US Intelligence Says Chinese Shipbuilding Capacity Is Now 232 Times Greater Than The US

USN Warzone/The Drive: Alarming Navy Intel Slide Warns Of China’s 200 Times Greater Shipbuilding Capacity

The Office of Naval Intelligence is sounding the alarm about the huge gap in U.S. and Chinese shipbuilding capacity and its implications.

A U.S. Navy briefing slide is calling new attention to the worrisome disparity between Chinese and U.S. capacity to build new naval vessels and total naval force sizes. The data compiled by the Office of Naval Intelligence says that a growing gap in fleet sizes is being helped by China's shipbuilders being more than 200 times more capable of producing surface warships and submarines. This underscores longstanding concerns about the U.S. Navy's ability to challenge Chinese fleets, as well as sustain its forces afloat, in any future high-end conflict.

In a statement to The War Zone, the U.S. Navy has confirmed the authenticity of the slide, seen in full below, which has been circulating online.

The above report confirms what I fear. If a war should break out between the US and China and it lasts for a period of time, the U.S. will be forced to use their nuclear arsenals to offset the conventional military advantages that favor China.

China Reveals Its Conceptual Blueprint For A Futuristic Warship

SCMP: China’s top naval scientist proposes a Star Wars-style ‘supership’ to convert nuclear energy to kinetic force weapons

* Breakthroughs in electromagnetic launch technology pave the way for a nuclear-powered warship to carry rail gun, laser and high-powered microwave: Ma Weiming

* Researchers do not say when the supership will be built, but say China is ready to take the idea from science fiction to the real world

Rear Admiral Ma Weiming, who is key to the development of China's most advanced naval technologies, has revealed the conceptual blueprint of a futuristic warship which he says is unlike any ship the world had seen.

"It will completely overturn the combat formation of naval fleets that has been in place for over a hundred years," he said in a peer-reviewed paper published in Transactions of China Electrotechnical Society journal on June 13.

Currently, naval combat platforms around the world, aircraft carrier groups, have been made more complicated by the diversity of tasks they must perform. This makes it harder for them to coordinate their actions effectively. These vessels are also expensive to build and operate.

The Hainan, the first Type 075 amphibious assault ship of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, recently joined a flotilla and conducted a far sea exercise in the West Pacific, marking the first time that China has held an expeditionary voyage with a warship of this type.

Such drills displayed the vessel's high level of combat readiness and the PLA Navy's amphibious landing capabilities in carrying out traditional security missions as well as non-traditional ones like anti-terrorism and humanitarian aid, analysts said on Thursday.

The far sea joint training flotilla under the PLA Southern Theater Command Navy recently returned to base after successfully carrying out a combat training mission in the South China Sea and the West Pacific over 30 days and across more than 9,000 nautical miles, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Thursday.

U.S. Navy Secretary Says China's Naval Fleet Is Growing And The US 'Can't Keep Up' With Warship Production

Daily Mail: China's naval fleet is growing and the US 'can't keep up' with the warship buildup as Beijing uses its sea power to project an 'increasingly aggressive military posture globally,' Navy Secretary warns

* US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro voiced concern in remarks on Wednesday

* Said China has 340 active warships, compared to about 280 for the US Navy

* Claimed US naval shipyards can't match the output of Chinese ones

The US Secretary of the Navy has raised the alarm that China's naval fleet surpasses America's in number of ships, and is growing faster than the US has current capacity to match.

'It is no secret that the People's Republic of China seeks to upend our dominance on the oceans across the globe,' said Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro in remarks at the National Press Club in Washington DC on Wednesday.

Del Toro said that China's navy has recently added over one hundred combatants to its fleet, calling it 'a naval buildup that is a key component of its increasingly aggressive military posture globally.'

U.S. Military Leaders Are Worried About China's Naval Buildup And Its Shipyard Capacity

National Defense: ANALYSIS: Shipyard Capacity, China’s Naval Buildup Worries U.S. Military Leaders

While U.S. military leaders exchange fire over what the next-generation of naval fleets will look like, the shipbuilding industrial base is treading water.

Since 2016, the Navy has been working toward a 355-ship fleet goal as outlined in its long-term force structure plan.

But Navy ambitions have been complicated by the Marine Corps’ modernization strategy, prompting back-and-forth between service leadership and lawmakers regarding future fleet size and structure.

In addition, China’s more aggressive moves in the Indo-Pacific — especially considering Taiwan — is elevating the need for greater shipbuilding and maintenance capacity to meet demand, naval power experts said.

Retired Adm. Phil Davidson, former commander of Indo-Pacific Command, predicted in 2021 that the following six years would see China’s threat to naval forces reach its height.

China's Large Warships Lack A Modern Medium-Range Ship-To-Air Missile System

Defense One: China’s Big New Warship Is Missing an Important New Weapon

When will we finally see the HQ-26 missile?

Last Christmas, the PLA Navy received a long-awaited gift when its seventh and eighth Type 055 destroyers entered service, completing delivery of its first batch of its lethal new class of warship. At roughly 13,000 tons, the Type 055s are Asia's biggest surface warships since World War II; the U.S. Navy classifies them as cruisers. However, despite impressive armaments, advanced radar systems, and other impressive capabilities, initial reporting indicates that the Type 055s appear to be missing a key weapon: the long-planned next-generation ship-to-air missile.

Ten years ago, rumors began to circulate of Chinese plans for a greatly improved version of its Russian-derived HQ-16 medium-range ship-to-air missile system. The HQ-16 was based on the Russian 9K37 Buk, whose development Moscow began back in 1972. China’s current upgraded HQ-16B dates from 2011 and has a reported maximum range of 70 km. The anticipated HQ-26 was said to be roughly equivalent to the U.S. SM-3 missile used by the Aegis ballistic missile defense system. Reportedly, it would be able to destroy short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and manned and unmanned aircraft out to 400 kilometers.

This new HQ-26 interceptor seemed tailor-made for the Type 055, which is intended for use as a missile-defense ship. Yet when the lead ship of the class, the Nanchang, was commissioned in January 2020, we saw only the old HQ-16 system, accompanied by notable silence from China’s military enthusiasts. Almost three years later, some speculate the HQ-26 still remains a year or two from deployment.

SCMP: South China Sea: PLA strike group holds live-fire drills after US warships enter region

* Flotilla led by Chinese-made Shandong aircraft carrier performs 'confrontational exercises' as US Navy carries out training and anti-submarine activities

* Defence experts say Beijing forced to be vigilant as Lunar New Year approaches because military tensions tend to escalate during festival periods

A Chinese aircraft carrier strike group has conducted intensive live-fire drills in the South China Sea since the US Navy sent its USS Nimitz strike group to the area last week.

The flotilla is led by the Shandong, China's first domestically built aircraft carrier, and includes a Type 055 stealth guided-missile destroyer and three guided-missile destroyers.

The strike group began a series of confrontational drills in the South China Sea last week, the PLA Navy said on its WeChat account on Sunday.

Images Emerge On Chinese Social Media Of A Barge Covered In Various Radar Reflectors And Antennas Protected By A Defense System That Is Found On Warships

Warzone/The Drive: Chinese Countermeasure Barge Covered In Radar Reflectors Emerges

The barge, which is festooned with radar reflectors, antennas, defensive launchers, and other gear, first appeared in model form a year ago.

Pictures recently emerged on social media of an interesting Chinese barge covered in various radar reflectors and antennas, and also equipped with a pair of Type 726-series defensive launchers that are used on various People's Liberation Army Navy warships. By all indications, the barge's main purpose is to support countermeasure and electronic warfare and related test and training activities, which could also support the development of new and improved weapons, sensors, and countermeasures. In some ways, it looks similar to decoy target barges that were used by Russia in efforts to protect the Kerch Strait Bridge in Crimea earlier this year.

China often holds military exercises at short notice in response to U.S. naval activities in disputed seas.

China has staged another military exercise off the back of a five-day large-scale drill near the Paracel islands–just as the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan docked in Singapore after spending over a week in the South China Sea.

The U.S. carrier and its strike group were slated to visit Vietnam this month but the visit has been called off, said two Vietnamese sources with knowledge of the matter who wish to stay anonymous because they’re not authorised to speak to the media.

CNN: Never mind China’s new aircraft carrier, these are the ships the US should worry about

China made a big statement about its naval ambitions with the recent launch of its third and most advanced aircraft carrier.

The Fujian – by far China’s biggest, most modern and most powerful aircraft carrier to date – is the 80,000-ton jewel in the crown of a military expansion that has seen Beijing grow its navy into the world’s largest.

Its new combat systems – such as an electromagnetic catapult-assisted launch system – show China is fast catching up with the United States, experts say, and will give it the ability to launch more aircraft, more quickly, and with more ammunition.
