UN Raises Alarm In Sri Lanka As Final Assault Nears -- AFP

COLOMBO (AFP) — The United Nations on Tuesday warned that 100,000 civilians in Sri Lanka's war zone were at risk as government troops prepared for a final showdown with cornered Tamil rebels.

A top UN official expressed "deep concern" for the safety of ethnic Tamil non-combatants trapped in the conflict area and asked security forces to "scrupulously respect" a government-designated no-fire zone.
