Fighting Halts UN Food Convoy In Sri Lanka -- International Herald Tribune

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: A large United Nations convoy carrying food for thousands of people caught in the civil war between Sri Lanka's government and Tamil Tiger rebels was forced to turn back Thursday because of the fighting, the U.N. said.

The U.N. said it would try to deliver the food again on Friday if it receives renewed security assurances from the two sides.

Sri Lankan military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara accused the rebels of firing on the convoy.

He said 50 U.N. World Food Program trucks left for Tamil Tiger-controlled areas Thursday morning but were turned back by artillery fire. He said there were no casualties.

There was no immediate comment from the rebels.
