Somali Officials Squabble Over How To Select Next President

NAIROBI: The window of opportunity that was created by the recent resignation of the widely reviled president of Somalia seems to be closing quickly, with Somali politicians bickering over how to replace him and violence now raging on several different fronts.

On Monday, the speaker of the transitional Parliament declared that he was pushing ahead with plans to select a new president, despite vociferous objections by moderate Islamist leaders.

The Islamists have been promised seats in the Parliament and key government posts in a power-sharing agreement that could lessen some of the violence in Somalia, which has been mired in chaos and bloodshed for the past 18 years.
