US Intelligence Says Chinese Missiles Were Filled With Water Not Fuel That Led President Xi To Purge The Army

Bloomberg: US Intelligence Shows Flawed China Missiles Led Xi to Purge Army

* China missiles filled with water, not fuel: US intelligence

* Xi seeking to root out corruption, prepare military for combat

US intelligence indicates that President Xi Jinping’s sweeping military purge came after it emerged that widespread corruption undermined his efforts to modernize the armed forces and raised questions about China’s ability to fight a war, according to people familiar with the assessments.

The corruption inside China’s Rocket Force and throughout the nation’s defense industrial base is so extensive that US officials now believe Xi is less likely to contemplate major military action in the coming years than would otherwise have been the case, according to the people, who asked not to be named discussing intelligence.

China Appoints A New Defense Minister

BBC: China appoints Dong Jun as new defence minister

China has named Dong Jun as its new defence minister, two months after his predecessor was officially sacked.

Mr Dong, a former navy commander, takes over from Li Shangfu - who was last seen in public in August.

Mr Dong's appointment was announced by China's top legislators at a Standing Committee meeting of the National People's Congress in Beijing on Friday.

The move follows a slew of dismissals of top military officials from the country's top posts earlier this year.

As well as Mr Li, it included the removal of Qin Gang as foreign minister in July.

No reasons were given for Mr Li or Mr Qin's dismissals. Both had been in their posts for only seven months respectively.

Further sackings took place this week too, with nine senior military officials removed from the Standing Committee on Friday, Reuters reported, citing state media outlet Xinhua.

China Officially Removes Li Shangfu As Defence Minister After Two-Month Absence

DNYUZ/New York Times: China Dismisses Defense Minister Amid Swirl of Speculation

Just four months ago, China’s defense minister, Gen. Li Shangfu, was at a forum for regional officials in Singapore, serving as the face of his country’s bold vision for reshaping Asia’s balance of power.

He cast China as a force for stability and accused the United States of stirring trouble in the region, suggesting that its leaders should “mind your own business.”

Now, General Li has been dismissed after nearly two months out of public view — the latest example of China’s capricious rules of power under the strongman leader Xi Jinping.

How Significant Is President Xi's Purge Of The Military?

New York Times: Xi Remade China’s Military. Now a Purge Threatens its Image.

As Xi Jinping has entrenched his hold on power in China, he has likened himself to a physician, eradicating the toxins of corruption and disloyalty that threaten the rule of the Communist Party. And his signature project for over a decade has been bringing to heel the once extravagantly corrupt military leadership.

But recent upheavals at high levels of the People’s Liberation Army forces suggest that Mr. Xi’s cure has not endured. Last week, he abruptly replaced two top generals in the Rocket Force, an unexplained shake-up that suggests suspicions of graft or other misconduct in the sensitive arm of the military that manages conventional and nuclear missiles.

CNN: Exclusive: Never-before-seen Chinese military blimp caught on satellite images of remote desert base

A large blimp developed by the Chinese military has been spotted for the first time at a remote base in the desert of northwestern China, exclusive new satellite imagery obtained by CNN shows.

Aerospace experts say the images, taken three months before a Chinese spy balloon was shot down off the coast of South Carolina, could signal a notable advancement in China’s airship program, demonstrating a more versatile and maneuverable craft than previously seen or known.

The images, taken in November 2022 by US satellite imaging company BlackSky, show a roughly 100-foot long blimp in the middle of a nearly kilometer-long runway at a desert military complex in northwestern China.

CNN presented the imagery to a number of aerospace experts, who confirmed they show a blimp and runway, bookended by a pivot point used to launch airships, as well as a massive, nearly 900-foot airship hangar.

China successfully tested a ground-based midcourse ballistic missile interception, the defence ministry announced on Friday.

The result brought the number of such missile interceptions to at least six.

Friday's test took place within Chinese territory and space and "accomplished its objectives", according to a statement from the ministry.

"This test is defensive in nature and it does not target any particular country," the statement added, without elaborating.

For the first time, the PLA has officially revealed the performance of its advanced anti-ship hypersonic missile, sending a warning to the US amid high tensions in the Taiwan Strait, Chinese analysts said.

China’s YJ-21, or Eagle Strike-21, has a terminal speed of Mach 10, cannot be intercepted by any anti-missile weapons system in the world and can launch lethal strikes towards enemy ships, according to an article posted by the official Weibo account of the People’s Liberation Army Strategic Support Force on Monday.

China Admits Its Military Is Short Of Soldiers Trained In Hi-Tech Operations

SCMP: Chinese military short of troops trained in hi-tech operations, PLA Daily reveals in rare show of candour

* Vice-captain of corvette yet to complete training test, military paper says, confirming reports of a lingering talent shortage, especially in the navy

* In another first, the report cites 'training resources imbalance' and ship maintenance as reasons for the backlog holding up many promotions

The vice-captain of a warship has yet to complete a key training test, China's military has revealed, in an indirect but rare acknowledgement of its shortage of highly skilled troops.

The admission, in a recent media report, highlights a core problem as China speeds up the modernisation of the People's Liberation Army - a lack of hi-tech expertise limiting state-of-the-art equipment from use to its full extent, especially in the navy.

The vice-captain of the Zhangye - a Type 056 corvette - had not completed an important training assessment, military mouthpiece PLA Daily said in a report last week.

Has China's Military Caught Up To The U.S.?

In this November 3, 2017 photo released by China's Xinhua news agency, President Xi Jinping (centre) visits the Central Military Commission (joint battle command centre in Beijing as part of an inspection tour.

Wall Street Journal: China's Military Is Catching Up to the U.S. Is It Ready for Battle?

China’s military is emerging as a true competitor to the U.S. under Xi Jinping.

The People’s Liberation Army now has hypersonic missiles that evade most defenses, a technology the U.S. is still developing. Its attack drones can swarm to paralyze communications networks. China’s naval ships outnumber America’s, and it launched its third aircraft carrier this summer, the first to be designed and built in the country. Its defense budget is second only to the U.S.’s. China’s military has more serving members, at around 2 million, compared with just under 1.4 million in the U.S.

The question for Mr. Xi, which he has raised in public, is whether those forces are ready for battle.

China hasn’t fought a war since a brief border clash with Vietnam in 1979. Unlike American forces, who have fought for most of the past two decades in Iraq and Afghanistan, China’s service members have virtually no combat experience—which some Chinese leaders have referred to as a “peace disease.” Finding a solution short of actual war has been a priority for Mr. Xi, especially as he seeks to prepare the country for a potential showdown with the U.S.

China Uses Its Version Of The HIMAR To Fire Rockets Into The Taiwan Strait

The Eurasian Times: China’s Version Of HIMARS Bombard Taiwan Strait; Experts Call It Game-Changer In Conflict With Taipei

Images have emerged on social media of a Chinese Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), described as China’s version of US-made HIMARS that has gained a ‘cult status’ after their deployment in Ukraine. According to an expert, this Chinese-made MLRS could be a ‘game changer’ in a potential conflict with Taiwan.

The pictures were posted on Twitter by Lyle Goldstein, the Director of Asia Engagement at the Defense Priorities think tank.

According to Goldstein, the images, sourced from the Chinese television channel CCTV-7, showed the MLRS firing rockets into the Taiwan Strait on August 4, as part of the Chinese military drills in waters surrounding Taiwan in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s arrival on the island by aircraft on August 2, despite several warnings from China.

The Air Force officer responsible for all aspects of contracting for the service has issued a stark warning about China’s rapid gains in defense acquisition, with the result that its military is now getting its hands on new equipment “five to six times” faster than the United States. This is the latest sobering evidence from a U.S. defense official suggesting that the Pentagon needs to urgently overhaul the way it goes about fielding new weapons, while China increasingly appears to be jockeying for the lead in the development of all kinds of high-end military technologies as part of its broader drive to become a preeminent strategic power.

CNN: China claims successful anti-ballistic missile interceptor test

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)China successfully conducted an anti-ballistic missile test on Sunday night, according to the country's Defense Ministry, part of ongoing military efforts to enhance the country's defensive capabilities.

It was a land-based mid-course missile tested within China's borders, the ministry said in a brief statement, adding the test was defensive in nature and not targeted against any country.

Anti-ballistic missile systems are meant to shield a country from potential attacks by using projectiles to intercept incoming missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

Some analysts liken it to shooting down a bullet with another bullet.

China has been honing its ship-killing skills for potential future conflicts on new targets in a remote desert, according to new satellite photos reviewed by USNI News. New analysis shows the People’s Liberation Army is testing the ability to hit ships in port with long-range ballistic missiles.

Since USNI News reported China has been building aircraft carrier targets in the Takmalakan Desert, other target sites have emerged forming a string of large-scale target ranges running along the eastern edge of the desert, according to new satellite photos. Several of these are naval and two have layouts that appear to be modeled on ships in port.

Chinese Navy Tests A New Hypersonic Anti-Ship Missile

Warzone/The Drive: Mysterious New Missile Launched By China’s Giant Type 055 Destroyer

This appears to be our first glimpse of China’s anti-ship ballistic missile tailored to be fired from its most advanced warships.

Video has emerged out of China showing what is reported to be one of its huge Type 055 destroyers launching a mysterious new missile out of one of its vertical launch cells. While exactly what missile this is and what concept of operations underpins it isn't perfectly clear, there are certainly some distinct possibilities, one of which is highly probable.

The video clip shows a missile being 'cold-launched' then boosted into the air. The booster is relatively short while its payload is a long conical-like shape with small fins at its base. The design is highly reminiscent of a maneuverable reentry vehicle (MaRV).

Warzone/The Drive: This Is Our Best Look Yet At China’s Air-Launched ‘Carrier Killer’ Missile

China’s mysterious air-launched anti-ship ballistic missile just made its latest appearance.

A new video has appeared providing us with an unprecedented view of a Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) Xian H-6N bomber carrying an air-launched anti-ship ballistic missile, or ASBM, a highly intriguing weapon that we have looked at in detail on more than one occasion in the past. Known also by the Western designation CH-AS-X-13, this missile remains in many ways mysterious, so any chance to get a better look at it is welcome indeed.

The video, and stills from it, began to circulate on social media today, with the original footage posted to Twitter by a user, apparently based in China, with the handle @lqy99021608. No further details about where or when the video was taken are available, but the huge missile on the centerline of the H-6N certainly appears to be related to the YJ-21, or Eagle Strike 21, a weapon that is itself thought to be a ship-launched version of the ground-based DF-21D (CSS-5 Mod 5), another anti-ship ballistic missile that reportedly became operational in 2010.

Chinese President Xi Wants The Military To Create An 'Elite Force' To Win Wars

Chinese leader Xi Jinping (L) speaks after reviewing the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy fleet in the South China Sea

Zero Hedge/Epoch Times: China's Xi Orders Military To Create "Elite Force" To Win Wars

Chinese leader Xi Jinping delivered this year’s mobilization orders to the regime’s military on Jan. 5, saying it must evolve into an elite force capable of winning any war.

"The armed forces must closely follow the evolution of technology, warfare, and rivals, redouble their efforts to better combine training with combat operations, and strengthen systematic training and the use of technologies to develop an elite force that is capable of fighting and winning wars,” the order said, according to state-run news agency Xinhua.

Xi, who is both the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the head of the Party’s military as chairman of the Central Military Commission, has issued mobilization orders annually since 2018. The orders signal the priorities of the armed forces and initiate military-wide training for the coming year.
