China's Push To Have A 'World-Class Army' Is Making Its Asian Neighbours Nervous

AFP: As China aims for 'world-class army', Asia starts to worry

Beijing (AFP) - Chinese President Xi Jinping's pledge to build a "world-class army" by 2050 is making his neighbours nervous, but analysts say Beijing's military ambitions do not constitute a strategic threat -- for now.

With purchases and construction of fighter jets, ships and hi-tech weaponry, China's military budget has grown steadily for 30 years, but remains three times smaller than that of the United States.

Now, Beijing wants to catch up.

"We should strive to fully transform the people's armed forces into a world-class military by the mid-21st century," Xi told 2,300 delegates of the Chinese Communist Party, which he heads and which controls the army.

WNU Editor: China has border disputes with everyone of it neighbors .... it also has a history of using the military to assert its claims. It is this environment, coupled with China's willingness to use force .... that is making China's neighbor's nervous. Here is an easy prediction .... expect Asian countries to form alliances to counter China, as well as a corresponding increase in defense spending throughout the continent.

Wall Street Journal: North Korean Hackers Stole Submarine Secrets From Daewoo, Lawmaker Says

Revelation comes weeks after news of a similar attack on South Korea’s defense ministry.

SEOUL—North Korean hackers are suspected to have broken into a South Korean shipyard and stolen military secrets, in a breach made public less than a month after news of a similar attack in which hackers stole joint U.S.-South Korea war plans.

The attack, revealed by a Seoul lawmaker and corroborated by defense-industry sources, targeted Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. , which makes warships including submarines.

Hackers stole 60 classified documents including blueprints and technical data for submarines and vessels equipped with Aegis weapon systems, said Kyeong Dae-soo, a lawmaker with the opposition Liberty Korea Party.

Asian Correspondent: Chinese authorities foil North Korean assassination attempt on leader’s nephew

CHINESE authorities have reportedly arrested two men in an alleged plot to assassinate the eldest son of Kim Jong-Nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korean supreme leader who was killed in a cloak-and-dagger style murder in Malaysia earlier this year.

Sources who spoke with South Korea’s JoongAng Ilbo said the two men were allegedly North Korean operatives who were part of a seven-man team secretly dispatched to China to kill 22-year-old Kim Han-Sol.

The two suspects were arrested last week and are currently being questioned in the outskirts of Beijing, while the remaining five are believed to be still at large, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported.

Newsweek: Trump Won't Visit DMZ On Asia Trip Because It's Becoming "Cliche"

President Donald Trump will reportedly be skipping the infamous demilitarized zone between North and South Korea during his Asia tour next month — because it's "cliche."

A White House official confirmed Tuesday that Trump won't make the DMZ part of his 11-day tour, flouting a visit that has been a tradition for past presidents. He will instead visit Camp Humphreys, a military base about 40 miles south of the South Korean capital, Seoul. Trump is so far only the second commander-in-chief in three decades who hasn't gone to the zone.

Trump's team decided the DMZ visit is "becoming a bit of a cliche, frankly," a White House official told a Washington Post reporter, explaining the decision.

South Korean President: We Will Not Develop Or Possess Nuclear Weapons Nor Will We Recognize North Korea As A Nuclear State

Washington Post: South Korea will not develop or possess nuclear weapons, president says

President Moon Jae-in told lawmakers Wednesday that South Korea would not seek to have nuclear weapons and said that Seoul would never accept its neighbor North Korea as a nuclear-armed state.

“According to the joint agreement by the two Koreas on denuclearization, North Korea’s nuclear state cannot be accepted or tolerated. We will not develop or possess nuclear weapons either,” the president said in his second state of the nation address at the National Assembly, South Korea’s parliament.

Recent tests by North Korea have led to a renewed debate about nuclear weapons in South Korea. Although the country once sought its own nuclear weapons in the 1970s during the presidency of Park Chung-hee, leaders were persuaded by the United States to abandon such ambitions.

U.S. And North Korean Dilomats Are Engaged In Direct Talks

Reuters: Exclusive: U.S. pursues direct diplomacy with North Korea despite Trump rejection

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is quietly pursuing direct diplomacy with North Korea, a senior State Department official said on Tuesday, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s public assertion that such talks are a waste of time.

Using the so-called “New York channel,” Joseph Yun, U.S. negotiator with North Korea, has been in contact with diplomats at Pyongyang’s United Nations mission, the official said, at a time when an exchange of bellicose insults between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has fueled fears of military conflict.

While U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Oct. 17 said he would continue “diplomatic efforts ... until the first bomb drops,” the official’s comments were the clearest sign the United States was directly discussing issues beyond the release of American prisoners, despite Trump having dismissed direct talks as pointless.

WNU Editor: Reuters is calling this an exclusive .... but this is nothing more but a "back-channel" for U.S. and North Korean officials to meet .... something that happens everyday at the United Nations building in New York City. And as to the question .... is this a waste of time? If you expect results .... yes .... because these meetings rarely accomplish anything. So why have a back channel? It is to maintain communications in the event that if things do go bad, messages can still be exchanged outside of the normal lines of communication.

CNN: Russian bombers escorted away from US aircraft carrier

Washington (CNN)US Navy F/A-18 fighter jets were dispatched from the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and escorted two Russian TU-95 bombers that were approaching the ship on Sunday, according to two US defense officials.

The interaction -- which occurred as the Russian bombers flew about 80 miles from the US carrier -- was deemed safe and professional, the officials said, and the Russian aircraft proceeded without incident.

The USS Ronald Reagan was operating in the Sea of Japan/ East Sea at the time of the interaction.

Three US carriers -- USS Ronald Reagan, USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Nimitz -- have been operating in the US Navy's 7th Fleet area of operations, which covers the eastern Indian and western Pacific oceans, in recent days.

The Roosevelt and Nimitz joined the Reagan, which is based in Japan, in the region last week.

Facebook, Google And Twitter Officials Grilled By Washington Lawmakers Over Russian Election Interference

The Hill: Tech companies grilled over Russian election interference

Facebook, Google and Twitter officials were grilled on Tuesday by lawmakers from both parties on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who expressed frustration with the companies’ response so far to the use of their platforms by Russia in last year’s election.

Lawmakers pushed the companies for more answers on how their platforms were used by both Russia and terrorist groups, and stressed that it was in the national security interests of the U.S. to find solutions.

“The bottom line is that these platforms are being used to undermine and harm our way of life,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), the panel’s chairman.
