Security On Agenda Of Obama Meeting With Mexican Leader

(CNN) -- President-elect Barack Obama will meet Monday afternoon with Mexican President Felipe Calderon in the first face-to-face talks of the incoming U.S. leader with a foreign head of state.

The 12:30 p.m. ET meeting at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington will fulfill a tradition since 1980 of U.S. presidents talking with their Mexican counterparts before being sworn in to underscore the special relationship between the two nations. Obama takes the oath of office on January 20.

Calderon is expected to speak with Obama about a wide range of issues affecting both countries, most notably security, the economy and immigration. Calderon talked about these issues for three hours Sunday night during a private dinner with nongovernmental U.S. specialists and experts on Mexico.

Security is a prime concern, said Peter Hakim, president of the Inter-American Dialogue, who attended Sunday night's dinner.
