Don't Bet on a Regime Change in Iran -- Con Coughlin
Only international pressure can stop the Iranian nuclear program.
With Iran's political turmoil showing no signs of abating, many Western policy makers believe the pressure is easing on them to stop the country's nuclear ambitions.
They argue that Iran's pro-reform Green Movement is a formidable challenge to the ruling hard-line conservatives. The protesters' valiant attempt to make their presence felt during yesterday's celebrations of the 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution is considered as further evidence that domestic pressure will change the regime's behavior if not the regime itself.
Unfortunately, the green protesters are no match for the mullahs' security infrastructure, personified by the Revolutionary Guard and the Basij militia. Rumors about the regime's death are very premature.
