earlier, as the general lay in state in his dress uniform and Chileans filed by his casket to pay their last respects, the grandson of another general, assassinated by Pinochet’s secret police, spat on the former dictator’s cadaver full in the face.

That was barely three years ago, and it suggested that the ghost of General Pinochet, who ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990 and continued as army commander until 1998, would be hard to exorcise. But the scenes of Chileans’ embracing soldiers who aided in rescue and reconstruction efforts after the huge earthquake last month make all that divisiveness seem an eternity ago.

SANTIAGO, Chile — As smaller tremors continued to jolt this earthquake-ravaged country on Tuesday morning, the Chilean government sought to quell looting and unrest in one of the hardest-hit cities by deploying thousands of government troops and extending an overnight curfew until midday.

Chilean newspapers quoted President Michelle Bachelet as saying that the situation in the devastated city of Concepción was “under control,” even though reports indicated that most of the city was still without electricity, phone service or running water.
