Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Sentenced To Three Years In Jail

BBC News: Imran Khan: Pakistan ex-PM given three-year jail sentence

Ex-Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for nationwide protests after he was handed a three-year jail sentence over corruption allegations.

Mr Khan was found guilty of not declaring money earned from selling gifts he received in office.

He denies the charges and says he will appeal.

After the verdict, Mr Khan was taken into custody from his home in Lahore. In a pre-recorded statement posted after the verdict, he urged supporters to fight against the ruling.

"I have only one appeal, don't sit at home silently," he said in a video address posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.

"I am struggling for you and the country and your children's future," he added.

The former cricketer-turned-politician, 70, was elected in 2018, but was ousted in a no-confidence vote last year after falling out with Pakistan's powerful military.

Pakistan's Supreme Court Rules Imran Khan's Arrest Was Illegal And That He Must Be Released Immediately

BBC: Imran Khan: Pakistan's Supreme Court rules arrest was illegal

Pakistan's Supreme Court has ruled that former prime minister Imran Khan's dramatic arrest on corruption charges this week was illegal. The court ordered Mr Khan's immediate release.

His lawyers had argued that his detention from court premises in Islamabad on Tuesday was unlawful.

At least 10 people have been killed and 2,000 arrested as violent protests have swept the country since he was held. Tuesday's arrest escalated growing tensions between him and the military.

The opposition leader, ousted in a confidence vote in April last year, was brought to court on the orders of Pakistan's top judge.

As Mr Khan arrived in court, media ran through the corridors to capture his first public appearance since he was arrested.

Pakistan Court Remands Ex-PM Imran Khan For Eight Days After A Violent Day Of Unrest

BBC: Imran Khan: Violence and mass arrests as former Pakistan PM charged with corruption

Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan has pleaded not guilty to corruption charges a day after his arrest sparked nationwide protests.

Eight people have died nationwide in the protests and about 1,000 have been arrested, police say.

The army is being deployed in some areas, and has issued a stern warning after crowds attacked its properties.

Mr Khan's arrest dramatically escalated tensions between Mr Khan and the military at a time of economic crisis.

Conviction would disqualify the former cricket star - prime minister from 2018 to 2022 - from standing for office, possibly for life. Elections are due later this year.

As Pakistan's Financial Crisis Worsens, It Is Now Facing Massive Unemployment And Food Shortages

First Post: With no cash left for imports, Pakistan staring at massive unemployment, food shortage

Top businessmen in Pakistan have warned the government that a failure to lift the ban on imports will leave millions jobless and have urged the cash-strapped administration to allow manufacturing materials stuck at the Karachi port into the country

Islamabad: Even as thousands of containers with essential items remain stranded at the Karachi port due the severe lack of foreign exchange reserves, Pakistan is staring at an even bigger unemployment crisis due to a lack of imports.

Top businessmen in Pakistan have warned the government that a failure to lift the ban on imports will leave millions jobless and have urged the cash-strapped administration to allow manufacturing materials stuck at the Karachi port into the country.

Pakistan, which is struggling with critically low dollar reserves, has imposed a ban on imports with only essential items such as food and medicines being exempt.

Pakistan - IMF Bailout Deal Negotiations Have Collapsed

BBC: Pakistan IMF: Crucial bailout deal eludes negotiators

Eleventh-hour negotiations between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have failed to unlock $1.1bn in crucial funds aimed at preventing the country from going bankrupt.

A deepening economic crisis has all but emptied Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves, leaving it barely enough dollars to cover a month of imports and it is struggling to service sky-high levels of foreign debt.

The IMF team, which leaves Islamabad on Friday, said "considerable progress" had been made after 10 days of talks.

"Virtual discussions will continue in the coming days," the head of the IMF mission Nathan Porter said in a statement.

Pakistan’s Economy Is On The Brink Of Collapse

CNBC: Blackouts, currency dives and corruption: Pakistan’s economy is on the brink of collapse

* International Monetary Fund officials are in Islamabad for make-or-break talks over unlocking a $7 billion bailout fund.

* IMF officials want to see Pakistan’s government implement fiscal reforms before releasing any of the funds.

* Pakistan only has enough foreign currency reserves to pay for roughly three weeks of imports.

Pakistan’s economy is on a cliff-edge.

The South Asian country this week suffered a horrific bombing attack on a mosque that took at least 100 lives. On Jan. 24, the country’s 230 million residents were hit with a nationwide blackout. At time of writing, the Pakistani rupee is at a record low against the dollar.

These are just the latest shocks amid months of crisis as endemic government corruption, depleted foreign reserves and crippling debt have sent Pakistan’s economy spiraling.

“What would you like to know? How a bag of flour, essential here as we eat roti or chapati on a daily basis, has more than doubled in price? How fuel prices nearly doubled in less than a year?” Mohammed Usman, a photographer living in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, told CNBC.

Pakistan Hit By Nationwide Power Outage

Reuters: Pakistan scrambles to restore power after second major grid breakdown in months

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s national grid suffered a major breakdown on Monday, the power ministry said, leaving millions of people without electricity for the second time in three months and highlighting the infrastructural weakness of this heavily indebted nation.

Power Minister Khurrum Dastagir told Reuters the outage was caused by a large voltage surge in the south of the grid, which affected the entire network.

Supplies were being partially restored from north to the south, he added, nearly six hours after factories, hospitals and schools reported outages.

The grid should be fully functioning by 10 pm time (1700 GMT), Dastagir said, adding: “We are trying our utmost to achieve restoration before that.”

Sherry Rehman, the country’s climate change minister, insists rich polluters must pay their due as country is hit by devastating floods

Rich polluting countries which are predominantly to blame for the “dystopian” climate breakdown have broken their promises to reduce emissions and help developing countries adapt to global heating, according to Pakistan’s minister for climate change, who said reparations were long overdue.

Close to 1,300 people are dead and a third of Pakistan is under floodwater after weeks of unprecedented monsoon rains battered the country – which only weeks earlier had been suffering serious drought.

Dr. Subhash Kapila, Eurasian Review: Pakistan On Brink Of Civil War As Ousted PM Khan Weaponizes ‘Street Power’ – OpEd

Pakistan today in May 2022 tethers on the brink of a Civil War being generated by Constitutionally ousted former PM Iman Khan whose megalomaniacal impulses prompt him to challenge both the Constitution of Pakistan and the Pakistan Army by weaponizing “Street Power” in a bid to return to power in Islamabad – and raising grave implications for Pakistan and South Asia.

Pakistan today is witnessing a clash of narratives wherein saner voices within Pakistan are voicing alarm on the irreparable damage that can be inflicted by ousted PM Imran Khan with his ‘Disruptive Strategy’ of weaponising ‘street power’ and Pakistan’s politically immature younger generation mesmerised by Imran Khan’s flamboyance providing the huge turnouts at Imran Khan’s ‘Jalsas’ and now the Long March already in Islamabad precincts.
