When Somali pirates hijacked a Chinese fishing boat in the Indian Ocean last November, there was little that China could do. The government said it was assessing the situation and hoping for help from authorities in the region. Last week when pirates overpowered the crew of a Chinese bulk carrier 700 miles off the coast of Somalia, a Foreign Ministry spokesman pledged that China would make "an all-out effort to rescue the sailors and the ship."

My Comment: In one year, what was not possible for China is now possible (to a certain point). This is a surprisingly good and informative article from Time .... but the Chinese are very secretive in what they can do and what are their intentions and so the Time Magazine article should be read with this context.
From my point of view, the day that China starts to use their military might against adversaries that are far away from China itself ..... this will not only be a historical first, but it will also be a clear sign that the Chinese have decided to be assertive in protecting their interests on a global scale. My prediction .... I give them 5 years, and it will be to protect their oil interests in the Middle East.
