Taleban Militants Put Up Stern Resistance In South Waziristan Offensive -- Times Online

Fierce fighting raged in northwest Pakistan today, 24 hours after the Army launched its highly-anticipated ground offensive against Taleban and al Qaeda strongholds in South Waziristan.

Around 30,000 army troops backed by fighter jets and helicopter gunships reported encountering tough resistance from the militants, raising the ominous prospect of a long war in the treacherous mountainous territory as winter approaches.
