The highly-maneuverable generation 4+ warplane is the modern variant of the design equipped with thrust-vectoring engines. It was based on the Su-30MKI, the version made by Russia for the Indian Air Force. The SM version made its maiden flight in 2012.

* Facebook Inc said Monday Russia-based operatives published about 80,000 posts on the social network over a two-year period
* It's estimated that 126million Americans saw posts that were an effort to sway U.S. politics
* New data was included in written testimony to lawmakers ahead of key hearings with social media and technology companies about Russian meddling
* Twitter Inc separately has found 2,752 accounts linked to Russian operatives
* Google, owned by Alphabet Inc, said in a statement on Monday it had found $4,700 in Russia-linked ad spending during the 2016 U.S. election cycle
Facebook Inc said Russia-based operatives published about 80,000 posts on the social network over a two-year period in an effort to sway U.S. politics and that about 126 million Americans may have seen the posts during that time.
Facebook's latest data on the Russia-linked posts - possibly reaching around half of the U.S. population of voting age - far exceeds the company's previous disclosures.
It was included in written testimony provided to U.S. lawmakers on Monday ahead of key hearings with social media and technology companies about Russian meddling in elections on Capitol Hill this week.
WNU Editor: I for one am scratching my head right now on this Facebook claim. I have spent the past decade trying to understand the art of doing legitimate posts that will generate legitimate web traffic to WNU (and to some other web sites that I have an interest in). During this time I also talked and shared notes with others who have succeeded in generating significant traffic to their site .... and I always asked the same question .... how did they do it. Their answers have all been the same .... patience, hard work, luck, unique content, a search engine friendly site, and a little advertising. But with the exception of Instapundit .... no one has come close to achieving the results that Facebook is claiming that these Russian sites received in two years. I know in the case of WNU .... this site has been online for 10 years, and during this time I have done 86,701 posts. (this post will be 86,702). In terms of traffic .... according to Google .... there has been 78 million page views (which I estimate came from about 50,000,000 real visitors). In the beginning I had maybe 2 or 3 page views a day .... today I will probably hit 30,000 .... and that is the recipe for growing a website. But as for these Russian posts on Facebook .... I have seen some of these posts .... and they are junk. But this junk resulted in 126,000,000 Americans seeing it!?!?!?! And without the benefit of Google and other search engines?!?!?! As I said .... I am scratching my head. The numbers simply do not make sense. In closing .... sorry for going into the weeds on what is involved when it comes to web traffic. But if someone has a better explanation on how Facebook got this number as well as explaining to me how did these Russian operatives accomplished this .... I am all ears.

The Army is fast-tracking acquisition of more than 1,000 upgraded, lightweight shoulder-fired weapons able to destroy enemy targets hidden behind rocks, trees and buildings, service officials said.
The weapon is an upgraded variant of the Army’s Multi-Role Anti-Armor, Anti-Personnel Weapons System, or MAAWS - a reusable, recoilless shoulder-fired conventional munition.
It first ordered by the Army in response to an Operational Needs Statement from Afghanistan seeking to procure a direct fire, man-portable, anti-personnel and light structure weapon able, among other things, to respond to insurgent rocket-propelled grenade, or RPG, fire.
TEHRAN, Iran — The White House on Monday denied the Iranian government's claim that President Donald Trump asked to meet with his counterpart from the Islamic republic last month but was turned down.
According to Iran's semi-official Fars news agency, Trump requested a meeting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani after giving a speech to the United Nations condemning Iran as a "murderous regime" focused on the "pursuit of death and destruction."
Bahram Ghassemi, a spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, told a press conference Sunday that the report carried by Fars earlier in the day was correct.
"Indeed a request was made by the American side but it was not accepted by President Rouhani," Ghassemi said.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told NBC News in a brief email early Monday that this statement was "false."
WNU Editor: The Iranian claim is here .... President Rouhani turned down meeting with Trump (Tehran Times). More here .... Iran Says Rohani Turned Down Meeting With Trump (RFE). I am skeptical of the Iranian claim. These type of high-level meetings are always planned months in advance .... and in the case of a conflict between two countries (which in this case there is a conflict between the U.S. and Iran) .... it will be coordinated through a third party. So why the Iranian claim .... either it was a misunderstanding lost in translation, or someone in Iran wanted to make a point to a domestic audience.
Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl unexpectedly took the stand at his sentencing hearing Monday -- and choked up several times as he apologized to service members who were wounded in the years-long hunt to save him.
"I would like everyone who searched for me to know it was never my intention for anyone to be hurt, and I never expected that to happen," he said during the hearing at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. "My words alone can't take away their pain."
He was the first witness for the defense, who hadn't previously made it known that Bergdahl would address the court. It was his most extensive remarks in court yet.
WNU Editor: One thing that I have learned abut the military while doing this blog is that there are always consequences for one's actions .... both good and bad. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's actions on the night day that he deserted set into motion a number of actions that some families must now live with for the rest of their lives. There are consequences for this .... and while Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is probably sincere in his apology .... it is too little and way too late.
Secession from Spain would be unwise for many reasons. But in this age of hectic change, the search for identity cannot simply be dismissed
It’s remarkable what you can learn in Slovenia. At a conference on politics, security and development in Bled earlier this year, I was lucky enough to chat to the Catalan delegates, proudly representing the interests and wisdom of their ancient principality. With considerable poise and dignity, they seemed to me to be channelling Pericles on the Athenians: we do not imitate, but are a model to others.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal investigators probing Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election charged President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort and another aide, Rick Gates, with money laundering on Monday.
A third former Trump adviser, George Papadopoulos, pleaded guilty in early October to lying to the FBI, it was announced on Monday.
It was a sharp escalation of U.S. Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s five-month-old investigation into alleged Russian efforts to tilt the election in Trump’s favor, and into potential collusion by Trump aides.
Manafort, 68, a longtime Republican operative, and Gates were arraigned at a federal courthouse in Washington.
An armed man waves his rifle as buildings and cars are engulfed in flames after being set on fire inside the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, late on Sept. 11, 2012. Politifact
Special operations forces have captured a top militant who helped lead the deadly 2012 attacks against a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, The Associated Press reported Monday.
U.S. commandos captured the man in Libya during a joint mission that was approved by both President Trump and the Libyan government, U.S. officials told the news wire on condition of anonymity.
The man, who has yet to be identified, is seen as a key player in the assault that resulted in the deaths of a U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.
The militant is being transported to the United States, according to the report.
