The US President gave the former CIA Middle East expert Bruce Riedel the task of overhauling US policy in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and his working group has concluded that stabilising Pakistan is now the higher priority, a source familiar with the discussions has revealed.
The report, prepared in conjunction with the National Security Council (NSC), comes as internal turmoil in Pakistan and the steady encroachment of the Taliban and other extremist Islamic groups threatens the survival of the country.

My Comment: It is hard to assist Pakistan when the country itself is on the verge of disintegration. even founding viable partners in the political and military establishment is next to impossible. The leadership says one thing .... but the opposite happens on the ground.
So .... the Telegraph's assertion that we must help Pakistan to defeat Islamic extremism is right .... but the components within Pakistan that will make such an operation successful are not there.
