Pakistan Chieftain Hunts Down Taliban -- The Telegraph

A Pakistani tribal chief is leading thousands of armed men to hunt down Taliban fighters.

Anwar Kamal has formed a lashkar, or tribal militia, that varies in strength from 2,000 to 10,000 to fight Taliban militants trespassing on his 200 square miles of mountain-bound territory.

His armed tribesmen help him by hunting down Taliban "overspill" from the neighbouring badlands of Waziristan.

His movement is at the vanguard of several tribes on the Pakistani-Afghan border that have formed militias to keep the Taliban - and hence Western-backed military operations against them - out of their areas.

Last month Mr Anwar travelled to meet militants in Waziristan, a stronghold of Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters who fled the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

"I told the Taliban in traditional language, the next time I see a Talib on my land I am going to screw him as hard as I can," said Mr Anwar, a fierce, bullish man whose readiness to go war is signalled by the way he has trimmed his moustache into two long, narrow whiskers. According to Pakistani tribal tradition, it makes the wearer look more aggressive.

My Comment: I am skeptical that this will work. The Sunni Awakening Councils in Iraq had the support of the American Military, in Pakistan, these men are not only going against the Taliban, but also their supporters in the Pakistani Army and Intelligence Services.
