One victim in Kandahar incident recently cited for bravery cheated death in previous tour

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - One of three Canadian soldiers killed by insurgents in Kandahar province Wednesday received a bravery citation a few days ago and narrowly escaped death during his previous tour in Afghanistan last year.

Corporals Andrew (Drew) Grenon, 23, and Mike Seggie, 21, and Pte. Chad Horn, 21, infantrymen with the 2 Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from CFB Shilo, Man., were killed when their vehicle came under attack in the volatile Zhari District, bringing the country's military death toll in Afghanistan to 96 since 2002.

The Taliban have taken responsibility for the attack.Grenon, who was called Drew or "G," by his fellow soldiers, joined the military more than four years ago and was on his second tour in Afghanistan.

He died just days after receiving a Canadian Expeditionary Forces Commander's Commendation for bravery during a violence that occurred earlier on his current tour, which began March 3.

"Andrew's actions prevented the outbreak of a riot and saved the lives of two soldiers," reads the award's inscription.
