SANTIAGO—Chile's massive earthquake has thrust the country's powerful army back into the national spotlight after nearly two decades of keeping a low profile.
Army troops virtually occupy Chile's second-largest city, ConcepciĆ³n, having declared curfew to clamp down on looting that followed Saturday's deadly quake. Troops also patrol a 400-mile-wide area in south-central Chile, keeping the peace as government aid flows to coastal towns that were hit hardest by the weekend's 8.8-magnitude quake and the tsunami that followed.
